I got a smokin' deal on a luxury car - pun intended! What's the best way to get rid of stale cig smoke smell?

mewalsh100

I got a really good deal on a luxury car, but the guy was a smoker and I'm not. What is the best way to get rid of the stale smoke smell in a car? I plan to fully detail the car, so I'm sure that will help, but I'm wondering if there are any tried and true ways? Any auto detailers auto there?

Answer
Yes, we're here. I am anyway. 15 years experience. And I'm considered an interior specialist. I've detailed most every make and model out there. Even luxury and foreign vehicles. (Wanna try nerve wracking? Detail a Porsche worth $300,000 that is truly one of a kind). Getting rid of smoke smell takes time but it's not impossible. Please don't use Febreeze. It doesn't take care of the problem. Wet dog, smoke, body shop smell, dirty bodies, soured milk, rotten meat...I've dealt with it all and more.

The headliner MUST be cleaned - but carefully. Get it too wet and the glue that holds it will give out. And then you have a falling headliner to contend with. You should be able to tell where the most smoking took place in the car by the color of the headliner (unless it's a really dark color). That's where you want to really make sure you clean well. Citrus based cleaners are the best for this. May I recommend Lustro's Citrex? (It's listed under degreasers on the site but depending on how you mix it it's multipurpose with no dyes to mar your interior). Yes it's a bit spendy but well worth it and as a concentrate it goes a long way. Add a bit of their upholstery shampoo and you have an amazing cleaner. You want a soft brush to use for the interior. Stiff brushes are only good for carpet and mats. I use a separate brush for carpets and a completely different one for seats, door panels, etc. An odor absorber like charcoal wouldn't be amiss either. Just make sure you put it in a bag of some sort that will breathe yet keep the material contained. Vinegar in a dish placed in the car (while parked) will help as well.

Here's what 99% of people miss - your cabin airflow. Get a new cabin air filter if the car has one. And get a quality odor killer. With the car running, have it on outside or fresh air and fan on high. Find your outside inlets. They are usually by the wipers. Spray some directly in there. Wouldn't hurt to do this before you change the cabin air filter and after. If the previous owner used the recycle setting for the air flow it requires a further step. You should be able to tell when you run the fan on higher settings. If it smells musty, smoky, stinky or just "off" it is an easy fix. Change the setting to recirculate after spraying some more odor killer in the outside inlet. If it smells really bad turn on the a/c but put the temp setting on heat. And again, use fresh air setting and recycle. That will 'cook' out a lot of stuff. You might want to open all the doors for this and stand back.

And since we're talking about interiors let's go over dressings. Please don't use Armor all. You want a good quality, silicone free dressing. Armor all is neither. It also will leave a film on your windshield when the interior gets hot. And it attracts dirt and dust and plugs the pores of the dash. Emulsion 36 is the best I have found. It doesn't plug the pores of anything it's put on. A little goes a long way and it lasts. It can restore the look of vinyl and leather and some plastics back to new.

Using a carpet cleaner/extractor on the mats and carpets would be a good idea as well. If you don't have access to one a gallon jug and a wet/dry shop vac will do.

I'm not a Lustro rep. Every shop I've worked at has changed over to their products because they work if used right. The true test is time. What does the car look like after sitting on the sales lot for a couple months? I've done my homework and not only researched the different products out there but I've used them as well. I'd do half a car in one product line and the other half in something else. Nothing like a side by side comparison to really show differences. Drop me a line if you have any more questions. But most of all, have fun detailing your car. Take a few days to do it if need be.

p.s. Don't forget to take out the ashtray and clean it as well. A toothbrush is a great interior brush that works great for things like ashtrays.

I want to learn about cars but I don't know many, can you help please?

Can you list all the car companies please and what type of car it is like muscle, luxury, or what other type there is.

I DONT WANT COMPANY NAMES I WANT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARS EVERY COMPANY MAKES

Example: Ford Mustang, Ford Taurus, Chevy Comaro

Answer
Pretty much every car company makes every type of car. I'll try to break it down, tho.

Toyota
-Most statistically reliable make
-Owns the 'Lexus' brand, the most reliable 'brand'
-Also owns the somewhat less popular 'Scion' brand
-Cars are usually Front-wheel-drive (FWD)
-High initial prices, will last forever with few faults
-Generally dull cars, mostly bought by people who just want a car that will never give them grief
-Notable cars:
-Corolla: Very spacious for such a small car, used as taxis in a lot of areas
-Camry: Exceptional mid-size car for those who don't really worry about the 'fun' factor
-Lexus LS: Most reliable car since its inception in 1991
-'Hilux-Diesel' trucks: Not available in North America, this 2.4L Diesel engine is available in the 4Runner, the Tacoma, and the former Land Cruiser. These trucks are generally considered to be the most rugged vehicles available. A Hilux Tacoma and two Hilux 4Runners made history as the first vehicles to actually DRIVE to the ice-capped north pole.

Honda
-Second most reliable make
-Owns the 'Acura' brand
-Mostly FWD cars
-While it trails Toyota in reliability, Honda's are generally considered pleasurable to drive, and slightly cheaper for comparable models.
-Honda's tend to be lighter than comparable cars, but don't suffer in crash test ratings.
-Resale values reflect the more desirable cars
-Notable cars:
-Civic: A small car with a very sporty feel. The performance is often deceiving, as a lot of young drivers mistake the low-speed performance (comparable to some BMW's) as indicative of full-speed performance, leading to many understeer-related crashes (a common problem in FWDs). A very good car, provided one realizes that it cannot keep up with a proper sport sedan at speed
-Accord: A very well-priced mid-size car given the technicals. Also FWD. Also very good until pushed to its limits.

