Inexpensive travel ideas in New Zealand and Australia?

outtahere

We are going to Australia and New Zealand (south island) for 10 days in each place in December. Do you have any ideas of how a family of four can get around and stay cheaply? Train? Rental car? Ideas of Must see places?
Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Answer
Hi

I am a New Zealander and can only address that part of your question as I do not know enough about Australia to help you. Also, I am interpreting your question to mean that you will be in New Zealand for 10 days and will only be visiting the South Island.
Presumably you will be flying into and out of Christchurch.

Unfortunately, December is in the peak holiday season and so very little will be cheap. In general, public transport is not an efficient way of travelling around New Zealand if you have a limited amount of time.

You don't say what ages the members of your family are. Your means of travelling and what types of accommodation are suitable are driven by their ages and how adventurous you want to be. Also, remember that the South Island is predominantly a scenic experience and is sparsely populated. I have no doubt that you, as adults, will be in constant awe at its beauty and inspiring landscape. However, I have young children and, in my experience, the 'countryside' doesn't always cut it. However, I think you will find that the centres I have listed below will have enough mini-golf, luge, shops, etc etc facilities to keep them happy in between bouts of boring vistas!!! :-). Ideally, your children will be lovers of open spaces and if so you will all have a blast.

As regards transport you can hire a campervan and campsites are plentiful, safe and of good quality. Alternatively, you can hire a car and stay in youth hostels or at those same campsites in low cost cabins if you are prepared to forego some of the 'luxuries' such as ensuite and kitchen facilities (i.e. are happy to sleep within four walls that contain just beds and use communal facilities). If hiring transport is too costly, then there are a number of private coach companies that run scheduled bus services around the South Island. You buy an all inclusive ticket and get on and get off wherenever and wherever you choose. However, the cost for four of these tickets may well be more than the cost of hiring transport.

As regards where to go:

Starting in Christchurch - after spending a short time taking a look around you should make your way over to the West Coast. There is an excellent train journey which goes from Christchurch to Greymouth called the 'Tranz Alpine'. Its a great scenic journey and a restful way to see this region. However you can drive almost the same route if you choose to hire transport. Once on the West Coast, travel a little way north to see the 'Pancake Rocks'; turn back southwards and visit the 'Glaciers'. Continue south through the 'Haast Pass' to 'Wanaka' and 'Queenstown'. From there go to 'Milford Sound'. From there across to 'Dunedin' and back up the coast to 'Christchurch' and 'Akaroa'. If you still have time to spare then you can go north from Christchurch to visit Kaikoura for a spot of whale watching before returning to leave from Christchurch. I really think that, unless you enjoy speed touring, all of that will take up your ten days. I live in Nelson and I would love to suggest you come here. It is a beautiful region and has excellent national parks, craft centres, wineries etc etc; however, if you are starting and leaving from Chrictchurch, it may just be too far north for you to include comfortably. For the same reason, I don't see the North Island as a possibility even though the Rotorua area would normally be included in my 'must see' list for New Zealand.

I haven't described iin detail the places I have listed, but you should be able to read about them if you look at the New Zealand dot com and/or AA sites that I have included in the example sites listed below. These sites will get you started and google/yahoo searches will yield many more worthwhile information sites about New Zealand.

What's it like to live in New Zealand?

MUSASHI

I'm thinking about taking a vacation there. Is it expensive or cheaper compared to that of the US. I even hear some friends talking about moving there to work and live. Can anyone share some insight, please?

Answer
If you can get a cheapish airfare, you will find it a relatively cheap place to holiday as the US dollar is relatively strong. There are a wide range of options in terms of getting around (bus, rental car, camper van, guided tours etc.) and accommodation - really high end luxury hotels and camping grounds with cabins and shared kitchens so you can do your own cooking - and everything in between.
In terms of living here - I moved here from the US 12 years ago, and go home regularly. Rent and house prices are probably lower, cars and gas are more expensive. Food probably is about the same (some higher, some lower) Health care and education (tertiary) are cheaper. Clothes and shoes are more. Appliances, electronics and furniture are more. Unless you are going to the islands or Australia, it costs a lot to get anywhere.
In terms of moving here to work and live -
If you've got 10 million dollars to invest, you'll be welcomed with open arms. Otherwise, you'll need to meet the requirements in terms of education and skills, money to resettle and language etc.
It is wonderful lifestyle and a great place to raise a family. I have no desire to move back to the US.
You should definitely come for a holiday - have at least 3 weeks, pick one island (I'd say the South Island for sure) and rent a car so you have flexibility.

basic types of cars..?

hheyyyy

i'm getting interested in cars.
but, i wanna be able to see a car and no what it is.
like not soo specific, but when a car drives by i wanna be able to say
"oh that's a mustang" or "oh that's a p.t cruiser" & so on..
those are the basic kind of cars i know.
thanks!

Answer
i'm not positive what your question is, but i'll try. those are not the basic "types" of cars, more the models. first of all, let's get the types (referring to body types) straight:
trucks (full size, midsize, pickups)
vans (usually on a truck or truck like chassis or used to be, very identifiable with sliding doors)
sedans (4 door cars)
coupes (2 door cars)
convertibles (anything with a top that goes down, hard top or soft top)
suv's (truck chassis, enclosed with a another row of seats usually)
crossover's (looks like an suv, but has a car chassis)

that's in a nutshell, and there are lots of variations of these and maybe some i missed.

then comes other terms like:
roadsters (2 door, usually kinda quick and fun, usually convertible)
sports car (anything that is relatively fast and usually needs to be 2 door)
muscle car (a type of sports car that is American built, sometimes heavy but always lots of horsepower)
ricer (japanese built, slightly derogatory, comes from term "rice burner," usually cheaply built and owner modified, identifiable by large spoilers and "fart cannons"-loud mufflers that are tingy- hanging out the back of them)
super car (usually european built, but the corvette zr1 falls into this, ridiculously fast, very expensive, exotic looking)

that's just kinda the tip of the iceburg, but it'll give you an idea.

now, to what you were referring to, the make and model. the make refers to manufacturer, the model refers to the specific car, here are some of the big ones and a COUPLE of the most popular cars in each:
detroit big 3 (american made)
GM [buick, cadillac, saturn, hummer, gmc, saab, pontiac] (camaro, silverado, malibu, corvette, xlr, g8 etc) [GM has a lot of branches]
Chrysler/Dodge (challenger, ram, charger, viper, etc)
Ford (mustang, F-150, focus, fusion, etc)
major japanese made
Honda (accord, civic, pilot etc) [acura is the luxury brand]
Toyota (camry, tacoma, etc) [lexus is the luxury brand]
Nissan (370z, pathfinder, altima etc) [infinity is the luxury brand]
Hyundai (genesis, tiburon, etc)
Subaru (impreza, outback, etc)
major european made
BMW (z4, 135i, x8, etc)
Mercedes Benz (e-class, slk-class, etc)
Audi (r8, tt, etc)
Volkswagen (rabbit, jetta, gti)

Now again, this is only scratching the surface. If you really want to be able to identify everything that goes down the road, read lots of car magazines and pay attention to the car commercials. The best magazines are Car&Driver, Motortrend, and the like. Hope this helped!

Need a vehicle that 3 car seats can fit in the backseat.?

