Why do people say that European sport cars have better fuel economy?

sports cars list on Here are the 10 fastest cars available on the market (production ...
sports cars list image

Steven

The general consensus is that European cars, including their sport cars, have better fuel economy than their competitors (this especially the case when compared to American automobiles). Almost every "Car with the Worst MPG" list (or one with a similar title) almost every sport car on those list are either models of wither Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti, and other European models. If these different lists all have these same models in their count then there must be something to these similarities (in this case that these European sports cars have worse fuel economy than those from non-European manufacturers).

So why do people keep stating the opposite of what appears to be the truth in this case? Can someone explain this clearly to mean?

Btw this question is only about sport cars.

Answer
I never heard of people saying that Euro cars are more efficient.

But anyways, look at Porsche. They have some of the cleanest running engines. In big cities, the city air going into the intake is dirtier than the air coming out of the exhaust. So it is like a vacuum cleaner.

And the 480HP+ Porsche 911 Turbo that reaches 193mph and goes from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds gets 25mpg highway and 18mpg city. There is no competing supercar that comes close to those figures.

I am getting my driver's license really soon and I'd like to buy a used, reliable sports car?

What years of 3 series are best for convertibles?

luxury cars wiki on Luxury Car poster.jpg
luxury cars wiki image

j w

Thinking of getting a 3 series convertible for a second car to drive on weekends etc.
I'm going to look for a 1999 thru 2004 with 60k+ mileage with a manual trans (although I would consider auto).

Any years better or worse than others as far as safety and reliability?

Answer
Definitely buy a 2004 Bmw 3 series convertible. The 2004 BMW 3 series coupe and convertible where given a major facelift at the front fascia and also minor touch ups at the rear of the car. The 1999-2003 models are a bit outdated, they look like the older generation of the 3 series despite the fact they are still "handsome" used cars. Cons on buying a 2004 3 series convertible is it will obviously be sold for a higher price then then its 1999-2003 models. In 2004 the coupe and convertible had a facelift which included new headlights, new front wings and bumpers, new selections in exterior colors, and redesigned sidemarker lights and LED tail lights. Over all the more attractive of the 3 series convertibles would lie within the years 2004-2006 opposed to the 1999-2003 3 series convertible models, but in all "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Of course no one can denie that the 2007-2010 BMW 3 series covertibles are good looking but the MSRP price for a used or new 3 series is way beyond being comparable with 2004 models. Basically, I would take the 04. Hope this helps.

What do the suffixes on the Acura cars mean?

Jeremy

Like 3.5 RL, and 3.2 CL. I drive an RL and I always wondered what the last 2 letters stood for. My friend said RL=Royal Luxury, TL=True Luxury, CL=Contemporary Luxury. But IDK about my friends explanation.

Answer
They don't necessarily mean anything, but here are some ideas:

RL = Road Luxury / Replaces Legend. (Legend is an Acura model name in Japan) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acura_RL

TL = Touring Luxury (luxury touring car) / True Luxury

CL = Contemporary luxury / Coupe Luxury (luxury coupe)

Should I get a Nissan 300zx or Nissan 240sx?

Me

I'm 16 and i've saved up 6000 and both of these cars are under that amount. I wanna know which one is better and more reliable for a kid.

Answer
Both cars are old already so they both will give you some trouble here and there. The good thing is that probably must big problems have been resolved already.

If you are looking for power, the 300ZX is a better choice since you can choose between the NA (non turbo 222 HP) and the TT (twin Turbo 300 HP stock).

I personally would go for the 300ZX TT but only as long as I have extra money in case something goes wrong.

If you are looking for something cheap cause you are short in money, then go for an economy car. Japanese and European will always be a better choice, but American will be better for price.

Those who said the Camaro is better, well, I donât know about reliable⦠I doubt it as American cars are really REALLY bad and feel like they are disposable items. But I am sure, the Camaro is NOT faster than a 300ZX TT. Get your facts straight. Do some search online and see it yourself. And you can get double power from a 300ZX TT (600 HP) with not much more money compared to a Camaro or any non turbo car.

If you want really reliable and cheap, get yourself a Corolla or a Civic. But if you go for sports cars, be ready to have more $$$ ready for fixing.