Ford
-Despite historically abysmally unreliable cars, has clawed its way up to become the third most reliable make.
-Owns Lincoln, Volvo, Aston Martin and a notable stake in Mazda brands
-Recently sold Jaguar and Land Rover brands to Tata of India
-Historically preferred Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) but current cars prefer FWD models with All-wheel-drive (AWD) options.
-Volvo has long since lost its place as the most safe brand, but this is mostly due to the appearance of minivans, which are the most safe of all vehicle classes, and Volvo does not make a minivan
-Ford is not making money currently, but has yet to request a US federal bailout
-Aston Martin vehicles are oft considered the most beautiful cars available, although they don't stack up in performance to their contemporaries from Italy on a race track.
-The Ford brand remains profitable in Europe, driven by sales of the Focus and Mondeo
-Notable vehicles:
-F-150: Pick-up truck. Top selling vehicle in North America in 2008.
-Focus: Compact. Took top-selling vehicle title worldwide the year it was released in 1998, and has stayed at or near that position since then. Considered the sportiest car in its class, and is considered the turning point of Ford's reliability image.
-Mustang: Ford's muscle car. Available in 'Poser' (V6) and 'GT' (V8). RWD. Also available in 'Why did we drop the aluminium engine for a stupid-heavy steel block when we could have just supercharged it' Shelby GT 500.
-Transit: Most popular work van produced. Most commonly equipped with a small 2.4L Diesel.
-Escape: A very popular small SUV with a hybrid option.

-General Motors
-Also has clawed its way up the reliability scale to #4.
-Owns 'Cadillac', which surprised the world by becoming the second most reliable brand (note that make is the builder, brand is the logo on the front of the car) in 2007
-Also owns Buick, Chevrolet, Saturn, Pontiac, Saab, Hummer and has partnerships with Suzuki, Subaru and Toyota.
-Hummer brand vehicles used to be used as forward attack vehicles by the American military, but since their use as defensive vehicles has proved ineffective, the contracts have ceased. General motors is currently shopping the brand around to raise capital
-General motors lost $52 billion in fiscal 2008, compared to the Canadian deficit of $50 billion. So to speak, GM lost more money than Canada.
-The Buick brand is profitable in China
-Notable vehicles:
-Saab 9-2x: A Subaru Impreza with some aesthetic touches. Still very well priced.
-Chevy Malibu: A very well positioned car often considered better than the Accord, Camry, and Ford Fusion. The hybrid is particularly well positioned.
-Pontiac Vibe: A Toyota Matrix, literally. The two vehicles represent a collaboration between the two automakers. A sensible small wagon.
-Camaro: Chevy's pony car. It is projected to remain far behind the Mustang in sales, as it always has.

Hyundai
-Surprisingly, Hyundai shows strong as the fifth most reliable make
-Strong recovery since offering ten-year insured warranties in the early 2000's.
-Owns Kia
-Spectacular value but considered cheap by many
-More expensive models don't carry the Hyundai logo
-Notable cars:
-Tiberon: A well priced car that some would call the only FWD sports car, due to its spectacular weight distribution.
-Kia Sedona: Minivan. Surprised the world in 2005 by taking the title of 'safest production vehicle'.
-Accent: A very affordable car which comes standard with everything a car should have but nothing that isn't needed. If you aren't concerned about image or driving enjoyment, this should be the first car you test-drive.
-XG350: A spectacular value that, given its price, is oft considered near-luxury. While it is not on par with cars such as the Lexus ES, the fact it costs barely over half the price makes this fully-equipped car worth the look.
-Genesis: Fresh on the market, this car is aimed to take on the Infiniti G37, BMW 335, Mercedes C350, Audi A4 3.2, and all at thousands less.

Volkswagen
-Owns Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley, and a notable stake in Porsche
-World leader in passenger-vehicle turboo-diesel engines, which are notably more efficient than hybrid gasoline engines
-Other than Bentley and Porsche, all Volkswagen vehicles are FWD with AWD options or solely AWD.
-Notable cars:
-Golf: The primary competitors to the Ford Focus
-City Golf: The previous model of the Golf, produced in Mexico for American sale at a notable discount
-Audi A5 and R8: Wait-lists were so long for these vehicles that test-drives were unavailable in 2008. The demand was so strong that if you wanted one you had to buy it having never sat in one.

I'm going to have to finish this tomorrow.

what are some cars that are made in china and the united states?

Q. can you name me some cars that are popluar and were made in the china, that the united states imported.
and cars that were made in the united states that are exported?

Answer
The #1 car made in China is the Chery, based on the US Chevrolet's smaller car. China exported 340000 trucks & cars during 2006, nearly double the year before. These are going to other SE Asia locations & Africa.

They are bringing in, from the USA and Europe, much fewer cars, more luxury types, they are now bringing in Acuras which are being made in the USA.

Much of the technology & management in the production of vehicles in China employs people from the USA, Germany and to a lesser extent, other Europeans.

Chrysler Jeep Cherokees are popular in China.

100% American Made Cars Or SUV?

GGB

I am looking for a go green type of luxury SUV. I currently drive a mercedes .. It is close to impossible to go from a mercedes to a Ford Escape. Which seem like the best model out there. I looked up the new hummer H3 with E86 fuel-the closest gas station is 45 min from my home ..
Caddy - the new go green truck is being made in mexico. What now! Mercedes has the blue tec model and I will most likely have to buy that.. So anyone have any idea on which Car's are 100 % American made completely. Seem most of the parts are coming from other countries ad they assemble the cars here in the USA- NOT WHAT I AM INTERESTED IN!!!

