what is the safest sports car under 30,000?

mrunsheila

Im looking at the pontiac, solstice or the saturn, sky? Which one is safer. Any suggestions?

Answer
The Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are identical under the sheetmetal. Saturn is moving up-market, so the Sky is more expensive. Those are the only two differences. Neither is particularly safe, being small convertibles. You really don't have too many options for pure sports cars under $30,000. The Mazda MX-5 is also a logical alternative and is very similar to the Solstice/Sky twins in nearly every category. It was listed among Forbes' top 21 safest cars. The Honda Civic Si is also listed among Forbes' top 21 safest cars, and it is fairly quick.

what sport car should I buy under 30,000 $

krishneel

Should I buy the dodge neon srt 4,ford mustang 2002-2008,or the Subaru wrx and why should I buy this car

Answer
MazdaSpeed 3 - Best car for the money in that class (starts at $23,300).

1) Will beat a WRX in the quarter mile, heads up, for less coin.
2) Cheaper to insure and more reliable than an SRT-4.
3) Holds its value better than any Mustang.
4) Consumer Reports named it the #1 overall sporty car for 2008.
5) Only 12,000 shipped to the US over 2 model years, so you won't have something that everyone else has.

Is a grand prix considered a sports car?

Linda

Answer
No, the Pontiac Grand Prix was never a sports car. At best, the early models from the 1960's and 1970's was a luxury touring coupe, and the most recent models were just a fancy trim package on the basic mid-sized Pontiac sedan.

Is the 1999 Viper a muscle car?

RX7 DRIFTE

Yes we all know it's a sports car. Alot of sports car fall under the muscle car category and vice versa. And if it isn't a Muscle car and rather a Super car or exotic car of that time then wouldn't that mean the 1999 Saleen Mustang S351 is a car of that class. This Mustang is superior to the Viper GTS.
Viper GTS
Hp: 460
Torque: 490
0-60mph: 4.6 seconds
Top Speed 185 mph

Saleen S351:
Hp: 495
Torque: 490
0-60mph: 4.4 seconds
Top Speed: 190 mph

Answer
Bobby Jim nailed it. Neither are muscle cars.

Muscle cars were mid-size vehicles from the 1960's with large displacement engines. The Pontiac GTO is a prime example.

The Mustang was a "Pony Car." Long nose, short deck, small to medium sized. Other examples are the GM F-bodies and the Plymouth Barracuda.

Are 2011 mazda 3 i sports reliable cars?

im looking to buy a 2011 mazda 3 i sport. every one i talk to says its a bad idea. they are un reliable and engine and transmission are rubish and it will be spend most of its time in the shop is this true?

Answer
I'm not sure who "everyone" is but you may want to pick up some reading material. Most car magazines rate the Mazda 3 a VERY reliable car and rave over the engine, transmission and how much fun the car is to drive. I own a 2010 Mazda 3 Touring sedan and the car has had NO problems and I'm very happy with the car. I think it was Car and Driver who had a 6 car shoot out with the Mazda 3, Chevy Cruise, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and the Hyundai Elantra
and the Mazda came in a very close second.

2011 Entry Level Sports Cars?

Q. Ok guys,

I'm planning on getting a new car this summer, and have about at $25,000 budget. I want something fun to drive, and have been researching cars for months.

I have narrowed it don to...

2011 VW GTI
Pros: Great handling, very nice interior, hatchback for carrying gear
Cons: VW's questionable reliability

2011 Mustang V6
Pros: 305hp engine, good value
Cons: Automatic a bit doggy (3.31 ratio and manual should mend), feels "big"

2011 Genesis Coupe 2.0T
Pros: Outstanding exterior looks, 2.0t very peppy with good exhaust note
Cons: Interior a bit cheap

I am an extremely indecisive person, so I was looking for some more opinions about which car you would get.
If you were to get one of these cars, which one and why?
Any other cars you would recommend?

Thanks for your response!
Also forgot about the Mazdaspeed 3
Pros: 263hp, and absolute bargain for the price
Cons: Love-it-or-hate-it styling, torque steer problem (to be expected)

Answer
I guess for the Price, Fuel Efficiency, Power, And Maintenance fees...You can't go wrong with the Genesis. My buddy has the 2.0 and he loves it. Handles well in snow too.
Hyundai has really came along way recently from making terrible cars to what they are today.

What type of car should I get?

Adam

My 2008 Subaru Legacy was in an accident yesterday. Though I have yet to hear whether it's totalled or not, I'm assuming it is, as the side, and curtain airbags deployed, and the B-Pillar was pretty bent. I was rather lucky to walk out with only a few scratches and bruises (I was T-Boned by a 2001 Toyota Sequoia).

Anyway, I am probably going to be in the market for a new car, and I have no clue where to start. Here's my criteria:

- Under $21,000
- New or used (I don't care - if used under 60,000 miles though, and newer than an 06)
- AWD is preferable, but I can live without (I live in Connecticut where there can be quite a lot of snow)
- Sedan/Coupe/Hatchback - no SUV's
- Something relatively sporty. Though my Subaru was family sedan, it was moderately sporty.
- It needs to be available in a manual.
- I don't need a large car. It's usually just me, or a few friends. I'm not looking to go any larger than my Legacy.
- I don't want a car that's a dime a dozen (Camry, Corolla, Accord, Etc).

