Which is better fuel efficiency wise and money wise, the 03-07infiniti g35 or a 97-99 mitsubishi eclipse gsx?

Both being manual..also if the eclipse is tuned more, but the infiniti is stock

Answer
Well, as long as you don't do all kinds of drag-increasing visual modifications, the gsx will return pretty good mileage with a 2.0 and a 5-speed. I have a '95 Neon that gets between 22(beating the crap out of it) and 40(highway all the way) MPG. The Eclipse is a little larger and has a bit more drag naturally, but with a turbo and a 5-speed, it should still get 30-35 at the way-top-end. This is assuming you don't put on a 3-foot spoiler, body kit and roof scoop. None of which will do any good unless you're track racing, and even then the body kit and roof scoop are useless, and the spoiler next-to-useless.

But not knowing exactly WHAT mods the gsx has, how much HP, or how aggressive the tuning is, I honestly can't say what kind of mileage it would get. Agressive mods, 200/300-plus hp, you might get 30, but likely it'd be less because the car would need fuel-system modifications. Most of your power would have to be made in the air system and driveline for your fuel mileage to stay the same. Better transmission, smoother limited-slip or locking differential, lighter-weight and more-efficient pulleys and gears, etc would get you a little more power while making your engine run more efficiently. But once you start trying to get huge hp numbers you start using forced-induction mods that up the boost in your turbo or swap it for a larger one, and adding higher-flow fuel injectors and lines. This starts eating up the gas and digging into your wallet. It's best to just keep it simple with more efficient components.

The Infiniti I know little about, aside from that it's a 6-cylinder car and from a luxury-ish brand. So it probably won't get great mileage, but probably not horrible either if it's got a 5- or 6-speed manual. Probably high 20's, maybe 30.

Initial cost, I'd bet the Infiniti would be more expensive, being from a luxuryish brand. Maintenance, i would bet that the Eclipse would be more expensive. While it's commonly said you can't kill a Neon 2.0, you CAN break things in the engine with repeated abuse. Yours, though, would probably be the DOHC 2.0. Those are known for breaking timing belts, and when you start upgrading, they sometimes get 'cam walk' (Google it), so get on a DSM forum if you get the Eclipse and they will already have covered the subject extensively, so they can talk you through it.

why do land rovers have such a bad rep?

You know n

i have loved rovers every since i was little. i loved the beauty of the car. i always knew id get one day. i found my baby on December of 2012. the price was decent for a land rover discovery 2004. the guy selling me the car was nice enough to let me take it to the mechanic to see if it need fixing. he even let me drive it there, i used the high way and let me say it made me fall in love with this car even more. its everything i wanted and it was such a good price. yes the car had leaks that needed to be fixed, but every car has problems. my question is why do land rovers have such a bad reputation? i hear so many people calling it a piece of shit car, but why? besides the gas it eats up, and the leaks which every car gets, whats wrong with it? does it break down fast? btw i live in new york i go to school and work, it takes up 15 to 25 minutes of my time if i drive. and i go to see my boyfriend its about 35 minute drive. i dont find this car so hard to maintain. can anyone explain to me why this car is so terrible without just saying its shitty? thank you :)

Answer
first of all the mpg sucks on all models. regardless if it offers luxury features and off roading abilities. Land Rovers are just too expensive to maintain and use as an everyday vehicle. Also since it's an imported vehicle the repairing and maintenance can be very expensive due the fact that the Jaguar Land Rover Manufacturing plant is in Europe. Good offroading car but overall mpg is so BAD, EXPENSIVE to repair/maintain.

What years of 3 series are best for convertibles?

j w

Thinking of getting a 3 series convertible for a second car to drive on weekends etc.
I'm going to look for a 1999 thru 2004 with 60k+ mileage with a manual trans (although I would consider auto).

Any years better or worse than others as far as safety and reliability?

Answer
Definitely buy a 2004 Bmw 3 series convertible. The 2004 BMW 3 series coupe and convertible where given a major facelift at the front fascia and also minor touch ups at the rear of the car. The 1999-2003 models are a bit outdated, they look like the older generation of the 3 series despite the fact they are still "handsome" used cars. Cons on buying a 2004 3 series convertible is it will obviously be sold for a higher price then then its 1999-2003 models. In 2004 the coupe and convertible had a facelift which included new headlights, new front wings and bumpers, new selections in exterior colors, and redesigned sidemarker lights and LED tail lights. Over all the more attractive of the 3 series convertibles would lie within the years 2004-2006 opposed to the 1999-2003 3 series convertible models, but in all "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Of course no one can denie that the 2007-2010 BMW 3 series covertibles are good looking but the MSRP price for a used or new 3 series is way beyond being comparable with 2004 models. Basically, I would take the 04. Hope this helps.