Answer
There is no such thing as a 100% American made car with 100% american parts.

Fastest 2-seater sports car for under $20k?

vankilsing

So I have been really interested in getting a retractable hardtop miata and then installing a turbo. Total, it should cost me around $16k (or so i'd like). 350z now have pretty competitive prices used, I am wondering whether it would be better to go with the miata turbo or simply a stock 350z. Is there something better than both of those? No suggestions with worse gas mileage than a 350z please. Thanks

Answer
Price parts for both and look at how easy or hard it is to get them!
The Nissan 350z is not considered a reliable car, if reliability is a consideration this would make it a poor choice. On this issue, this is not just my opinion, but also what Consumer Reports reliability records show.
But there may be a problem going with the retractable hardtop model- there may not be a bolt on kit to turbo charge this engine. Flying Miata at least does not make one. 2005 is as new as their kits go and I am not sure the if Begi makes one either. Flying Miata suggests a super charger works best on these cars. May be read on on the subject at http://www.miataturbo.net/.
As far as a different car to start with- I don't know of a more durable car in this class and price range to start with.

whats a really sports looking car under 20k?

Jesus

im looking for a really sports looking car. or just a fast vehicle like a ford lightning a cobra something just has to be fast and sporty looking

Answer
Are you looking to work on it yourself or buy and drive? If you have the time a 2g eclipse or talon would do the job. If your budget is 20k you could build a car that runs 12's easy.

If your looking to buy and drive I would go with a low mileage SRT-4 or Evo. Check craigslist, you can find some great deals if your willing to wait.

You can usually find a used f-body if that is more your style. Be sure to swing by the local barber and pick up a mullet while your at it.

electric sports car. one that I can aford?

gravyandic

Im VERY interested in an electric sports car. Gas prices are SKYROCKETING and in 3 years its going to be about 7.00$ a gallon. I would like some help finding an AFORDABLE sports car that runs on ONLY electric. I know theres a lot out there, and the most popular one is the tesla roadster, but it runs for around 100k im willing to spend around a max of 60k so if anyone could help me that would be grate. i also dont mind used.

Answer
At the moment the only one available to individuals is the Tesla Roadster, but this will change in approximately 1 year.

Available in California in October 2008, the Aptera typ-1e will cost about $27,000 with a top speed of 95 mph and range of 120 miles per charge.

http://www.aptera.com/details.php

Soon thereafter Aptera will introduce the typ-1h, a plug-in hybrid version of the typ-1e with a 40-60 mile range on purely electrical energy, and a range of over 600 miles total when in electric/gas hybrid mode, for around $30,000. On a 120 mile trip, the typ-1h will get 300 miles per gallon. The shorter the trip, the higher the efficiency.

http://www.aptera.com/details.php

Available in late 2008 or early 2009, the ZAP Alias will cost $30,000, have a top speed of 100 mph, and a range of 100 miles per charge.

http://zapworld.com/electric-vehicles/electric-cars/zap-alias

Soon thereafter the ZAP-X will be available at a cost of $60,000 with a top speed of 155 mph and a range of 350 miles per charge. This probably fits your criteria the best, as it's the fastest and has the best range for your maximum price.

http://zapworld.com/electric-vehicles/electric-cars/zap-x

Available in late 2008 or early 2009, the Miles Javlon will cost $30,000 with a top speed of 80 mph and a range of 120 miles per charge.

http://www.milesev.com/

Phoenix Motorcars will start selling their SUT to individuals in late 2008 or early 2009. It will cost $45,000 and have a top speed of 100 mph with a range of 100+ miles per charge.

what is the red sports car in the movie In The Electric Mist?

curious

Answer
Check IMCDb (The Internet Movie Cars Database) at: http://www.imcdb.org/movies.php?title=In+the+Electric+Mist
EDIT: Surprisingly, it not listed at that web site so....I rented the movie at BlockBuster and took a look for myself. It's a red Lamborghini convertible, I think. The wing doors are a feature only on a Lamborghini, right? I paused the movie on the car and have been searching for a photo match on the web but have yet to find one. I thought I came close when I came across a 2007 Murcielago Roaster but it's not an exact match. My husband thinks that the car in the movie may have been modified.

MY KIDS ARE BEGGING ME TO DRIFT RACE IRL CARS WHAT SHOULD I DO MAN I TRYED TELLING THEM NO THEY WONT LISTEN?

Spas Shotg

ok so like i pulled the drift car in at our hose in the garage one day and my kids 7 and 6 said to me daddy we wanna drift too i said well lets go watch some videos and play with your toy cars no we want to drift your car they pointed at my drift car i'm like your too young drift drift drift what are you kids doing stop it drift drift drift now their giving me the silent treatment somewhat unless their asking me if they can drive my car yet idk what to do please help

Answer
i recommend you show them what happened to people in car accidents because drifting is not the safest sport in the world... tell them "would you want this to happen to daddy?"

What car should i get to drift and how do i drift?

JJ

Answer
Unless you have tons of money, the best 1st car to learn how to drift in would be any POS rear-wheel-drive car that has a reasonable amount of power for as cheap as possible. Chances are you're going to wreck this 1st car (probably more than once) learning the basics of drifting.

Once you've got a handle on the basics, like turbocharged83 mentioned a Nissan 240SX is a good car to use if you're serious about getting into the sport. People have used 240's for years in drifting so you'll have no trouble finding parts and vast amounts of information to set up the car properly for drifting.