EJ

I need a vehicle that will fit three carseats in the back. I have an infant, front facing (19mo old 29 lbs) and a front facing 5yr old in a booster.

I am not wanting a car as we live in an area that the roads are horrible in the winter. So we are looking for something that is an SUV. I know I can fit all three in a van, but we wanted to see about an SUV. Our credit isn't the best right now but all we have is a two door blazer that only has two seats in the back and then the front seats. So our family can't even fit into the car we have.

So the vehicle needs to be a reasonable price (not an Armada or Suburban or anything).
Thanks In advance.
For those of you assuming I don't want a van because it is "un cool" and saying I don't "need" an SUV you are wrong. I live in Wyoming and live 30 miles from town in the country where my 4 mile drive way is dirt... I need an SUV and 4WD in order to get down my drive way in bad weather. We got 12 inches of snow a few weeks back when town got 4. A van is not going to cut it... Sorry to burst your bubble. And not to mention why the hell comment being rude and spiteful... Why not say nothing at all.

Answer
Hey! I hear ya. I have three kiddos, ages 6, 3, and 19 months. :) We had a minivan and hated every minute of it and traded it off after 1 year with it. We have a Mercury Mountaineer. We. Love. It. It works really well. It has third row fold down seating (which is really comfortable and roomy - I can sit in the 3rd row very comfortably and I'm 26 years old and 5'3). My youngest daughter is in a full carseat still and my middle daughter is in a booster and they both sit on the middle row (with enough room between them where an adult could sit) while my oldest daughter sits in back in the 3rd row. The 3rd row seating is easily accesible via part of the middle row folding down where she can very easily get back there, or through the lift gate. The 3rd row has a push button power fold up-fold down mechanism where the entire row can be folded up or just one section can be up or they can all be folded down for hauling stuff. Size wise, it is shorter than the minivan and hauls the same amount of stuff in the back. It drives and handles SO well. The gas mileage isn't bad at all - about 25 mpg on the highway which is 2 to 3 mpg less than the minivan. You can also get them very reasonably priced...we purchased ours used with low miles (it's an '06) for $13K. Nothing wrong with it, and in mint condition, their "luxury" edition. The 4 wheel drive works great. :) That's just my two cents worth...

Edit: someone else said that minivans drive better than SUV's in the winter....no...nononononononono.... we had a minivan through an upper Midwest winter (snow cover pretty much October through March) and the minivan was HORIBLE...the devil even...lol. I spent HOURS stuck in the snow and ice on FLAT ROAD surfaces in town... it steered horribly and had no traction...the minivan made front wheel drive CARS I've had look like 4x4's as far as drivability in the winter was concerned. We have not had any trouble with our SUV in the winter - it gets around SO WELL. Never been stuck once. I would never, never go back to a minivan...you couldn't pay me enough to drive one again, let alone in winter time... (shudder shudder, cringe cringe) ;)

PS - the Volvo XC90s are great - they also have the AWD and 3rd row seating feature, however, make sure you live close to a volvo dealer if you need repairs... we considered that and were pretty much decided on the XC90 but the closest dealer was 130 miles away and the repair shops around where we live won't touch 'em... much to my intense chagrin... but yeah Volvos are great too!!!!! And you can get a used one for under $20K...

PSS - Jeep Grand Cherokee warning: I loved my jeep...but...3 carseats did not fit in the back... that's why we got the minivan... Even if you can cram the carseats in there...you'll never be able to get the boosters buckled without removing a carseat and then putting it back in... Not saying it can't be done, just saying you don't want to do that...and the jeep gets the same mileage as the mountaineer and less than the XC90 and both of those have the seating you need and they are also 4 wheel drive...don't do the JGC thing at this point in your life...just sayn' :)

In regards to your edit to the haters: I was literally grinning from ear to ear when I heard that...lol...some people are so freaking rude...and foolish to even say stuff like that... but like Mark Twain said, "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." some people just can't seem to pick up on that, can they? lol ;) Ignore the dorks, do your own thing and love every minute of it :D ;)

Has anyone ever used an auto broker to buy a car?

Lion_HRT

How do you choose an auto broker in Houston, Texas?

Answer
Brokers are simply independent sales people who are not connected to a particular dealership. They have access to all makes of cars. If you use a broker and you want to buy a BMW for instance he will find the one you want, then buy it from the dealer for wholesale value. and then sell it to you for the retail price. they just do the leg work for you. and if you need financing they can arrange that. Our dealership would sell trade ins to the brokers if they were luxury high end cars that were not our make. we would sell him a BMW for instance because it would make our cars less appealing. (CHEV/OLDS) They are not more expensive or cheaper either. They start off at the same point as any dealer. and try to make as much as possible. Why not call a local dealership and ask if they can recommend any one, they know which ones are not crooks. Just remember he is simply a middle man. So the dealer makes money, the broker makes money.... how much is up to you.

Jamiroquai's video where he is racing in a sports car along with another BMW car. What's the name of that song?

Q.

Answer
Well there is one video where he had "jacked' a 2 door car but it was not a sports car and he then jacked a BMW that he caused to spin out. That video is " Black Capricorn Day". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVyPhonWpBc
The only one that really had him "racing" other cars was " Cosmic Girl" but there are no BMWs in that one. There are 2 McLarens and a Ferrari.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2mr2yY5F3c

Indy Car Racing Fans ?

LadyJayhaw

This is not ment to be offensive in any sense, but what's great about watching it, and how did you become an indy car racing fan ? Just trying to understand the sport.

Answer
I became an IndyCar fan back in 1993 after buying a video game for my computer. Once I had that, I was hooked. Admittedly, I followed CART/Champ Car more than the IRL simply because I liked the diversity of tracks that the former offered. However, I am ecstatic that the two series are now one and I am looking forward to many great seasons of racing in the new IRL IndyCar series.

What's great about watching it? Speed, strategy and skill. These cars go very fast, faster than a NASCAR Sprint Cup car, they require tremendous skill to drive-they are always on a knife edge-and the strategy of having to think and plan all conceivable angles makes it fun and exciting for me. I would suggest watching a race and finding out for yourself what we know. I can almost guarantee you will be hooked.

Luxury cars with low insurance rates?

Nathan Dra

I was wondering what types of luxury cars would have the lowest insurance rates? I would prefer either a sedan or coupe. So in the category of luxury sedan/coupe, what would be the lowest insurance rate? I don't care about the price of the car itself, I just want one that doesn't have me paying a bunch every month, non-stop.

My definition of low is around the neighborhood of $60, preferably lower obviously. If there is no such thing, then please tell me the closest to it. Thank you in advance.

Answer
The older the car - the cheaper the insurance
The less actual coverage you purchase - the cheaper insurance.

For a "luxury" car at $60 a month you are probably going to have to purchase a car from the mid-90s and purchase your state's minimum coverage = on top of that, hope you don't have any points on your driving record.

StephenW = based on your idea if I purchase a car that costs $50000 or $100,000 I will pay the same rate... SURE (NOT!!!)

if the guy's driving a $50000 car how much is he making a year?

nineteen t

Answer
A large portion of luxury cars are bought as a lease.
This could mean that he put nothing down and has very low payments.
Downside: In 2 years, he'll have nothing to his name
He'll either have to lease again, or do the right thing and buy a car.
Leasing a sure way to become poor fast.
Don't be jealous of anyone like that.