Good luck.

Alpha-Bits
by E. Frederic

The passersby zipped by sipping coffee on the freeway that ran along the old mill buildings which were being retrofitted with new businesses. Among the additions was a large day care center devoted to the working poor. The sign for Alpha-Bits loomed over the back of the building in advertisement and illuminated the plow sand at night and gave the drug addicts a guiding light. The bricks of the building were the color of coffee and tea and was topped with a exaggerated and large children's block letter displaying the letters A and B.

"Honey, this is where you'll be going after school while daddy and I are working," my mother told me as we exited her red Escort hatchback and I wiped my nose on my Starter jacket. There had been babysitters but not one responsible or sane enough to last more than a couple of weeks. One was a skateboarding kid named Mark who smelled like reefer. Then there was the quasi-schizophrenic Stacy, who threw a cat on my Dad for a laugh and my Dad had gotten his bare back scratched up something fierce.

Stepping out of the car with my backpack, I peered up at the building in which I would be herded daily, along with my crusty-nosed, maple-syrup-in-hair-and-old-milk-on-breath schoolmates in a Ford van after school. The building represented a corrections facility and I felt a man condemned.

Up to this day my life had consisted of a luxury which, I felt at the time, could never be pried my grasp. Staying at home, being fed my favorite sodium-enriched foods, watching cartoon mammals beat the brains out of each other.
Pre-school was only fun and the days spent there were swift. I got to be a little human and go out into civilization on my own for the first time and would routinely receive a Charleston Chew and a Dr. Pepper for my troubles. Then on home for more Macaroni and cheese and price is right and outside-the-lines coloring. And at dinner I would finish my meats and starches and toss the vile vegetables into the trash. And off to sleep to dream the dreams of a small child.

Then there was kindergarten, and the stakes were raised drastically. The first first day of school. Personality. Kids who just wouldn't share in preschool, were now taking shape as bullies. On my first day, when I still had red streaks on my cheeks from rubbing salty tears from them, one such bully took a jab at my back. I would soon learn that the reason he punched, not only my back, but many other boys' backs, was that he felt the sound that it made was pleasant, like a burlap sack loosely packed with meat tossed to the bare earth.

âWatch out little wimp,â he said as he struck. He pretended to be in the bully business for the glitz and glamor and authority, but for him it was all about that little noise. âBhuphfâ

I began to well up with tears again and he forcibly turned me around and gave me a second, (even harder) blow to the middle my back, next to my spine, for he would not punch bone because it did not create the desired effect. I tried to reason with him through my bawling.

âWhu-why, wou-,â taking in a huge breath of air, âwould you do that?â I said, the words bursting forth like a frightened cat from a picnic basket.

âCuz. You're a little whimp. Little whimp. Lil booger!â he replied, and he gave me one final shove as he walked off down the corridor feeling satisfied for the moment. I walked into a classroom where my academic career would officially begin.

My kindergarten teacher, Ms. Abernathy, did her best to introduce us to crude academics and fill the role of mother for us confused and dour youngsters. We read a story about a fox who wore a tophat and a toad who wore a monocle that drove a roadster down country roads to their friend the mallard's home for tea. At noon some smelly rectangular mats were brought out by Ms. Abernathy, and she had a crate of milks for us. We drank the milks, the world dimmed, and pretty soon we were dozing comfortably. Ms. Abernathy had shut the blinds.
âYou kids stay where ya's are and behave!â she said with a fresh smoke in her mouth. I was watched her as she opened the heavy black door that led out to a metal staircase as she lit up into the wind. She noticed my curiosity about her and made a shooing motion with her hand. I got scared and looked away quickly.

I turned my concerns back to the mice on-screen, waves battering them in a scene that was rich in primary color, like all great Disney films, when I heard a little creature next to me make a sound.

âWhat's your name? My name's Kirsten. I like Smurfs,â it said again, clearer this time. I turned to my left and noticed it was female with short blonde hair and a pair of eyes so big they seemed to be bursting from their lids. I stared at her for a moment, unsure of what to say.

âI like Smurfs too. And David the Gnome,â

âYeah,â she said, looking away a bit, seeming as though she may have regretted her decision to speak to me. We both resumed the film
Brenda settled back into the room and reviewed some papers.