EDIT - as far as HOW do you drift, you induce power oversteer (spin the rear wheels) and "steer" the car by sliding the rear end under power while steering the car to keep the back end from overtaking the front end in controlled slides. Youtube has tons of videos of people drifting if you need to see it done instead of reading about it.

Tires on a brand new car...?

DesiKuri

Are tires on a brand new car a final good or intermediate goods?

Answer
Depends on the car, luxury and sports cars, BMW, for instance will put higher performance tires on the car. Your basic four door sedan is another story. They are what the factory recommends that goes on your car. to me that neans they are ok. The quality should be great, but if you are looking for more performance, higher speed ratings, there are usually better options.

Is baseball a dying sport?

Q. -The fanbase is aging.
-When I watch a football game, I see commercials mostly for such things as sports cars, deodorant, and energy drinks. When I watch a baseball game, I see commercials mostly for such things as erectile dysfunction medication, arthritis medication, and retirement investing.
-The TV ratings are generally horrible.
-Nobody around my age (27) really talks about baseball. It's really all about football and basketball. There seems to be almost no interest in baseball among younger people.
PS: Baseball is my favorite sport.

Answer
Its popularity is waning, yes, but the sport isn't dying. From before the first professional team ever formed till the 1960s, it was America's undisputed favorite sport. In the civil war, soldiers killed the time playing baseball. Babe Ruth gave it unprecedented popularity with his power.
Then gridiron passed it in the 1960s as baseball's offensive numbers went down. Since then, whenever it was felt that baseball needed a boost, the balls were juiced to produce offense. One of the major reasons that the commissioner and executives across the sport turned a blind eye toward steroids was because steroids produced offense.
So today that's where baseball stands. But things change. Maybe people will appreciate defensive skills and low scores, small ball and strategy, as well as the sheer pleasure of the game. It may one day be back on top. It might dip to 3rd, 4th, or even 5th most popular before that.
But it will always be alive. It is America's pastime forever, even if it isn't the most favorite sport.

Mustang as a first car?

Pug_Lover0

I have always loved Mustangs, so I'd be so happy for that to be my first car! I'm not a teenager, I will be 22 this year, so I'm not getting one to brag, show off, or speed. I'm not into showing off or speed. I want a Mustang because I like them. I like their appeal and body. The interiors (based on pictures) are just down right beautiful! I'd prefer to drive responsibly, get where I'm going in one piece and not destory or abuse my vehicle. So here are my questions about getting a Mustang for your first car -

1. What make/model would be best for me? I don't like convertibles, so don't mention those. As I said, I'm not into high speed. I don't want a car for show or to enter in car shows or something like a collector's thing. And of course, no I'm not into racing, so I don't need a race car style vehicle. I just want a nice, beautiful car that I'll love and be comfortable and safe in. On the Ford site, it says these are the models they have - V6, V6 Premium, GT, GT Premium, and a Shelby GT500. Which would be the "one" for me?

2. Would it be a smart idea to save some money and just head to the dealer, pick out a brand new 2013, have them customize the features (if the cars don't come with any already), then put a down payment and set up a payment plan? Or would it be better to go get a decent used one, have the additional features I want installed, then eventually, trade it in and get the brand new model when I've saved more? For a used one, I'd want 2008 or up. Also if it was used, I'd also want to ensure it was a legit and safe car and I wouldn't get screwed in the end. That's what scares me about buying a used vehicle. Other people have drove it and there could be issues.

The features I want are electronical - the number one "must have" for me is a back up camera. I fear backing up, so if I could see everything as if it were right in front of me, it'd be so much better. I'd also want a GPS, that way if I'm traveling, I can easily find directions for where I need to go. The final one is something I'm still kicking around - I saw something on a Buick commerical about some type of parking assistance. Something like that would be really awesome, but I'd want more information before I said yeah put it on my car.

3. Is a Mustang overall a smart "first car" choice? How good are they truly? Are they easy to work on if there's a problem? How long do parts last (is it a low expectancy, or a higher one)? Are they a pain to change the oil and stuff? How are their safety features and what not? Do they handle nicely/are they easy to drive? Are the common buttons you'll need confusing (like how to turn on wipers, lights, turn signals, spraying wind shield cleaner, etc...) or are they easy to find? With my parent's 2011 Dodge Caliber, the switches are annoying so I hear. I wouldn't want mine to be annoying to figure out.

4. Additional tips, info and input (if you have any) can go here.

Thanks very much in advance!
Also, I would definitely need an automatic, not manuel. All my family has ever used is automatic. My mom done warned my manuals are pains. She said when she first started driving, her cousin let her try his and she nearly stripped the gears... so yeah, I want to stick with an automatic I think lol

I'd also like some "modern" things - like keyless/remote entry and power locks/windows... but don't most cars already have that? My parents' Caliber does. I know I said I want a backing camera, but just in case - how is the Mustang's visibility? I've heard that their Caliber is bad for that, especially backing... but I don't know. It might be because my dad is taller and it's a smallish vehicle. I'm just saying - if my camera would break, or I'd want to just try it on my own, I'd want to be sure it was a vehicle with good visibility.
Exactly what I was afraid of and why I was really scared to buy a used one. It just seems to me like someone is passing their headache off onto me. I understand completely that people use and abuse these cars just because they're "sport's cars". It's ridiculous! They're such nice, beautiful cars! Why risk crashing it? When I actually DO get one... it will be very, very well kept and cared for. My brother's friend has a camaro and that poor car as been abused severely. It's kept outside in all sorts of weather (we live in Ohio... so we get it all - rain, snow, sleet, etc...). It's sad because it's a pretty car (solid silver, no stripes). With my Mustang, I wouldn't think of doing such a thing. It'll be kept inside and under a nice car cover.
I'm not a teen - I'll be 22 this year. It rains here... mainly in the summer/spring and the snow is completely iffy. Sometimes we get it in the winter, sometimes we don't. I notice a lot of people have them around here though. So... even if I'm not a fast driver/hot rod... the horsepower would "bother" me?
I have looked on Ford's website (did a build-your-own). I asked all these questions mainly aimed at owners. Someone should know the answers if they own one. I haven't owned one, so I have no idea how they handle or where the switches would be and stuff. I was looking for additional info aside from what I got from the make your own thing. Plus, isn't the purpose of Y!A to ask questions and answer them? That's what I did - ask simple questions that I'm unsure about. I asked about the make/model because i have no idea which would be best for someone like me who isn't into "hot rods" and just wants a nice, good car.