Is Porsche Boxter an OK first car?

Kyle

How safe / Reliable would one of these be with around 30k miles and years varying around 06-08? Also, would they handle decently in lighter snow with some snow tires on it? Also, I've worked hard for my money and my parents are helping me out a bit as well, and I've already had the insurance quoted and found that it could work. But is this at least a decent first car or should i look otherwise? Thanks!

Answer
The Boxster is a great sports car. Here is what Car and Driver had to say about the 2006 Boxster, which they named Best Luxury Sports Car - http://www.caranddriver.com/features/2006-10best-cars-2006-porsche-boxster-page-11 . The cars can be expensive to maintain, although most Porsches aren't as expensive as some people would have you believe, and the Boxster is the entry level Porsche. If you have investigated insurance, you may have already checked on the most expensive part of owning one ... for you.

First big caution: This car was never intended for snow. It may have a "mid engine" layout, but it is still rear weight biased, and that does not make for a good snow car. Also, with anything over about six inches of snow on the road, your Porsche becomes a snow plow. Low clearance is not a good snow characteristic.

Many Porsches see no more than 6,000 to 8,000 miles per year. A 2008 Boxster with only 30,000 miles on it shouldn't be hard to find.

Porsches are dependable; however, any ride can be ruined by neglect. If you do consider purchasing one, do everything you would do with any used car: check the Car Fax, but don't rely on it entirely. Drive the car paying attention to engine, transmission, steering, etc. sounds and characteristics. Examine the paper trail of required oil changes, maintenance, and any repairs. If the paper is all there, great. If there are holes, you'll have to decide how important those holes are. I recommend you walk away from any used car that has no records. Get the car looked at by a competent mechanic (not where you intend to buy) before entering price negotiations. Know the condition of tires, brakes, hoses, belts, battery, etc.

Here is your second big caution: This car has only two seats! Even though it has two "trunks," those are small and you really can't haul much in it either. Generally, new drivers want to haul their friends and their gear around. Consider that something with at least four seats and a trunk for your soccer (or whatever) gear will serve you better as a first car.

which sports car goes faster? corvette or porsche?

Q. i read some magazines about vettes. I'm a big dreamer of vettes i wish i could ever drove one of them...damn i can't stop dreaming..now for porsche i heard that a vette and a porsche were giving for a drive test and you know what vette lose.huhuhu someday in 2008 i hope the C6 Z06 could make those engines faster than C6

Answer
The Corvette has a slightly higher top speed.
The Porsche has quicker acceleration.
Both of there handling is great.
The Corvette uses 8 cylinders.
The Porsche uses 6 cylinders. 20HP less than Corvette

911 Turbo top speed is 193mph, 0-60 in 3.7 seconds.
ZO6 top speed is 198mph, 0-60 in 4.0 seconds.

The Porsche is the best All rounder. It has the best combination of speed, handling, comfort, practicality, space, and luxury.

911 Carrera S top speed is 183mph, 0-60 in 4.6 seconds.
Corvette top speed is 186mph, 0-60 in 4.6 seconds.

Karma believers-What karma have you witnessed and/or had yourself?

Q. I've been researching karma all night. It's interesting, but some people believe, some people don't. My question is , what karma have YOU had or what karma have YOU personally seen?

Answer
Karma = "imprint". Everything we do, say, think and feel sets one or another type of imprint within us. In turn, it is those imprints (karmas) that we have set inside ourselves that draw to us the people and situations of our life. Here is a story about karma:

In 1964, folk music was very popular. Everyone was singing the songs, often with other people so we could harmonize together. And you just HAD to have at least one guitar to do this.

I had no guitar. But my older sister had a cheap guitar that had a tinny sound and the metal strings left deep painful grooves in your fingertips after chording for a while. But ... it was a guitar!!!!! I borrowed it as much as I could (sis was living at home while she went to university).

Christmas came, and my sister had no money for gifts. Christmas morning she came out of her room with her guitar in her hand, a bow on it, and gives it to me. She had tears in her eyes, partly because I was so overjoyed and she was moved ... but also because she too loved her guitar and she couldn't afford to replace it. Her gift was a great act of unselfish caring and generosity.

Five months later, sis was walking down the sidewalk. She was walking by some guy packing up his MG sports car, when he called out to her. He said he had graduated and was moving across-country, 3000 miles away, and was only taking what would fit into his car ... he couldn't fit his guitar into his car ... would she like it? He was giving it away.
Of COURSE she accepted, and when she got home and opened up the guitar case, she saw that he had given her a Martin Classical guitar. With sweet, dulcet tones and soft nylon strings that never hurt your fingers, this guitar would cost over $4,000 in today's market.

Now ... about 8 years later I too had an occasion to perform an act of great generosity, taking a strong attachment to something I owned, and turning it into the joy of giving it away. Two weeks later, I got a gift of the same type of item, but of far greater value than what I had parted with.

Once is coincidence. Twice is ... karma.

Should US government take back $1/2 billion loan to German car maker for making cars in Finland?

Deep End o

Henrik Fisker promised to build an electric car in the USA and received a $500 million loan from the Energy Department (a.k.a. the U.S. tax payer). The Obama Administration heralded the loan as a boost to U.S. jobs. Now Fisker is building the cars in Finland.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/car-company-us-loan-builds-cars-finland/story?id=14770875

Answer
The loan was made in 2009, and is for the development of a family car, the Karma sports car being assembled in Finland has little to nothing to do with the loan.

And Fisker is an American company, not German, in fact, they have facilities in Michigan, where I live, so they at least create some jobs here, where they are sorely needed. They have also created jobs in Delaware, and more will be created when the loan is used to build the planned family sedan here in the US.

I would certainly be happier if they also decided to build all their cars here, and I intend to write them. They should indeed be embarrassed by this. My state badly needs these jobs.

But this behavior is hardly unprecedented. All American car companies build many their cars out of the country. Frankly, tax laws encourage this. Laws that need to be changed. This is where your anger should be directed. Of course American car companies build cars in foreign countries if it saves money.

If it's the loan that bothers you, it's a much bigger question than just electric cars. Why do we subsidize oil companies to the tune of billions of dollars every year? Most petroleum companies aren't even American companies.

Drag racing?

steves9500

Ever been to an NHRA event? What do you like about it? Any other league?

Answer
There's nothing like a drag race. NHRA is the top level in the sport (like NBA, NFL or MLB their respective sports). When the nitro-methane burning Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars fire up the smell is unmistakable. When they go full throttle every bone in your body will shake. Pro Stock is my favorite; they dump the clutch to launch and race down the 1/4 mile while shifting through 5 gears. Every ticket is also a Pit Pass so you can walk through the pits and see your favorite cars and drivers up close and personal; you might even walk away with used parts as souvenirs!

IHRA and the ADRL are some other leagues...ADRL is incredible 1/8 mile pro modified door car racing. They are the fastest door cars on the planet with a class for supercharged engines and a class for nitrous motors.

If you've never been to a drag race you should go as soon as you can; it's AWESOME!

Good 80's Sports Cars for Drag Racing?