What do the suffixes on the Acura cars mean?

Jeremy

Like 3.5 RL, and 3.2 CL. I drive an RL and I always wondered what the last 2 letters stood for. My friend said RL=Royal Luxury, TL=True Luxury, CL=Contemporary Luxury. But IDK about my friends explanation.

Answer
They don't necessarily mean anything, but here are some ideas:

RL = Road Luxury / Replaces Legend. (Legend is an Acura model name in Japan) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acura_RL

TL = Touring Luxury (luxury touring car) / True Luxury

CL = Contemporary luxury / Coupe Luxury (luxury coupe)

I am in a despute with a friend about the cost of traveling to New Zealand. Can you do one month with $1,000?

Melissa B

I want to travel on a budget, but I still like to have some luxury. Is the dollar tiple and is it realitively cheap?

Answer
I live in NZ and our cash income is quite low, but we live well. If you avoid tourist traps like Rotorua, Queenstown and the ski places, you'll save a lot of money and you won't miss much. Some of our most interesting places you hardly ever read about in the tourist brochures. Like the Southern Scenic Route; the coastal route from Dunedin to Te Anau. The lesser-known walking tracks like the Whangapeka track, the Heaphy track and Stewart Island's walking tracks. But buy your supplies before arriving on Stewart Island; the local shops are expensive. Compared with most developed countries, NZ is a cheap place to live, provided you do your homework first and avoid ripoff places. Yes, you could have a good time here for $1000 for a month. Stay in backpackers, avoid the scenic rail trips, hitch hike, travel by bus or see if any rental cars need returning to other centres.

What's it like to live in New Zealand?

MUSASHI

I'm thinking about taking a vacation there. Is it expensive or cheaper compared to that of the US. I even hear some friends talking about moving there to work and live. Can anyone share some insight, please?

Answer
If you can get a cheapish airfare, you will find it a relatively cheap place to holiday as the US dollar is relatively strong. There are a wide range of options in terms of getting around (bus, rental car, camper van, guided tours etc.) and accommodation - really high end luxury hotels and camping grounds with cabins and shared kitchens so you can do your own cooking - and everything in between.
In terms of living here - I moved here from the US 12 years ago, and go home regularly. Rent and house prices are probably lower, cars and gas are more expensive. Food probably is about the same (some higher, some lower) Health care and education (tertiary) are cheaper. Clothes and shoes are more. Appliances, electronics and furniture are more. Unless you are going to the islands or Australia, it costs a lot to get anywhere.
In terms of moving here to work and live -
If you've got 10 million dollars to invest, you'll be welcomed with open arms. Otherwise, you'll need to meet the requirements in terms of education and skills, money to resettle and language etc.
It is wonderful lifestyle and a great place to raise a family. I have no desire to move back to the US.
You should definitely come for a holiday - have at least 3 weeks, pick one island (I'd say the South Island for sure) and rent a car so you have flexibility.

If you had a choice, would you buy a luxury car or a standard car for the same price?

luxury cars depreciation on Luxury Car
luxury cars depreciation image

s

How do you think depreciation effects the type of car purchased? Give a specific example.

Answer
the main reason ppl buy luxury cars, is to look classy and rich.
b/c when you think of BMW, you automatically think $$$.
so when you see someone driving a BMW, first thought that comes to mind is that, "man he/she must be rich!".
but if a luxury car, were the same price as a normal standard... there really wouldn't be a class system.
if you saw someone with a BMW, and the guy next to him had a Ford Focus, you wouldn't automatically think better of the BMW driver. cause essentially their both the same price.
and in the end, trying to buy that "fancy car", really means nothing, cause it's not more valueable than the avg. car.

Can I deduct a new car purchase for my business?

Kevin

My wife and I purchased a new car in 2006. The car is used for both personal use, and for use in my business. Can I deduct anything on my taxes in regards to the purchase of this car? Would I be listing the car as a business asset?

Answer
Yes, you can. However, the IRS only allows you to take pieces over time. You'll need to look into the instructions for depreciation or form 4562.

Most cars are subject to the luxury auto limits meaning there is a cap as to how much you can deduct as depreciation expense each year. For someone that has never dealt with this before, it can seem very complicated. Now might be a good time to hire a CPA to handle your return. Part of the cost (for the CPA) is also deductible as a business expense!