Answer
Personally, unless someone else is paying, don't buy new.

Anyways I'll try to go point by point. And congrats on going on to make such a momentous choice in your life!

1. If speed and power aren't you thing, then the more gas friendly V6 would definitely be the more sensible choice and will get you in less trouble. The GT's,the Shelby especially, are very powerful. Premium is just a Trim level that gets you more toys or luxuries.

2. I would most definitely buy used. You have to shop a little harder to ALL that you want. When you drive a new car off the lot, it usually loses about 10% of its value. If you bother to go through the options list with the dealer, you are probably going to get ripped off compared to those sitting on the lot, as you are more susceptible to the dealer suggesting some more expensive options. The ones on the lot are configured in such a way that the majority of people would have it done. You can trade in the old car and get more of what you paid for if bought used, and buy a slightly less used new used car. if that makes sense. Also if you look on autotrader or cars.com there is usually a button for a free carfax report. You get one per day, that should be your friend. I'll also post a link to how to buy used.

No parking assist. Only on luxury cars do we have that. Backup camera can only be used on cars with SatNav

3. I personally would not say that it is a good first car choice, but it has been the car of choice for Americans since 1965, as the car for everybody. It isn't the safest choice as power goes to the rear wheels, where most modern cars are to the front wheels. What this basically means is that the car is more prone to 'fishtailing'. Which if you don't know what you're doing, you'll get screwed. And it is worse when it is wet. So slow down when it rains. Oil changes are a necessity. No way to avoid it, you can ruin a car if you don't do general maintenance.

Reliability. Good. parts are cheap. General maintenance will help keep it running. Mustangs are fairly low tech, so that makes life easier. The current mustang's suspension is a very ancient design, but is very solid. It makes it more reliable, but not too good in the handling department, but it isn't terrible, deffs good enough. controls are general the same as most normal cars.

4.My car lover says sad face to the no manual, as it is part of the driving experience and definitely what makes the mustang fun. Also, I would not worry about beaters, as mustangs are almost always going to be repaired and restored by people who really love them.

Have fun and be safe. I hope you didn't get scared by all this.

Why does Japan gives America watered down version of theirs sports cars?

AllorNothi

Examples Evo didint have ay of the computerized differentials until years later.
why are they so stingy with their Nissan Gtrs? They finally sell them here. i'm sure they could have sold the previous versions here but too lazy to modify the car to meet our standards

Answer
Needing to meet strict California emission regulations, and trying to keep the price down to sell cars.

Most Honda engines here in the US have slightly lower compression ratios than over in Japan, which often results in a 8-10hp different. That is purely done to meet the emission regulations of California.

As for the missing electronics and such, it is due to the lower sale prices. I have a Best Motoring video about the Tokyo Auto Salon from years ago, where the representative from Mitsubishi states this as the reason. They wanted to keep their price tag down, so they could sell more, and also to better compete with their biggest rival... the Subaru STI.

The Nissan GT-R's are a very strange thing though. While they claim 480hp, this is known to not be the case. Each engine is hand built, so power varies between each engine. Nissan is also simply a big fat lair :) . 480hp is well below what the cars really make, especially when you realize that this rating isn't even supposed to be taken as 480hp at the wheels. They've been dyno'd to right around 480 WHEEL horsepower! This is the US model by the way.

Edit: For "Steven G". All horsepower specs given by ANY car manufacturer is the horsepower in brake horsepower, which is the horsepower at the flywheel/crank. This is common knowledge for any automotive enthusiast. On the site that YOU linked to, they even state that it's 480hp, not 480whp or 405hp at the crank, but 480hp.
http://www.gtrnissan.com/specs.en.us.html - Official site linked off of Nissan's official site.
http://www.edmunds.com/new/2009/nissan/gtr/100986601/specs.html
http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2009/nissan/gt_r/specifications/index.html

For my claim of 480whp, here are some links of tests done:
http://www.motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0812_2009_nissan_gt_r_dyno_test/index.html
http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/112_0803_2009_nissan_gt_r_dyno_test/index.html

So who needs to do some research?

Is a Scion tc considered a sports car by insurance companies?

_

I'm getting a new car. I have a Land Rover Discovery and its a piece of crap and drinks a lot of gas. I was going to get a Mazda RX8, I love them. My family has 3 of them, but my dad said no because the insurance would be high because its a sports car. Is a 2008 Scion tc considered a sports car by insurance companies? I am a 19 year old female by the way, if that matters. Thanks for any answers!

Answer
Yes.

The Scion tC is a sport compact manufactured by Toyota and sold under their Scion division in North America, introduced in the United States in June 2004 and 2010 for Canada. The name tC does not fit in with its stablemates, the xA, xB and xD, because the xC name designation is used by Volvo Cars for their lineup of sport utility vehicles. According to Scion, tC stands for touring coupe

Of course, coupe = two door, and to insurance in most cases, unless it's a pickup truck, 2 doors = sports car.