2010 Kawas

I am looking for a good sports car from the 80's to fix up. I can't spend too much. I love the older designs. I am looking to make this car into fast and good looking car. Like the cars that you might see in Fast and Furious Movies (Not saying there are any old sport cars in the movie series, but I want to tune it up and design it to be fast and look great). And I want it to be a manual transmission. I will be using it for track AND street use.

Answer
1989 Nissan 240sx. You can literally put anything from a KA24e (single cam four cylinder) to a big beefy 6.2 Litre LS1 V8 (Camaro/Firebird/Corvette engine)

Is a 2006 chevrolet lacetti sport a good first car?

Pkufart

I am looking for a solid first car but i don´t really want to drive around in a crapcake 2000.

Answer
Appears to be a good choice for a first car. It was originally a Daewoo, that Chevrolet purchased the company and put their moniker on the car. It was rated well for value which is what a first car is about. The sport model has more power and features than the base. The hatchback allows good use in transport. Although not safety crash tested in Europe (This is a European car never sold in the the US, and under a different name in other regions), it does have ABS brakes and driver, passenger, and side air bags. Petrol efficiency is decent . As an economy car, you get the newer model years typically with less engine wear at a similar price to older cars. It appears to be well suited to be a first car. If you buy one, I hope you enjoy owning it.

2008 honda civc si or 2006 ford mustang v6?

Chris G

Im 17 and im looking for my first car and im looking for a sports car and ive been looking at alot of 2006-2008 honda si's and alot of 2006-2009 ford mustangs and im paying for it and my parents are paying insurance and everything is set were just looking for a car i will be buying within the next month and i want a car i can add mods to and just make it faster and nicer which car would be better to get?

Answer
Honestly for your first car you want something that if you accidentally hit something or someone hits you (especially since you are starting to get the hang of driving on your own) you'll want something that is practical yet still has a sporty-er look to it.

You'll preferably want a car that has a smaller engine (it's better on the gas and when you get your first job (or you have a job I don't know all the details here) it'll be easier to maintain on your own when you take the responsibility off of your parents) so that you get better gas milage (although smaller engine does not always equal better gas, that's usually the case)

Since both cars are presumably used (either that or you are really lucky) you'll want the one that is better taken care of, look at the little details such as how the car handles, how the brakes handle, how the engine sounds, and how the car shifts (clutch!) (if you are buying from a dealer most of this won't be an issue but you'll want to check anyways)

The Mustang is a beautiful car but it's not really practical unless you live in an area where there is almost no bad weather since they are rear wheel drive. While the Si isn't as practical as the regular civic, it's going to be a little bit better in the bad weather since it is a front wheel drive vehicle (front wheel drive is actually very good for your first car in my opinion).

You also wand to look at how many miles are on each vehicle and find out whether they are highway or city miles. When a car has more highway miles than higher city miles, it usually means that their life expectancy will be a little long.

The Si is newer than the Mustang as well, so the newer car might last you a little longer as well (again depending on the miles)

Also, the Si gets 21/29MPG while the Mustang only gets 15/23MPG, so there you go with the whole gas situation.

Again, while the Mustang may look a little better, a car is ultimately what you NEED and what you WANT. You don't have to settle for one or the other unless you are in a bad pinch. So again, the Si will be something you can definitely "add mods" to while still maintaining a reliable aspect.

And as racinngfan3 stated, the insurance rates are going to be hard to cover too. If you happen to take the car out of your parents' names before you are 25 your insurance will likely be extremely expensive. The Civic will definitely be lower than the mustang though. The other thing to is avoid the color red, that will actually make your prices raise as well (since red cars are the most stolen cars). However, if the Civic is red, it shouldn't be nearly as big of a deal or as bad as if the Mustang was.

I'm just saying make sure that when you choose your car you're responsible with it as well as one you can have some fun with. You want your car to be your freedom, not your trap.

Hope you find the perfect car and congrats on getting your first! It's always very exciting to pick it up and drive it off the lot (or out of the driveway if you are buying privately)!

Hope my answer was informative enough. If you want more details on the cars themselves you can check the links below!

P.S. I've seen kids die because they want to speed. They ended up crashing and it didn't end well (the actually went partially through your house). I am a car fan myself (albeit not a very enthused fan since it's a "newer" passion but I do love cars) so I know what it's like to want a nice car. However, as long as you are responsible and just want to take some pride in your car, there is nothing wrong with that. Just don't do anything stupid you know?

Moving to Las Vegas, need support?

calljs15

You guys, I'm moving to Las Vegas to work at the Hooters Casino. I'm a Hooter girl in the midwest and have worked at 3 different stores. I'm experienced but scared to move out to Las Vegas. I can't take my dog, my nice sports car (afraid it'll get vandalized or broken into) I don't know anyone out there. I'm thinking of moving in with a strange roomate but I'll be over 1000 miles away from family and friends but the money is so incredible.. it's just suppose to be over the summer. I've never been away from my family for over a week, I'm going to miss my dog and car and friends so much I'm just freakin out.
Some advice?
I did not know the casino had been bought. Does that mean it's going to close down?

Answer
Just really focus on a savings plan and let that motivate you to get you threw it. I live here and there are plenty of nice cars so dont know why u cant bring your nice car here. Do be careful about the roommate though. At least make sure you move with a girl just to be sure. The Summer isnt so long, just be safe and focused and it should be a good learning experience for you to grow.

Las Vegas. Staying for Day, and one day only.?

tmzkdl2268

Well, we are goinh to see the grand canyon this thanksgiving.
However, before going to the grand canyon, we are going to go to las vegas, for a day, and then go see the grand canyon.
We arrive at 11:00 AM at airport, and are going to rent a car. We will stay for a day ar TI hotel.
We will spend over $2000 for plane ticket, so we don't want to do something pricy.

I know we are going to see fountain show at Bellagios, pirate ship show (since we are staying at TI anyways), volcano for sure.
We might go to the casino (caesar's maybe?) but are not going to spend over $100.

We will rent a car, but we don't want to drive around too much (traffic.) We'd rather walk. So please recommend something in walking distance (pref. around 10 min) from TI.

since we are going to see hoover dam and lake mead, we will be in vegas only after around 6:00 PM. so we need something to do 6:00 PM ~ whenever we decide to sleep.

What I need recommended are

Good dining place for dinner- (buffet or restrant) we don't want to spend much, but want to eat something good since it'll be our only dinner in vegas. Maybe around $100~200 for four people.

Hoover Dam - (anything else to do there other than just driving by?)

place to eat around the heartz rent-car center. or airport. (for quick, cheap lunch.)

Good casino (somewhere we can do something other than just put coins into the machine.)

Thnks.

P.S. if you recommend something, please be specific enough so I can understand.
Also, I need palce to eat quick breakfast around 6:00 AM before going to grand canyon. Around TI or in a route to GC.