Liam

Hi guys, as a car fan, I was wondering, what are your opinions on the best sports cars under $50,000 dollars USD
When it comes to mind, I think of ;

Subaru WRX sti
Mitsubishi Lancer EVO
and the Volkswagen GTI

I know there are a few others, but what are they?
Rank your top 2 favourite, and (if possible) give horsepower/torque, price, 0-60 times, etc.

Thanks, Liam :)
If not sports cars, what (really) can you classify them as>?

Answer
Depends on what your definition of sports car is. Everyone has their own criteria for what a sports car should be.
Some say a sports car should be small, low, and a 2-seater only; like the Miata or Vette. I happen to like both. But I need a car that can transport bikes and kayaks too.
I compared many sporty cars; Mazdaspeed 3, Mini Cooper, Civic Si, VW GTI. It was not easy choosing, because all the above are great cars.
However, I finally selected the GTI. Its a sports car by my definition; really sticks the curves [without ride harshness] , has the HP I crave, gets 30+ MPG , and can car-top my bikes and kayaks. A perfectly practical sports car. Love it!
BTW, Consumer Reports Magazine agrees with me. The April 2010 issue rates the GTI as their Top Pick in the Sports Car Category.
If you rate sports cars just by 0-60 acceleration, the li'l GTI falls short . Its time is 6.3. The EVO does 5.3. WRX in 5.0!! However, the GTI costs just $23k whereas the other two are $40k! Really, the GTI should not be compared to the EV0 & WRX. Way different categories.
HP, torque in GTI is 200/207. EVO is 291/300. WRX is 305/290.
Nice to meet another that appreciates driving and has my tastes in autos! Hope this info helps you...

Is the 2002 Mercedes S430 a good car?

Vinerider

It seems like you can pick up used Mercedes 2002 S430's for under $30,000. Based on driving the car and feeling the amenities, it seems like a heck of a deal. Is there something I am missing? Is it a bad car overall? Is maintenance a big problem? At what point does the car experience issues? 50k miles? 75k miles? 100k miles? Seems like a ton of car for the price vs a high end Pre-owned Lexus or Infiniti. Thoughts?

Answer
It should be a good car. The reason why they are such a steal is that the maintenance costs are going to be significantly higher than almost any other brand of car out there. You can expect to pay roughly $65 or higher just for an oil change, and about $300 or higher just for an "A service", which is just a minor tune-up.

Before you go out and purchase a Mercedes-Benz that's out of warranty, look around for an independent service shop. Make sure they specialize in Mercedes, (or German) vehicles. A bonus would be if their mechanics were MB certified.

Here's a good example of why independent repair facilities are worth their weight in gold;

I have a 2002 S600 Sport with about 66,000 miles on it, (picked it up just under 2 years ago with about 10K miles left on warranty). Anyways, last week I was due for a transmission/differential service. My local dealership quoted me about $600 for it. The local shop around the corner, $240. This is just one example, and I'm sure many other MB owners could relate a story of their own.

If you're willing to take care of the maintenance religiously, regardless of cost, the car will run forever. It's not uncommon for MB cars that are well maintained to run well past 500K miles. MB even has a mileage award program that even has a top awar of 1 million miles, and yes it has been awarded.

Good luck on your search! And if you do purchase a Mercedes Benz, welcome to the family.

Why cant the 'black church" help the communities in which they are located?

Slippery(O

There are so many black churches in the black community. And yet the black communities are in poverty and full of blight and crime. So why cant the black leaders and members just help the communities around them, and not just help themselves only?

BTW: I know all communities aren't like this, but most of them are. Take Detroit,Chicago and Atlanta for example.

Answer
My church from back at home does. They offer free tutoring and social programs for the children.

But I agree with you that too many of the Black churches, atleast the "mega" Black churches, don't do enough, if anything, for the Black community. A lot of the pastors and ministers are greedy and they only cater to their self-serving agenda. I have been to a "mega" Black church that had several offerings and the pastor justified it by saying that "We don't serve no broke God". All of the money that they allocate from this hustle is only used to finance their luxury cars, vacations, and numerous homes.

Btw, the mega church that I attended was in Baltimore.

Mega churches can do a helluva lot more. They have the money and resources to do so, but like I stated, the pastors are greedy and only serve themselves.

I'm in the usa and unemployed. I would like to work temp in Queensland Australia. How can I find a job there?

SK3

I have a recreation and leisure studies BS degree. I'm unemployed in the usa. I would like to travel to AU and work there temp on a work visa. I will not be able to drive in au (because of the wrong side of the road driving).