So, 2 door, and the manufacturer says it is a sports car.

Good sight-seeing places in the west coast?

da_maestro

Not necessarily for sight-seeing, but just cool places to visit somewhere in California, Oregon, or Washington.

I can plan for a trip of around 4 days, 3 nights. Don't know yet if it's by car or by plane. It's just 3 people going: me (age 23), my mom (age 53), and my grandfather (age 75).

Thanks for your suggestions!!!
By the way, I live in California, so driving might be easier.

Answer
Oh my!! Where do I start?
Oregon is a gorgeous state! What there is to do there depends very much on what kind of things you like to do, but pretty much Oregon has something to offer for everyone.

Cities:
Portland Metro Area ... the excellent Oregon Zoo, Oregon Museum of Science and Technology (OMSI), a terrific downtown area, Rose Garden Event Center, and many other museums, art galleries, clubs, as well as the yearly Rose Festival and Parade.
http://www.travelportland.com/
http://www.oregonzoo.org/
http://www.omsi.edu/
http://www.rosefestival.org/

Salem ... Oregon's capitol city.
http://www.oregonlink.com/

Eugene ... one of the few 60's era counterculture cities still basking in it, with the Oregon Country Fair the big event in July. It's also a laid back and beautiful, very livable, city.
http://www.planeteugene.com/
http://www.eugene-or.gov/portal/server.pt

Further south ... Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland (home of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival). All the major cities of Oregon are on the Interstate #5 corridor, I listed them north to south. One notable exception is Bend, which is becoming as much a major city for Oregon as the others, and it is nearly dead center of the state, on the east side of the Cascades.
http://www.ci.medford.or.us/
http://www.grantspassoregon.gov/index.aspx?page=8
http://www.orshakes.org/
http://www.visitbend.com/

Other notable towns:
Astoria, on the far northwest edge of the state along the Columbia river. Pristine and scenic, a number of movies have been filmed there including Kindergarten Cop, The Goonies and Short Circuit. Fort Clatsop, very near Astoria, is where Lewis and Clark wintered during their expedition.
http://www.oldoregon.com/

Coos Bay, on the southern Oregon Coast, once the worlds larges lumber export port until the timber industry dried up. Now home to a casino and the primary town in southwest Oregon along the coast.
http://www.coosbay.org/

Sisters, just east of the Cascades, near Bend, a resort and tourist town with lots of art and culture.
http://www.el.com/to/sisters/

Junction City, north of Eugene, home of the yearly Scandinavian Festival where the downtown area is turned into a Scandinavian City for 4 days.
http://www.scandinavianfestival.com/

Notable scenic spots:
Multnomah Falls, just east of Portland ... recommend you take the old scenic highway from Portland all the way to the Falls ... you will pass Crown point viewpoint, several other falls, and see a fantastic view of the Columbia and Washington State.
http://trips.stateoforegon.com/multnomah_falls/
http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_150.php
http://www.vistahouse.com/

Oregon Caves, in southcentral Oregon, an awesome sight, with walk through tours of the caves, simply amazing.
http://www.nps.gov/orca

Crater Lake, also southern Oregon.
http://www.nps.gov/crla

Sea Lion Caves, Florence Oregon, central coast, the only caves on the mainland where you can see Sea Lions in their native domicile.
http://www.sealioncaves.com/

Things to do in Oregon:
Water sports of every sort, beach combing, hang gliding, sailing, deep sea fishing, whale watching, hiking, snow boarding and skiing, rock climbing, mountain climbing, windsurfing, camping, exploring wilderness areas, white water rafting, you name it, it can be done in Oregon!

I have only scratched the surface! There is so very much more, but I already made this way too long!

would like to move to oregon, what area (city) should i concentrate on when i visit?

J

I would like to move to an oregon-like area. The things that appeals to me most are nature and trees. I would like to visit the area. What city would be a good fit for me? I'm kind of granola crunchy & I like the outdoors. Id like to live in country. My options are fairly limited as id be a student, so would have to live near a city, and if be renting a room, even tho id prefer a country feel. I have a car. I prefer flatlands. Id have a car. Id like a place where the ppl are friendly and I can make friends too. Thanks.

Btw I can deal w rain I'm from northeast. Thanks :)

Answer
Eugene area is sort of flat and is a college town, but you would want to live on the outskirts. I'd actually recommend Ashland area in Southern Oregon. It is flatland, with much country around it, and the mountains not too far away. There are many smaller towns to live which is cheaper, and within driving distance of the city. Ashland is a college town, but also sports the 'granola crunchy feel' :-) like Eugene. There is also Eastern Oregon for Blue Mtn Community College, but the towns are smaller (more farming), and if you crave an occassional 'big city excitement', it is not the optimal place.

Not buying anything in 2010...Wanna join me?

lulu

I just turned 30 years old. I'm an independent female professional who loves to shop! I live with my Fiance who is very frugal and hardly spends any money on himself at all! He'll wear the same pants until they have holes and rips all over them! I love this about him and want to be more like that! I make good $$ and am very thankful! I love to help others and have donated a lot or money and time to people in need. Lately, i was helping out with the unemployment office where I live. I helped women with their resumes, donated full outfits for them to wear to interviews, and so on. I felt good about it but also felt terrible because I have so much! I never think twice before buying something that I want. So, i've decided that for 2010, I will NOT purchase clothes, shoes, accessories, makeup, beauty products, purses, etc. Nothing materialistic. I will only buy necessities like food and Hygiene items. I know it will be hard but my fiance will be monitoring my finances...I know I can do it! Anyone out there want to join me?