There came a moment, when the cartoon swashbuckling and general chaos on-screen had ceased to make room for an onscreen kiss between two mice. When the movie ended and Brenda brought up the lights, Kirsten, unexpectedly, grabbed me by the jaw with her little chicken hands and pressed her lips very hard against mine. A very violating, and especially young first kiss. Despite the violation, however, I suddenly felt elated. Kirsten, on the other hand, pulled away and stuck her tongue out at me and silently put her spread out-hands on either side of her head, looking like a moose with antlers, and ran away laughing like a maniac. And my experiencse with females has fit that same basic pattern.

At 5:00 pm the trial came to an end when my mom came to pick me up in the Escort hatchback. She asked me how my day had been. I had held her up for 15 minutes this morning with my hysterical crying in front of the school's fl
lagpole so she knew that much at leas. I thought about my back bully and became sullen again.

âI hate school. It's dumb,â I said, pouting and glaring out the window as we exited the lot and merged onto Granite St.. The day had become gloomy while our movie was playing.

âDon't say that. You need school. You didn't have fun in your little kindergarten class?â

âNo I didn't. I don't wanna go back tomorrow,â I told her.

âYou don't have to go tomorrow. Just consider yourself lucky that the first day of school fell on a Friday.â

Yes! How could I have been such a fool? The weekend. When my dad would get a couple days' rest to drink beer and curse the Red Sox as they botched late-season games (this was in 1989). The same deal must go for school, and that realization, and the thought of Kirsten, caused a great rush of excitement and optimism in me. No bully or disgruntle childcare professional could take that away from me. Until Monday.

how much will I be spending after college/what payments do will I have to make?

Lauren

We don't really learn how much money everything costs. I know i'll be spending money on house payments food and gas.. but what else? is there some kind of website i could go to that would let me enter in my salary and city and all that stuff? I want to make sure that with the major I have I will be able to live a comfortable lifestyle. I'm graduating soon and needless to say, IM FREAKING OUT. thanks for any advice.
also, if you must know, I will be a child life specialist making 39,000 a year (yikes) and I'm looking to live in augusta ga, atlanta ga, savannah ga, charlotte nc, or charleston sc,... basically, i'm not leaving the south east!

Answer
You can start looking at how much it cost to rent a 1 bedroom apartment, or if you will be living with friends or would like a roommate to cut down the cost the cost of a 2+ bedroom apartment. Remember if you are renting, you will need first month, last month, and a security deposit. If you are planning to buy, take a look at how much apartments and houses cost in the neighborhood you will be living. When purchasing a home, you should have at least 10% for your down payment, preferably 20%. Home owner's insurance if you will be buying your own place. If you are renting, rental insurance.

For your other costs, you would need to factor in electricity, water, and sewer fees. Depending on how much luxury you would want, you would also need to think about having cable. Your monthly food expenses. Average amount you are able to afford to go out for each month. Also if you still have car payments, car maintenance, gas, car insurance. If you have student loans, you will also need to factor in that as well.

I don't know if there are any websites, but you can try look to see what the cost of living for a certain state or area would be. This will give you a general idea of how much things in that area cost.

What are some things to look out for while planning a trip to Hawaii?

I'm planning a week-long vacation to Hawaii during the summer with my girlfriend. I've never done this before, so I'm looking for tips and cautions on having a nice time and avoid getting ripped off. Should I book online or with a real travel agent? Do I need to rent a car while there? Weekday rates vs. weekend rates. Anything that you think will help me make good decisions about this trip would be great. Thanks a lot.

Answer
Do you want to stay on one island, like Oahu, or visit other islands? Prices are often cheaper on the other islands, but there is also less to do. Flights between the islands are inexpensive.

Do you like outdoor activities - deep sea fishing, sailing, scuba diving - or are you more interested in nightclubs and parties? Historical visits - nature walks - pineapple plantations - gorgeous golf courses and outdoor festivals. Hawaii has all this and more, but to use your time wisely, figure out what they have (read) and what you want to do and see. Check what local festivals or celebrations might be going on when you are there.