Answer
There are a number of Las Vegas Web sites you can check out, one being Vegas.com
At such sites, you can find links for places to eat, free things to do, shows, rides, etc. etc. There's a lot of things to do in Vegas, and there's no way you can even put a dent in them.
And since you'll probably only be getting out for about a half day, you'll see that time go by quickly. And walking will take up much of that time given that the hotels are rather far apart when you're hoofing it.
Every hotel has a buffet. A buffet might be your best bet since you're on a tight schedule. Any of the bigger-name, fancier hotels have good buffets. Usually, the smaller hotel you go to, the lesser the buffet.
I'm not a big casino person, but where to go depends on what you want to play. You can play cards, roulette, even bet on sports. Think of Vegas as your oyster.
I think, honestly, your best bet would be to quickly check out some Vegas Web sites, get an idea of what you want to do, where you want to go, and then you could even ask the people at the front desk of your hotel some nearby places to go see, and to go eat. They're sure to know.
Also, someone else mentioned a Cirque du Soleil show, but they can be quite pricey. Just stick to the free entertainment. Many of the hotels, such as Caesars Palace, Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Venetian, etc., have huge shopping areas inside. The Bellagio has a garden inside that they change quite frequently.
Have fun!

Q. Im going to Santa Barbara Next week and would love to rent a fast sports car. I'm having a hard time finding where to do this. Does anybody know?

Answer
Well then you are having very few days. Find a good car rental company that is fulfilling your requirements of Sport car and make the booking as soon as possible. Because as you are getting late you are loosing the chances of getting the car because sports cars are already less in amount with car rental companies. Try this http://www.usacarsrental.com/ car rental company as it had a good list of cars availability, hope you find your car also there.

What are the top 5 sports cars i could get with a 20k budget?

Ivan Garci

Dont know cars too well but i have 20k to spend i want to buy a sports car preferably a sports sedan but still consideri.g a coupe but with mpg od no lower than 17mpg

Answer
"sports car" and "sedan" are mutually exclusive terms, despite Nissans marketing claims to the contrary. If you want a decent sports sedan that will be reliable, look for an Infiniti G35, you should be able to get a nice used one for 20K. And if you try hard enough you might find one with a stick - they make them but they aren't very common.

Sport Car!!!!!!?

FootballFr

I am 15 and in a couple of months will have my license. Right now I own a 1997 F150, around 250,000 miles, we did give it a new engine about 3 years ago, also it's in a good condition. I am thinking about selling it because I really want something sporty. How much could I get out if it? Also what is a good car or truck, not to expensive and is sporty like I want? I have looked at Camaros, Firebirds and thought about buying a Chevy S10 and sporting it up a little. I really like smaller trucks better. Try to give me a list of cars that might be good. thanks.

Answer
As for the price of your truck, you can check with KBB.com. You can check off all the options (etc.) and it will give you a fairly accurate going rate in your area.

As for buying another truck, you're only 15 so you many not know, but everybody is having trouble paying for gas. If you were to get a truck (or suv) you will have to get a job, just to pay for gas - to get to the job.

I would suggest you think really hard and ask people around you who has trucks and SUV about the cost of paying for gas.

Good Luck...

P.S. My civic gets 41 MPG on the hwy. I ain't hurt'n for gas money.

Best used sport / luxury car for $15k with around 35k miles?

Guanabana

I have ask this question before, but every time people just give me suggestions that are over my $15k budget (some of them WAY over my budget) or are simply cars that are not luxury, nor sport cars.

I am looking for a car that is

A used luxury or a sport cars
For $15,000 or less
with around 35k miles.
That makes at least 22 mpg combined
Pick ups and anything that uses diesel is not a luxury car.

I would be really grateful if you add a ebay link or if you see anything in my local market (Miami).
Bill, it is quite more common to find low mile sport and luxury cars than you may think. Sometimes the owners do not used them as their main mode of transportation, or they just don't drive a lot. My current car is from 2004 and it has barely 60k miles. Actually I have found a few cars in my budget and miles (mostly Audi A4, Acura TSX, late 90s early 2000s Porsche Boxster (doesn't meet my MPG criteria, but I have seen a lot with that kind of millage) just to name a few.
Brent, I ask because after doing my own research, I might find that others people opinion may be valuable or they may find something I overlooked. Yes, those are entry level luxury cars, but are luxury cars. I don´t need to go over 150 mph to commute to work. I want a car that is comfortable and with amenities and if I can´t find that, a car that is at least fun to drive. The Audi A4 is not related with the VW Passat other than sharing the engine, and the Acura TSX is not related at all to the Civic, other than being build by Honda (it is the international Accord, as the TL is also based on the Accord and like a lot of luxury cars are based on other midsize cars). If I wanted just a fast car, I could get a Mustang GT like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GT-Premium-Coupe-4-6L-Fuel-economy-EPA-highway-mpg-23-and-EPA-city-m-/130863557190?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item1e78136a46=

Answer
$15K is a little low for a used luxury car with 35k miles. The average vehicle is driven 12-15k miles per year and based on that you would be looking for a 2-3 year old luxury vehicle. Most anything in the luxury category would sell for a minimum of $40k new and few, if any, would depreciate $25k over a 2-3 yr period. Good Luck

What's a quick, fun, sports car I could buy or pay off below 30k or 25k?

Cesare

I'm looking for a quick car. I had the wrx in mind, and also the 135i. I'm looking for a fun car. I do plan on heading to the track here and there. I also plan on modifications. Reliability is also a good factor.

Throw out cars and why. I'd really appreciate it.
I've also considered later 350z models or an S2000. Hopefully hardtop. Not a huge convertible fan.

Answer
I don't like convertibles anyways, so I wouldn't suggest them.

Mazda Rx7(older car but still amazing) example: http://autos.yahoo.com/used-cars/mazda-rx_7-cars01-4043668016364214054;_ylt=ArHjB78Jk0M4nZV9k6CUjLjiB19H;_ylv=3

Impreza (STI if possible)

Mitsubishi Evo(you can get the Evo XIII or IX for under 20k or an Evo X for around 30k)

Late 90's Mazda Miata with a small block V8 swapped in.

Nissan Z cars are always good, too.

Is a 2006 Audi A4 a good car?

Vandere

I'm buying a first car and my mom was saying that she could easily afford a used Audi, Mustang, or something around that price range if i wanted one, only if I financed it, and I saw a used 2006 Audi A4 at my nearby Audi dealer for 16k. I talked to my mom and she said it is reasonable and she would think about it.

But basically what im asking is if the 2006 Audi A4 is a good car? The one listed is FWD (Not Quattro) 2.0T and has 50k miles on it. Since it is FWD, compared to quattro, it pretty economical. It gets 24 city, 32 highway.

Thanks and hope for a good answer. If the answer is no, id also like some recommendations for alternatives.

Answer
The Audi A4 is a premium compact executive luxury car, offering a sublime interior and a decent drive.

Some things to take note of:
- Maintenance costs would be costly; Audi is a premium luxury marque.
- Old Audis have a dodgy reputation for reliability, but this model year should be fine.
- Insurance quotes can be expensive.
- The turbo will cost you a lot to replace when it spoils. (in about 6-7 years later)

True, you could get a brand new car for $16,000, but those cars are of a lower class, resulting in them being less luxurious/ comfortable/ classy/ great to drive.

Do your research before buying it. Google '2006 Audi A4 reliability'" for some reliability ratings.
If your budget is good, I would go for it.
It is a very classy way of getting around, in comfort, luxury and has the drive to match its looks.
Good luck! :)

I am trying to find an insurance company that will insure a fleet of luxury cars. Some worth over 150,000?