How can I find a job there? I would like to be near the Southern Brisbane area if possible. Thanks.

Answer
If you can get a work permit there are theme parks south of Brisbane on the Gold Coast. That might suit your degree.

http://www.themeparksgoldcoast.com.au/content/tpgc_home_v2.asp?

http://www.tourismgoldcoast.com/tours_themeparks.html

There are also plenty of hotels and other tourist stuff ranging from luxury to camping and hiking facilities in the country just inland.

I have not tried driving on the right, but according to a friend of mine it is not difficult, he hired a car in Atlanta and drove to New York via inland states. No problem. So driving on the left might not be a problem for you. I would not try it on the highway from the Gold Coast to Brisbane first though.

Road signs are similar to those in the USA and the UK.

when you borrow from your home equity line, how does the payment system work versus a typical loan?

jfunk

my wonderful parents are lending me money to buy a new car, and they plan on borrowing the money from our home equity line. they said the interest rate is much lower, but my mom wasnt sure if they charged interest every year like a normal car loan or if it was ultimately much cheaper. anyone know? first good answer by sunday gets the ten.

Answer
Home equity loans are typically junior loans and should not be confused with a basic refinance, which means paying off an existing mortgage and replacing it with another loan. Refinances can take 30 days or more to process. Home equity loans fund fairly quickly and are subordinate to an existing first mortgage. In other words, an equity loan falls into second position.
The lender's security for the loan is your home, meaning if you go into default and do not make your mortgage payments or otherwise abide by the terms of the loan, the lender has the right to foreclose. In many states, like California, if a homeowner stops paying the first lender, to protect its security, the second-position lender can step in, make up the payments to the first lender and begin its own foreclosure proceedings. All of which means your home is at risk when you take out a home equity loan.

Bridge Loans

Bridge loans are used by sellers who want to buy a new home before selling an existing home but need the cash from the existing home. You will see bridge loans used more often in seller's markets than in buyer's markets. Common terms for a bridge loan are:

Loan amounts up to 80% of market value
Higher loan costs such as points or admin fees
No payments for 3 to 4 months
Right to renegotiate loan terms if home does not sell within loan term
Some lenders demand the borrower obtain the financing for their new home from the lender making the bridge loan
Home Equity Loans

Borrowers cannot obtain equity loans in all 50 states. Equity loans can be used toward the purchase price of a new home but the lender will not make the loan if your home is on the market. This is the main reason many sellers obtain bridge loans instead. But since costs are higher with a bridge loan, it makes more sense to get an equity loan if you can plan far enough in advance.

Borrowers also obtain home equity loans to pay for home improvements / remodeling, college education or medical expenses. Because interest is tax deductible on a home equity loan, many homeowners choose to borrow against a residence to buy consumer goods. They reason that if they finance consumer goods by obtaining an unsecured loan or putting the purchase on a credit card, they cannot deduct the interest, but they often do not stop to consider whether the item is really a necessity. It is not a good idea to borrow against your home to purchase luxuries such as motor homes, ski boats or vacations, but people do it. Advantages to a home equity loan are:

Typically, fixed rate of interest
Borrow 100% of equity or more
Amortized payments
Longer loan terms such as 3, 5, 7, 10 or 15 years.
Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)

Borrowers can take out a home equity line of credit and never repay a dime. That's because a HELOC is a line of credit, meaning if you never actually take any of the money available, you won't ever need to pay it back. It's available by writing a check for more than you have in your account or by making withdrawals against a specific account at your lending institution.

Some of the characteristics inherent with a HELOC are:

Generally, an adjustable-rate loan
Once the money has been repaid, you can borrow it again
Flexible payment terms, sometimes as low as 1% of your loan balance
Note: The time to apply for a HELOC is when you don't need it. It's credit that will be available to you should you ever need to draw on it, whether you are subsequently unemployed or facing an immediate financial emergency.

What is high mileage for an used motorcycle?

sports cars under 70k image

alejo.rock

Cars are high 100,000+ what about motorcycles? 33,000 a lot?

Answer
A Japanese water-cooled motorcycle, the engine is just as reliable and long-lived as a Japanese car. 100k miles is just properly broken in. 8^)

Air-cooled bikes don't last as long because the engine operates under a wider range of temperatures, but even a modern air-cooled bike should last 75-100k miles, then need new rings, maybe new valves, and be ready to go another 75k miles. I have a 1978 BMW that I ride almost every day. It's got 70k miles on it, and it's gone through one set of rings, but still has the original valves, and the original clutch.