Investigate - I found a GREAT hotel in Hono - not luxury but nice people, free continental breakfast each morning on the roof, well located and inexpensive (Waikiki Gateway) - it's not the Hawaiian Village but you'll end up with more money in your pocket to spend on other things.

Sometimes local car rentals can give you a better deal than the big names. Sometimes you can get a better deal if you book air tickets AND hotel AND car all at the same time. Again - investigate.

Check your address book and with your friends to see if anyone knows anyone who lives there. That can be a great help.

And of course - sun screen, LOTS of water, a hat - and leave room in your suitcase, you'll want to bring things back.

Are cars cheaper on mainland America?

Jason Sant

I live in Honolulu, HI and since everything is imported here, stuff is more expensive. As far as prices I know groceries can run up to a dollar more than prices on the west coast. I was wondering if luxury cars are cheaper there. I was looking at craigslist and comparing prices of some of the same cars. Some dealers in Seattle were selling there cars a few thousands of dollars cheaper than Hawaii price but some dealers were selling it for a few thousands more.
@ Beachgirl: I plan to live there.

Answer
Yes, you can get luxury cars cheaper on the Mainland but if you want to bring it over to Honolulu it's going to cost over $1000 for shipping. (plus any $ you spent going over to the Mainland to check it out, test drive, etc)

BMW is trying to get the M Coupe certified for US import by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This takes time and the M Coupe may have some performance enhancements that exceed the ever stringent US emissions criteria. Several of the BMWs in recent years have had differences between the Euro Version and the U.S. versions.

I want a reliable luxury suv for under 8kdollars. i really like most land rover makes, anybody have suggestions? and a tow package is a plus. i would prefer a car with leather, and a moonroof with some prestige and a reliability rating that is near toyota, nissan lines.

Answer
You can't use 'reliable' and 'Land Rover' in the same sentence.

Trust me, If you can't afford more than $8K or an SUV, you can't afford to maintain a Land Rover.

Look for something like and older Nissan Xterra, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Sequoia or Toyota Land Cruiser. The $8K maximum may be an issue, though, unless you dont mind having one with 100K-150K miles.

Good first car for son?

Need something cheap on insurance and preferably under $8k used. He likes SUV's and luxury-type cars. (Looked into a mustang & jag for him, the insurance premium was sickening--so no sports cars). Trying to keep insurance payment under $100/mo and trying not to get anything older than 2000 if possible. Thanks a head of time for your suggestions!!
Oh, and looks good. thanks!!

I am looking to buy a luxury SUV (i.e., considering Lexus RX, Acura, BMW X5, Infiniti, etc.). Any suggestions? I am looking to get one that has about 50k miles and am looking for value. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer
Personally, I love luxury suvs, and I want them to be my first car. I most advise you to stay away from American cars, they're junk on wheels. I favor German cars, because they're beautiful, luxurious and powerful, but Japanese cars because of their quality. I must recommend the 2010 Mercedes GLK350- starts at about 33k, sounds overpriced, but its worth it. They last for like 300,000 miles and are very reliable and very comfortable. They get good MPG and are very nice suvs. Google it, and look at it. If you don't like it, I still recommend to stay away of American cars.

Does it make sense to buy a car in this recession?

Lemmur

I have a car already, a gas guzzling SUV, so I was thinking about buying fuel efficent car for around $7000.

The gas is around $3.49 for 87 and the cars I'm looking at are luxury cars requiring 91 $3.89/gal.

So should I hold off on the car purchase and keep the cash in the bank in case the economy gets worse?

Answer
Since when are we in a recession? close to one perhaps. If your house is worth 100,000 less than two years ago, ok twist my arm, call it a recession but don't go blabbing it all around, George W might rush back from Saudi, w/o getting more oil.

So do your part to stimulate the, OUR, economy, buy a nice fuel efficient offering from GM, Ford, or Dodge. How about an 03-04 caddy cts, v6 and regular gas? Still looks great, the 08 cts just won Motor Trends car of the year.

Would you pay $5 dollars a gallon at the pump of would you start looking at buying an electric vehicle?

sports cars drawings on Brock_daytona_drawings_large
sports cars drawings image
Q. Nothing urgent about this answer, just a curiosity. I see drivers pull up to the pump in their big SUVs and wonder if they are happy with paying the amount they are paying, for the next few years, or even pay more. Or whether they would look into buying an electric SUV. As much as people complained about the range of the old electric vehicles, they still don't do more than 60 miles a day in their SUVs. Now, new electric vehicles can go 3-5 times that range without charging.