Nick

This would be for a rental company. The problem that I am coming across is that no company insures cars worth over $100,000. The other thing I am looking for in an insurance company is one that would freeze my rates if my cars haven't been rented for a while. I have called an endless list of insurers and even the most promising one won't cover vehicles over $100,000. If anyone knows of any companies that do cover cars of this price-point I would greatly appreciate the tip. Thanks to all taking the time to read this!!

Answer
Here's the scoop: car rental companies have the HIGHEST physical damage rates. You're GOING to have 30% of your cars totalled in a year, and 60% with some kind of physical damage claim. What's the TOTAL value of your fleet? Budget THAT for physical damage coverage.

That's why REAL car rental companies 'self insure' that physical damage coverage. CAN you buy physical damage coverage? Yes. But you're not going to get "odds". If you have a $3,000,000 fleet, you'll be paying $3,000,000 in premiums a year for physical damage coverage.

You will not be able to buy this yourself - you will HAVE to use a local agent. And if you called ME for a quote, I'd explain this to you, and if you still insisted I put the work (I'm estimating 30 hours of my time), I'd charge you a $5,000 broker fee, to be refunded IF you buy the coverage through me, just to cover my time.

That's why you're having a hard time getting quotes - everyone is pretty damn sure you're just wasting their time. Plus, you don't go from zero, no prior coverage in the industry, to owning a fleet of rental cars - and again, since REAL rental car companies don't carry physical damage coverage, just asking for it is a major hint that you don't have a clue what you're doing, and don't know how either insurance or the rental car industry works - which is a recipe for either a major fraud case, or a bankrupt insured - neither of which an insurance company wants to deal with.

Whats a good sports car under $80,000?

Q. I saw a few ferrari 360's under 80 but i also like porsche caymans. Any idea what kind of car i should get. I want something that will turn heads
Im not a woman thats just the original name i used for some reason when i created this account. And to "V" I already drive a 2004 Mustang GT

Answer
Personally with that money I would go with a Nissan GTR 2009 or 2010. They turn heads! And you can get them for like 60k-ish now. The rest of the money would have to go to mods. Exhaust and paint is all you need. Maybe a rear seat delete with a carbon fiber fill in. :)
Ferrari 360s are nice, my dream car when I was a kid in fact, but they are outdated! When you roll up next to a new 458 you'll start crying when they speed off before your traction control knows what to do. Porsche Caymans are nice, but too slow for their price. Lambos can't turn.
New Mazzies are out of your range.
Or you could get a 94-97 Supra, ship it to Top Secret in Japan, let them mod it to 1200hp and ship it back!

What sports cars should I look into?

Xylarax2

I have a Subaru Impreza right now, and I'm looking to get something new. I have broad tastes but am looking at something for 30-60k price range. I am looking at the Evo X, WRX STI, Lotus Elise, and 370z. I'm wondering if there are other vehicles I should look into. I'm not a fan of VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes (mostly aesthetic issues).

I'm looking for something fun, 2 doors 2 seats is fine. Porsche seems slightly above my price range. I want racing suspension, so luxury vehicles are out, but sound system and leather seats are both nice. if above 3k lbs. 300+ hp required.
I will probably grab a bike eventually, but they accomplish very different goals. I live in Washington State, and motorcycles aren't very fun in the rain, and we have a lot of it.

Answer
If you're looking for a 'Sports car' you really should not include the little 4 or 5 seat sports sedans. A true sports car is a two seater, or at most, a 2+2 coupe.

If you want a true sports car, you can't go far wrong with a Chevrolet Corvette. They're still available new for under $50k The Porsche Boxter is also in the under $60k price range. If you want smaller and lower priced, Mazda is still building the MX5 (Miata.) Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice are out of production now, but still nice little cars for a budget price.

Suitable luxury car for family trip to europe?

Ali

In July I am going to Munich Germany for 3 weeks with my family. Which luxury car will be suitable for the 5 of us. We will not only stay in Munich but will also be visiting Prague Zurich and Paris. I was thinking to rent an an Audi A8 Navigation from europcar, will it be the same Audi A8 as in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIanXBL1-OA
Please tell

Answer
The Audi is a great car... if you are renting anyway just about anything will be like new and be fully covered. I found the people carriers better for longer journeys but of course the locals still use their Mercs and Citroens to eat up those long motorway miles.

What are the American luxury cars?

James

I'm from Europe, and our 3 most common luxury cars are Mercedes, BMW and Audi, by far.
And then higher in the ranking comes Bentley, Maserati and Aston Martin.
And then I guess super cars like Ferrari and Lamborghini come out in the top.

Of course you still have the millionaire rides like Maybach and Rolls Royce, but those are rare in every country.

But whats the deal with the US? I mean... I have seen a Ford Mustang only about 10 times in my life. I have seen your best selling truck, the Ford F-150, only about 5 times in my life time. So that makes me wonder about the differences in luxury cars.

I'm guessing your luxury cars are Lexus, Cadillac and..erm... Lincoln maybe?
I see Lexus cars on a weekly basis, I see Cadillacs a few times a month, but I've never seen a Lincoln.

Who can enlighten me more on this subject?

Answer
Well first of all there are three Japanese car brands that are luxury produced here for the US. Acura (branch of Honda), Infiniti (branch of Nissan), and Lexus (branch of Toyota). Now American luxury brands are as follows, Lincoln and the discontinued Mercury from Ford, Buick and Cadillac from GM, and Chrysler has always been sort of a hybrid of both luxury like the 300 model and some economy. We also have BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Jaguar, Maserati, Aston Martin, Maybach, and Rolls Royce here too. I'm sure I'm missing something.

high-mileage petrol consumption...?

Adham

Got a question on homework that mentions cars with "high-mileage petrol consumption". Doesn't make it very clear, does that mean high MPG or low MPG?

Thanks

Answer
High mpg is caused by mainly sports cars with engines 3000cc and above.
Low mpg is noticeable on common cars such as 1000cc up to 2000cc

Any USED luxury cars/sports cars with 30mpg+ city for $20,000?

Rick Ross

That is a big ask for good mpg, swag, and 20k.

BUT IS THERE ANY OLD CARS OUT THERE THAT I MIGHT BE LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND?

(DONT SAY ANY 11, 10, 9 MODELS, BCUZ THEY PROBABLY ARE GONNA BE A LOT HIGHER IN PRICE)

Answer
Older cars generally have horrible gas mileage and since you said sport hell no your getting 30+ mpg deaf and gas efficientcy don't mix

What is Dubai like for a visiting student to AUD for 4 months?

Ash

I heard all about the wealth: everybody owns six cars, five houses, and jet set to Italy for the latest Gucci bag.
I'm not interested in that. I just want to take a few business classes and learn some arabic at AUD Dubai. I would live on campus. (thank God because I would surely meet my death in a commute to dubai)
Can somebody explain to me life in Dubai outside of going there for luxury holidays? I want to know how much it would really cost a single student to eat (since I guess thats not included) take some horseback riding lessons (although I don't know about driving anywhere too far) and go places like the movie theater or wild wadi park?
I will not need to spend five days at the Al Burj. Anybody got any idea what normal people live like in Dubai and how a normal student would live at AUD?