But in the real world, it depends on how the bike's been taken care of. The really super sport bikes (GSX-R, CBR, R1/R6, etc.) have a narrow power band up near the redline, and a really 'enthusiastic' rider can thrash one of these in 30k miles. Things like oil changes and valve adjustments are really crucial. Also, many bikes tend to just sit in a garage for several years, and there are things that wear out faster on a bike if it's -not- ridden.

Normally you should never be afraid of a bike with 33,000 miles on it. But you have to look at the previous owner and make a judgement as too whether he cared for the bike properly.

Porsche cayenne or BMW x6 or a sports coupe like an Aston Martin db9 or Audi r8.Any ideas?

rohit

I'm looking for my first car and I have budget of 50-70k. I'm not sure whether to go for a new suv like a Porsche cayenne or BMW x6 or a sports coupe like an Aston Martin db9 or Audi r8.Any ideas?

Answer
FIrst of all, if you did your research, you will have found that it is very unlikely to find a DB9 or R8 in existence for under 70K. If you do happen to find one in that price range, you should be extremely wary. Used exotics have a reputation for poor reliability and high maintenance costs. Cars that are more likely to be found in the 50-70K price range would be a used: Ferrari 360, AM V8 Vantage, Mercedes SL, Maserati Quattroporte or Bentley Continental GT, new: BMW M3, Audi S5 or a Porsche Cayman.

Secondly, what type of car you need depends on your lifestyle. If you have kids, or haul around lots of things get the X6. The the new generation Porsche Cayenne has just been introduced and won't be on sale for another couple of months, making any Cayenne you may buy right now old news. If you don't really care about that, great job, you probably saved yourself a lot of money off the MSRP as dealers are trying to make room in their lots for the newer cars. I personally would never get a car that's just been replaced by a newer generation.

The X6 is a great car. I think it looks very nice (contrary to the opinions of many other people) and it drives like a sedan. An even more practical car would be the X5, as the X6 is short on rear headroom, seats only four and has a smaller trunk. However, the X6 is much better to drive. I've driven an X5 xDrive35i and it felt sluggish.

The Mercedes ML 550 is aging, but it is a very great car to own and drive. I have a ML 500 and I can tell you it is a great car to drive and very practical for many things. However a replacement is due in 1-2 years.

What kind of car you should get is entirely up to you.

Why do economy cars get better gas mileage then luxury cars?

luxury cars that are good on gas on top 10 fuel efficient luxury cars cars com luxury cars
luxury cars that are good on gas image

Code Brown

I am doing a project for my business stat class. My group is doing research on gas mileage of cars and found out that on average economy cars get better gas mileage than luxury cars. and we were wondering why this would be. I have been doing online research and haven't been able to find out why this is; I am hoping some one here could help me out.

Answer
Economy cars are usually much lighter and have smaller engines than luxury cars.

Here is a perfect example

A 2009 Lexus LS430 has a 4.6 liter V8 engine and weighs 4244lbs. It gets 16mpg city/24mpg highway.

A 2009 Toyota Avalon (which the Lexus LS430 is based off of) has a 3.5 liter V6 and weighs 3490lbs. It gets 19mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Luxury cars are expected to be much smoother and quieter than some cheaper cars. To do that, the additional sound deadning materials and techniques require the car be heavier. Luxury cars are also expected to be a little faster than economy cars therefore a larger more powerful motor is needed.

What luxury cars get great gas mileage?

Ara

Looking for 2010, 2011 or 2012 luxury car for around 30,000 with close to 40 mpg. My wife and I don't want to settle for a Prius or Civic, but we do want good MPG because we drive so much. Is this possible without spending too much more?

Answer
If you take a closer look at the Prius, you'll see that you aren't "settling". It has many of features only found in luxury cars. It's a mid-sized car, not a compact like the Civic, so room is not a problem.

Note that decent luxury cars start at about $45,000.

My 2004 Prius has cost 12 cents per mile for dealer maintenance, tires, and fuel combined over the 120,000 trouble-free miles I've driven it so far.

My 2004 Prius MPG from the logbook. (Complete years only):
2003-2004 -- 50.8 mpg 17,628 miles
2005 -- 52.6 mpg 14,688 miles
2006 -- 56.3 mpg 16174 miles
2007 -- 57.3 mpg 18384 miles
2008 -- 59.9 mpg 21755 miles
2009 -- 61.4 mpg 16177 miles
2010 -- 65.2 mpg 12134 miles