Answer
I already drive an electric vehicle. You should try it - there's nothing quite like driving past gas stations, and looking at all the chumps lined up there (nothing personal!)
*
Here's the latest electric car on the market:
*
http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html
*
The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altair Nanosafe batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:

-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
The Phoenix is a real car, being built for fleet use right now. Here's another electric car for sale right now:
*
http://www.teslamotors.com
*
The Tesla electric sports car can out-accelerate a Ferrari (0 to 60 in under 4 seconds), does 130mph, and close to 250 miles per charge. If that's not enough performance for you, here's a concept EV slated for production:
*
http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/03/19/zap-releases-details-and-drawings-of-their-impending-644-horsepo/
*
How about up to 644 horsepower and a top speed of 155 mph? The ZAP car has a 350-mile range, using the same Altair batteries as the Phoenix.
*
No other alternative fuel has electric vehicles beat for efficiency. High efficiency means less fuel per mile. Less fuel means less pollution (no matter what gets burned at powerplants), and low fuel cost. My own EV drives around for about a penny per mile in electricity. Beat that!

I was wondering if ur aloud to put police car light in ur car and even a light bar, is it aloud?

Answer
The answer is... MAYBE, depends on your local law.

When the first Transformers movie came out, a man modified his Mustang to resemble the Decepticon in the movie that looked like a police car, complete with fake lightbar, black and white paint job, and even the side door decals authentic to the letter.

The local cops, while did not approve, can't do anything about it. Owner actually checked with local district attorney, who can find NO LAW prohibiting it (at that municipality). AS LONG AS the owner doesn't light it up.

If you light it up, you'll end up like this guy:

What brand of headers would be the best for my 2002 Subaru Impreza?

D

I currently own the 2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5L. I have it straight piped with a air intake at the moment and have been trying to find some headers that would be great for my car. I have been looking mostly at the Borla equal length headers which is a perfect price for me at $370, BUT people have been telling me that replica Borla's are better than the real ones. What would you recommend getting or looking at for headers? Thanks!

Answer
As far as I know Borla doesn't make Equal Length Headers, just Un-Equal Length Headers. You can get a set of Borlas through Summit Racing.

Part Number BOR-17183 priced at $331.97.

Un-Equal Length Headersa will give your Subaru a nice rumble with an aftermarket exhaust.

I just recently moved to Florida and am shopping around for a new car. Something reliable they'll get me from point a to point b.
I have a 2000ish dollar price range (I am a poor college student).
I have been looking at.

Ford Probe
Dodge Stealth
Eagle Falcon
Nissan 200zx/240zx
Honda Prelude
Toyota Supra

Basically what I'm looking for is a sporty 2 door from the 80s-early 90s with a reasonable price tag.

Any other suggestions?

Answer
For $2000, the closest thing you'll get to a 2 door sports car in the early 90s is an integra, mx6, or 200sx.

I have a 2003 Dodge Neon SXT, I want a new car with more HP, but I'm not rich..?

First off, I know almost NOTHING about cars. Just some simple stuff. So pardon me if something doesn't make the best of sense.

I currently own a 2003 dodge Neon sxt (Graduation gift) and I wanted to do some things to it to give it more HP. Our family mechanic told me I could get cold air intake, a chip, and if I REALLY wanted to, turbo.

I have the money for all of that, but I was wondering if it would even be worth it doing all that to my Neon, or if it would just be worth having my Neon as my "drive around" car and purchasing another car, possibly one with a bigger stock engine.

Only problem is I can't afford a Viper, Mustang, or any of those incredibly expensive sports cars. I want something subtle, decent, that I can put some money into and get what I want. Speed.

Please help!

Answer
If speed is want you want and you have all the funding to add a turbo to your Neon I say park the Dodge. If you want some speed and major power go for one of the late 80s early 90s model fox body mustangs. Make sure it's a 5.0 and a manual. You can do mods along the way and you definatley won't be dissapointed especially when you get it to where you can stand it up under a red light.