.best time to visit? (climate wise)
.clothes NOT to wear? (although I'm already a bit conservative anyway)
.what classes are like at AUD? (if you know)
stuff like this

(heard the kids there are super rich. Well, I'm not. That won't be a problem if I don't happen to be able to go to the England for the weekend or sport the entire spring collection of Armani will it?

Thanks for any of your answers. And since my alternative option is EGYPT, tell me how that fares against Dubai.

Gracias
:D okay, so you are right. Maybe they are not all rich, but thats all you hear about from Dubai. I just wanted to know how people live besides the glam (because I know its not glamorous all the time) Thank you for your answer. I needed at least an idea of how things operate there on a normal basis, whats around the city on a normal basis. Living somewhere is quite different than just a visit and 4 months can become a long time if you don't know what you are getting into. I will check out your sites offered. Again, thanks a ton.

By the way, if I ever do leave campus: go shopping, to see a muesem, a movie, etc, what would you advise taking as far as transportation to these places?

Answer
What makes you think that everybody in Dubai is super rich, owns 6 cars, 5 villas and travels to Italy for the last Gucci bag? You can find rich people all over the world.

Best time to visit would be between November and April if you do not want to deal with humidity and hot weather. But - until April it may be to cold to go swimming at the beach.
All day in Wald Wadi Waterpark will cost you Dhs 165.

Beach wear at the beach, otherwise get dressed decent (no boops falling out, belly free etc).

Classes of AUD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_University_in_Dubai

As long as you do not want to leave the Campus, eat in the Cafeteria or go grocerie shopping and prepare your own meal in the central kitchen. Otherwise you will find many places where you can buy "cheap" food like Shwarma, sandwiches etc.

The following link will provide you with things to do in Dubai. Maybe you'll find something that fits you.

Is this a good prologue for a thriller novel?

This is the prologue of my new thriller project - 'ZERO HOUR'

July 20, 1996
Ain Sokhna Hilton Resort, Suez, Egypt

He decided to come in the evening.
Hassan Abbas pulled his Mercedes SL-600 into a tight turn, before accelerating into the courtyard of the resort, the suspension expertly absorbing the cobblestones. He glided to a halt just beside the reception block, where he switched off the ignition, snatched up his jacket, and climbed out of the low convertible sports-car.
Walking round to the back, he used the remote locking system to electronically open the boot. The hydraulic arms lifted the carbon-fibre shell, allowing Abbas to pull out his leather attaché briefcase.
The resort just happened to be one of his favourites in Egypt, and the location â just off the Suez canal â could be stunning. He wondered who had recommended the hotel to the man he was here to visit â a man who Abbas knew was a complete sand Arab.
Walking briskly, he made his way across the courtyard, heading for the area where the swimming pool and bar were situated. The heels of his shoes snapped gently on the cobble-stones, giving a steady beat for Abbas to walk against. Walking around the entrance gate, he walked down the brightly illuminated path that led around the swimming and onto the bar that was atop and island in the middle of the water.
He wiped his forehead from the heat â twenty-five degrees Celsius. Even for an Egyptian night, that was very warm. Even he â a man who had lived in Egypt nearly all his life, didnât like this type of heat. Surprisingly, he preferred the British climate.
He walked along the bridge over the pool, and glanced around as he did so, looking for the person he had arranged to meet tonight. Sitting at one of the straw tables, was him.
The man definitely look like an Arab. More of a tradi-tional Englishman than a traditional Saudi. The immaculate grey suit was a direct contrast to Abbasâs relaxed polo-shirt and cream trousers. The shoes the Arab was wearing too, where obviously English leather.
Abbas stopped for a moment and looked around at the location where he was sitting, checking whether there were any other people in the proximity. After assuring himself that no-one would be listening on their conversation, he walked towards the man sitting at the table.
âAh, Hassan.â The man said warmly, standing up from his comfortable seat. He outstretched his hand, and Abbas shook it gratefully.
âSadoun Khamil, old friend, itâs good to see you.â Abbas replied in greeting, as both of them sat down at the small table.
Abbas placed his briefcase onto the ground, leaning it against one of the table legs. He glanced at the table itself. There was all the usual things that one would expect to find on a bar table, joined by an exotic looking cocktail.
âHassan, may I offer you a drink?â Khamil asked, his tanned face stretching into a grin.
âGratefully.â Abbas replied, wiping his forehead again. âPreferably something ice cold.â
Khamil clicked his fingers, and instantly a waiter strolled over to them.
âMojito?â Khamil cocked his head towards Abbas. âWhite rum, sugar, sparkling water, and spearmint. Original Cuban, and all ice cold.â Khamil gestured towards his own cocktail.
âYeah, that will be good.â
The waiter nodded, bowed, and walked away towards the bar, where three other men were sitting.
âAnyway, Hassan, we need to talk.â
âIndeed.â Abbas agreed, leaning down to reach for his briefcase. He picked it up, pushed himself away from the table, and clicked it open. Inside was a Apple laptop computer, a set of pens, and two identical files, each one marked with a simple phrase in Arabic.
Abbas took them both out, placing one on his side, and handing the other to Khamil, before snapping the briefcase shut, and placing it back on the ground.
Khamil had opened the file, and was flicking through the pages. âIâm guessing this is the research you told me about two nights ago?â
âYes.â Abbas nodded, opening his own file.
Khamil nodded too. âIâll tell you now, Iâm not happy about it. Even now, before we have made any contact with them, Iâm not comfortable about it.â He paused for a moment. âIt just seems so, unusual.â
Abbas sat back, taking in what he had just heard. âI too, am unhappy at the implications of working so closely with them, Sadoun, but we must face the facts. We cannot develop this technology for ourselves, at least not within the foreseeable future, and if even if we buy what we need we are still faced with the very difficult and important problem of delivery. My analysis in this report suggests that co-operation is the only option which offers us even a slight chance of success.â
Abbas stopped and waited. The two men were best friends, but Abbas worked for Khamil, and just there he had staked not only his career, but also his life on that single mo-ment. Despite his western appearance, Khamil was a ruthless, barbarian person, and he had extreme powe

As one thriller writer to another. It's my opinion but I think you overdo the product placement, the adjectives and the adverbs. This is basically good stuff but over-embellished. Setting a scene is necessary but should be done with an economy of words. A good edit's in order.
Talking of words heels usually clip or tap but not snap.
I guess this is a first draft so you won't have picked up the obvious mistake in the passage about the arab who looked like an arab but was dressed like an Englishman.
I find it hard to believe that two Muslims would drink alcohol together. I know they serve it in hotels in Egypt but mainly for the tourists.
I'm not worried about it being a prologue if, as you hint, it takes place some years before the actual happenings in the novel.
I can see where this is going. I can't see them doing a deal on WMDs with the Israelis so it will have to be either the Russian Mafia, the North Koreans or the Iranians. It would be interesting to find out.

Moving to NYC soon, do you have any advice?

Kandy

I am a from Boulder Colorado, I am moving to NYC in mid feb. I am a 23 year old white girl moving to NYC for business. I got a job from a friend in the film industry. My pay is good but only ok for super expensive NYC. I have only been to NYC twice in my life and I loved it. Where is a good neighborhood have heard greenwich village is nice. And do you have any general advice. And how bad is the crime? Are there any areas in Manhattan I should avoid? Any General advice would be much appreciated

Answer
Greenwich Village use to be one of the places where it was for artist, but now it is more with high rental apartments, yet some tenement buildings still there with rents more pricey.