Answer
I think you are lucky to marry the right guy. In this materialistic world, It is hard not to pay attention to TV commercial. I live a simple life a long time ago. Material things does not have effect on me.
Even though I could be able to drive a luxury car paying cash for it, I decided buy a small compact car. I did not really care of people thinking what car i drive. I am a little older than you but not much, but my 401k is around 100k, my roth IRA is about 21000.00. Cash in the bank about 30000.00. I was not show off but by living under your means, invest wisely. I could careless people think of what I am wearing. I am living frugally but not cheapskate but spend wisely. When I see you describe your fiance, I live like that 10 years ago. Because of that, in this recession, I do not miss anything. Actually, it makes my life a lot easier. I have no debt except my mortgage.
You will be supprise that people are amazed that sometimes you pay for thing with cash with large amount.
When I eat out, I am able to leave a good tips because before we have a good job, we are coming from humble beginning.
So come back to 2010,2011 and beyond. Nothing has changed me much. Still the same old me, same cellphone for 5 years, same cloth, same style of cloth. so material things are just out side, what inside is the most count

Sporting events in San Diego?

gold_miner

We are planning a vacation to San Diego at the end of June beginning of July, Sea World thing for the kids but my husband and I would like to go to some kind of sporting event, maybe a baseball game or preseason football???? Anyone know of any events or anything going around this time????

Answer
Preseason football doesn't start until August.

The Padres have a home stand from June 29 thru July 5. (Astros and Dodgers) The Dodger series is pouplar and is 4th of July weekend. July 2nd is a 2 for 1 day game. July 3rd is fireworks and July 4th is a free beach towel giveaway. Both games will be sold out. July 5 is a day game. You might want to get your tickets online now.

BTW Petco Park is one of the nicest ball parks in baseball. You really should check it out.

Also be sure to check out the Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park. At 30,000 sq. ft., It's one of the largest model railroad exhibits in the world. Kids love it and they get in free. Besides the Zoo, there are a dozen museums in Balboa Park with lots of exhibts that are kid and dad friendly.(dinosaurs, aircraft, cars, trains, IMAX)

Inexpensive car paint job in San Diego?

Amrel Maes

I'm looking for a shop to paint my 1987 Mustang GT for under $1000

Answer
Maaco will do it.
Also Earl Scheib.

There is also a place down near the 8 freeway by the Sports Center and another up in San Marcos. I'm sorry that I don't know where it is.

The independent places can be found down on Main Street in Chula Vista, or if you're really brave and you speak spanish or have a friend that does, you can find a place down in Tijuana in the car district. Make sure you see some of their work. You'll likely end up getting it done for a couple hundred.

At the first two, you'll find it for under $800 and the others will be less than $500.

Old reliable luxury car?

b00rb

I want a "semi"-luxury car cheap (<$3000), I'm a high school student so I need it to last at least 2 more years, hassle free. I love how BMW's look, but I've heard they're not that reliable, so I've been looking at Infinitis. I want a sedan/coupe with decent gas mileage, from the '90s, and I by "semi"-luxury, I mean I want the car to have features like leather seats, power seats and windows, a/c, power steering, etc. Decent gas mileage is a plus too (15 MPG<)
Any suggestions?

Answer
If you are looking for a hassle free car for $3000 you may have a long wait. Try perhaps a top end low mileage car from a brand not noted for luxury cars, maybe a Hyundai or Kia perhaps. Domestic cars may also be worth a look, such as Buicks or Mercurys. Don't forget a luxury car will still have luxury car running costs, and all old cars will need repairs at some time. Good luck!.

Best used luxury car for ~2500?

Andrew

Hi! I am looking for a used luxury car (Lexus, Acura, BMW, etc.) for around $20k-30k. It's gotta have good gas mileage, around 28 mpg or better. I'm 6"5 btw so it will have to be big enough haha.

That's the most important stuff, but then:
Under 50k miles
Bluetooth/nav would be nice

For the price range, A.) is this even possible and B.) any recommendations?

Thanks so much!

-A

Answer
I don't think what you want is out there.

Luxury cars generally have substantial engines (at least a V6) to deliver performance, and most of those don't get better than 25 mpg, tops. Needing a big luxury car makes it even tougher, both in terms of mpg (bigger, heavier cars or SUVs get worse mileage) and cost (bigger luxury cars cost more).

If you back off your mpg requirements a bit.....I think what you want is doable. Something like a Lexus RX350 for example.....you can get one that's 3 or 4 years old with under 50K miles for $20K - $25K.....but mpg wise, maybe 22 mpg.

Otherwise.....look at smaller cars with smaller engines. Generally, that means non-luxury or hybrid. You don't buy a luxury car to save money on gas. Finally, keep in mind that most luxury cars require premium gas, which increases the cost further as compared to something that doesn't, regardless of mpg.

Good luck!

how often do car resale values drop?

mel23

Looking into buying a 2009 325i. I see some range from 18-25k. How often do they drop in prices? Would I see more of a decline by the end of year? I'm clueless about how that works. Is it better to buy at end of yr?
I ment 328i

Answer
Car values theoretically change every quarter (3 months), when the new Kelly Blue Book and NADA guides are published. In addition, mileage is always considered. More miles=lower resale. There is no set time for a large drop in value on any used car. On a new car, waiting until the end of the model year (NOT the calendar year) may result in some rebates/incentive financing being offered by the manufacturer, but on a used car, there is no such thing.