You may try looking at some places further north or the outer boroughs like Williamsburg, Parkslope in Brooklyn, Astoria and Sunnyside in Queens, East Village and Chelsea in Manhattan.

Rents usually start off for one bedrooms at $1,500.00 to $2,400.00 a month for a one bedroom and that depends on your budget.

If you are looking, use a suitable broker or real estate agency. Never use Craigslist.

EDIT:
When moving here, become familiar with our subway system, that is how we natives get around. Having a car is a luxury, but not recommended when you have to get to certain places.
MTA website can help you at http://www.mta.info

As far as crime is concern, we are the safest city with measures to combat crime. However we always recommend that you do not display any jewelery, electronic devices (cellphones and Ipads and Iphones), and travel with friends. Be weary of anyone that wants to talk to you asking for directions or want to talk to you on the side.

automatic swap to manual?

ThisIsMyNa

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 EX v6 that is automatic. I don't know much about cars but I was wondering if I swap the transmission to manual, how much would it roughly cost? I'm not too worried about what shop would swap it because I can find someone who can do it for me. I bought it for $3000 USD

Answer
Well, this is a luxury car from Mazda and this was the fist year model. Actually assembled in the USA. But it never came with a manual transmission as an option. I am not sure why you need a manual transmission but the question here is what manual transmission are you thinking to have installed? This is an older car and the expense is not going to make much sense not matter is the labor is free or low cost. This is not a performance vehicle being a four door sedan with a V-6 that does not put out too many horses. In fact one of the best characteristics of this car is its fuel economy. But, hey, it is your money and your car. I would have thought that if you were looking for a manual transmission vehicle that you would have purchased a car with a manual transmission. What you are looking for is information on parts and you need to address this question to a car specialist that sells car parts. Best of luck.

What cars have an auto-manual transmission?

spence 20

I would like to know what cars have an auto-manual transmission in it. I would like to try to stick with American cars, but might think about European, NO asian crap. And would like to be able to find one for under $10,000. I know the Pontiac G6 is one, and I like that car, but what other cars have them?

Answer
Rolf @ Connor. Toyota had the biggest re-call in the history re-calling 100% of their cars. They now have a 40% re-call rate which is the highest amongst all car companies. They also lied to the American Government. Innocent people died in Toyotas, because of a screw up they made. What's so reliable about that? They released the 2011 models and they are re-calling them too. Ford released 2011 models and no re-calls.

Anyways unfortunately very few affordable cars have auto-manual transmissions. A lot of Germans cars do have them though like Mercedes-Benz,BMW, Audi. However I doubt you'll find a German luxury with auto-manual transmission for $10,000. The problem is luxury car companies released it first, and luxury cars cost a lot. A 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-class costs more than $10,000. Affordable car companies recently started putting auto-manual transmission(like in 2009 or 2010)...so if Pontiac G6 has one, I would say go for it. Pontiac is a nice car. I can't think of any other American car that has one. Although look at Cadillac and Lincoln, they might have it. They are cheaper than German luxury cars too.

Sorry if I wasn't any help. Good luck!

ok not really. I have a jeep liberty but i dont consider mine it i haz thee pink slip! >=l

this is what I am looking for in a car:
-coupe(sedan if cheaper)
-manuel
-modifiable

The no-nos in my next car:
-v8
-4wd/awd(*sigh* bye Subaru *cries*)

I want to learn drifting in this car. I will probably take it out to the tracks for my first time as well (once most mods are completed). Besides that, your everyday average driving car.

Budget:less than 10k, The cheaper the better.
oh cmon rouge. don't give that you old hag.
I said THE CHEAPER THE BETTER. I'm NOT looking for a NEW car. I love the Cobalt but I need something cheaper. Screw the economy, I need to get from point A to point B so I can work. All american my ass. American automakers laughed at japan for not much muscle. Now who is laughing?

Answer
There are actually quite a few cheap and sporty coupes and sports cars that could meet your needs. Here are my personal short list of RWD cars for an aspiring racer or drifter which you can still live with.

Nissan 240 - universal drift car of choice. It's cheap, practical, and easily modified. The only downside is every other drifter will have one too.
BMW 325is - the E30 and E36 generations (80s-90s) offer a good blend of performance and (relative) affordability.
Volvo 242 Turbo - slightly oddball choice, but Volvo's old rwd coupes can make a surprising amount of power
Mazda Miata - great handling and fun, but low power (when stock) and practicality
Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro - cheap and unrefined power, but the ones you want obviously don't meet your no-V8 criteria

I personally have a 1990 Mazda Miata that I race in autocrosses regularly. Though not very powerful in stock form, the balance and predictability of its handling makes it very controllable in slides. I also drove it rain, snow, or shine for years without any real problems.

whatever happened to danny sullivan indy winner?

Answer
Hi, he does TV sports shows, mainly for the racing commentary. He also does test on the speed channel. In fact he had one just a few weeks ago and he was taking people arround and racing against Tommy Kendal in Lexus street cars. He seems more relaxed at what he is doing now than when he was racing.,

Hope this helps.

Is this going to be possible?

Kendall D

I have an old Chevy pickup truck that has been sitting out in the backyard for years. It hasn't run in forever and I'm pretty sure that almost everything needs replaced. Is it impossible to restore? And is it going to be impossible to pay for?
The year is around 1950

Answer
Kendal, we that love cars dont ask if its possible we ask how do I start. the old truck 1st must be examined by you for rust conditions to the frame and main body area's. this will deside for you the direction you will go. If the frame is waisted by rust a good quality resto will be costly and possibly not worth the cost, though some models of old trucks can still be. another option is to build a street cruiser model. in this case a race frame or modified frame system, mustang 2 front steering, modern V8 engine etc. these cars are desirable (trucks) because they run great, handle good and look old but good. I have a 57 Ford short bed wrapped rear glass and sport 500 plus horse power of big block Ford. I am less a body man than engine and still need to do the exterior and interior.

what could happen if i use regular gas in a luxury car, which requires premium gas? ?

Sam P

Answer
A black hole will form inside the engine bay of your car, swallowing the entire Earth and ending life as we know it....LOL.

Modern engines have a knock sensor which is read by the ECU and if the ECU detects knock, it scales back timing and adjusts other run parameters to assure that no damage is done to the engine by running it on lower octane regular unleaded fuel, even if it's designed to run on premium.

You won't make quite as much peak HP running it on regular if it's designed to run on premium, but other than that you shouldn't have any trouble. Don't sweat it.

what is the difference btw supreme and regular gas and how does it effect the engine of a luxury car?

Sophster

Answer
The Super gasoline has a higher octane rating than regular. People think that means it burns hotter but that is actually not the case at all. Super is made for engines with high compression ratios. If you put regular gas (which is actually more readily explosive) into a high compression engine, the compression of the piston will cause the gasoline to explode before the spark plug actually fires, so the engine doesn't run properly and "knocks" or "pings" as the gas may try to re-ignite when the spark plug fires. Always run the octane grade that is recommended by the engine manufacturer, especially if you have a high performance engine with high compression ratios.