"It's better to buy towards the end of the month when the car hasn't been sold for a while. That will make price negotiations easier."

No, it won't. The dealer paid a certain amount for any car on the lot, and will expect to make a certain amount of profit. Nothing you do is going to change that. Forget related myths such as "They will take a loss to make their quota" and "They can take a loss, and get the next guy", as they are completely untrue as well. Keep in mind that the average used vehicle sits on the lot for 30-45 days. If it hasn't sold, the dealer will usually sell it at an auction, making a minimal profit

"Also, towards the end of the year is a good time to buy a used car. Luxury car prices drop about $5k a year until they hit a certain point and slow down."

Again, this is false. If prices change quarterly, why would they "drop $5,000" after any specific date?

"So yes, it's best to buy during December."

No, it's not...

If you can't afford the car you want now, keep looking, maybe you'll find a deal. Maybe you need to look at less vehicle. At worst, wait a year or two until the car you want is a bit more affordable.

Sorry it's not what you wanted to hear.

why are manual transmission mercedes benz cars have such low resale value?

Pikachu <3

are benz known to have some sort of bad manual transmission reputation? do they go bad quickly? or is it just the fact that since benz is a luxury line anything that isn't automatic has lower demand and lower standards? explanation please?
overdrive/vvt usually doesn't kick in until higher rpms

one recognizable car brand name that has intelligence on overdrive in the lows is honda's i-vtec but thats probably it...maybe toyota as well.

Answer
Benz' are considered luxury vehicles and a strong majority of owners want an automatic transmission. Having a standard limits the potential buyers that will be interested in buying your car.

On the flipside of that, if someone wants a standard Benz, they will look for one & keep searching until they find it.

I'm in the market for a new car. I narrow it down to the following models.

1. 2014 Honda Accord V6
2. 2013 Honda Civic EX-L
3. 2013 Ford F-150 V8
4. 2013 Acura ILX
5. Honda CR-V
6. Toyota Camry V6

I Don't really car about gas. What I really care about is which car is going to last me more than 10 years with out many problems. The Honda Accord I know they had problems with the V6. The Civic looks like a good deal but its to slow. The Ford I like it but many bad reviews. The Acura nice luxury car but also many bad reviews. The CRV I read many recalls. The Camry may be the one but I'm scare because Latoya is know for recalls. Out of this car I mention which one is the best one. Should I get a warranty in case the engine or tranny goes bad in any of this car? I need help please help me out and god bless.

Answer
They all have decent warranties, if something doesn't go wrong while it's under the manufacture warranty, it's unlikely to go bad after. Recalls aren't that big a deal. You don't have to pay for them, and they generally aren't anything major. Generally.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, but I think you had better consider your aim. Is it mileage, cost of operation, performance, room?
The CRV and the Civic are dogs compared to the rest, I think that particular Acura may be a dog too.
Does the Acura require high test? That can get pricey.
Camry's are a tad boring, but the V-6 models are fast.
I'm unsure about the reliability of the Honda V-6. I've got a 2006, which I bought with 55K on it. I've put 50K on it, and it's never missed a day of service not have I had any engine trouble. Best car I've ever owned and I've been driving for 38 years.

I would pick up a Consumer Reports car guide, and go over reliability info, as reliability appears to be your primary concern. Or spend 12$ and you can get an online subscription.

I stopped buying new cars a few years back. I look for 3 year old cars that are coming off lease. Leases require routine maintenance, you know why they were traded in, and if you buy it from a dealer who sells the same brand new, you are hedging your bets. New car dealers aren't keen on selling unreliable cars, as they are hoping you will come back and buy a new one at some point. The last 6 cars I've bough (me, wife, oldest kid) have been off lease, and they've all been great.

Can a teen afford a 2013 Lexus 450h?

I'm 15 going onto 16 in 2 weeks. In July I'm going to be working full time during the summer. So I'm going to make at least 3000-4000 max, until the school year starts. I'm Leaving my regular school to do independent studies so I can do my homework whenever and I'm going to have a part time job so I'm guessing I'll be making 400-500 max. My parents are gonna give me money for gas. I have a debit card I put all my money on there but ll the money I make in the summer I'm gonna Give it to my dad because I would normally spend it. I'm gonna also wait two more months so I know how much I make in my part time job. I'm going to be giving the car payments to my dad and all the left over money if there is goes to the gas and maintenance and me if there is any money left. I'm going to go to Beverly Hills Lexus with my dad he knows how to deal with the car business. I obviously can't drive alone until the following year but my brother who's 18 will be driving it in the mean while. Will Insurance be super expensive I'm guessing it will we used to have Allstate and now we have mercury my dad puts my brothers car under his name so he doesn't have to pay so much ? If the car is put under my name will it be expensive or can I put under my dads and then switch it over later on or put it under my moms then switch it to mine? Am I financially able to afford the car? Like oil change? Maintenance? Gas? Insurance? Payments? Etc. I live in Los Angeles btw things are more expensive. Please no sarcastic rude answers telling me I'm crazy just straight forward with the facts. And let me know what other luxury car to get or a really nice car that I can afford?

Answer
Not even kind of.

With taxes and options, that's about a $55K car. Ignoring for a minute that no one is going to sell you a new Lexus with nothing down or only several thousand down, the monthly payment would be roughly $1,000/mo for the next five years. Insurance, probably $200/mo. Maintenance, figure another $100/mo anyway, plus whatever gas you said your parents are paying for.

Ownership cost for that car is approaching $1500/mo, and again, that's a five year commitment. Most adults with college educations and full time, good paying jobs can't afford that car.

At 16 with a part time job......not even close.