As of now, I've found a few cars that are worth a look. This is what I've found.

2008 Acura TSX
2007 Acura TL
2007 BMW 328xi
2007 Infiniti G35x
2007 Mazda Speed6
2010 Suzuki Kizashi
2008 Subaru Legacy GT (I found one that's a manual for $20,000 with 78,000 Miles)

As of now, I find the Kizashi to be appealing, as it's not common, it comes in AWD, and it's good looking. However, I'm a little apprehensive to be buying from such a small brand that may not be around in the US in a few years.

Do you have any cars to add to the list, or any recommendations to make?

Thanks

Answer
The only true performance sport cars listed above are the BMW 328xi and the Infiniti G35x. Both BMW and Infiniti are the class leaders when it comes to standard performance, the Infiniti G35 and BMW 3 series out perform their competitors like the Mercedes C-class, Audi A4 and Lexus IS. The 328xi is a great car and although it may not be as fast as the Infiniti it attains what the industry knows to be one of the best performance cars on the market. Infiniti & BMW are both known to have the best overall driving dynamics in the luxury market. The G35 is much more powerful with a 3.5 liter V6 producing a potent 306 Horsepower while the BMW 328xi composes a 3.0 liter V6 emitting an adequate 230 HP. Infiniti and BMW are the best performers on each side of the spectrum, BMW is the best performing German brand while the Infiniti is the best performing Japanese brand. In terms of reliability the Infiniti or any Japanese brand for that fact will be more reliable then the Germans however BMW has improved over the years and although they are more demanding to upkeep they are great cars to own if you maintain them to their appropriate standards. However I see you have more alternatives out side the luxury segment which makes me wonder..... you are more then likely focused on reliability, affordability & practicality. You can always try the Subaru which is a great car too, if you want a more premium feel but at the same time an affordable sports car you can always opt for the Acura TSX or TL. It may not be as good the BMW or the Infiniti in terms of brand prestige and over all performance but the Acura TSX & TL are great cars, they are affordable, cheap to maintain and very reliable. By the way just a tad bit more of information, I see that your price range is below $21,000..... you do realize that you can get an even newer vehicle for the price range your in, have not checked the 2008 G35, 2009 BMW 328i or even the 2009 Audi A4?? You can easily find them for under 21K with a clean title and low mileage.

Help deciding on which car to buy?

Katie B

Hello, I am trying to buy a new car, I'm almost 21 and this will be my first car (sad I know) but I have been saving up because I didn't want my parents to have to pay for my car.

So my dad and I are debating what car to get,
There is this 2003 infiniti fx35 which is what I want, and I am in love with it, it has 93,000 one trusted owner who traded it in for a newer infiniti and has all the records of maintenance. the price on this car is 15,000 because we know the dealer

And my dad is in love with the Honda CR-V's which I honestly cant stand, given this is important since I'll be the one driving it. But he will be helping me with the payments and it'll be like a family car. Anyways the Honda has 120,000 miles on it, and is a 2007. the price is 14,000 or 13,500 at least.

Although I know Honda's are 4cy and infinit is 6cy, and infiniti will probably be more expensive to insure but we could put the insurance under my dad's name, even tho I have a very clean record ( well I don't have a car, no wonder why my record is very clean)

So what are you guys' thoughts on this. any recommendation would be helpful,

Thank you
Which one is more reliable?

Answer
For the most part an Infiniti will retain its residual value much higher compared to a Honda over time hence the reason why a 2003 model is selling for $15K. In terms of reliability, Infiniti & Honda are both reliable manufacturers however they both compete in two entirely different segments. The Infiniti FX35 was the first luxury coupe-like-SUV of its kind which reinvented the word "crossover" for many years to come. After the birth year of the Infiniti FX there later rippled the creation of the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X6 & Acura ZDX. Over all an Infiniti is far more superior then a Honda, the driving dynamics of an Infiniti are far more engaging and involving to drive. Performance wise, the FX35 composed a 3.5 Liter V6 rated at 280 horsepower while the 2007 Honda CR-V composes a 2.4-liter 4 cylinder engine rated at 166 horsepower. The FX35 is a great luxury SUV however it is the least bit economical, in terms of MPG the FX35 is the epitome of a gas guzzler rated at an estimated 15 City and 22 Highway, but then again with performance what else can you expect? When its comes to performance the Infiniti has always been the best peforming luxury sports car next to the BMW in the luxury segment. Infiniti is essentially the Japanese BMW the same way Lexus is like the Japanese Mercedes. The FX35 simply has more character and poise, then again it is a luxury SUV so its not a very fair comparison next to the Honda CR-V. The CR-V is a great car, its economical and in retrospect much cheaper to maintain then an Infiniti. Honestly as much as I love the Infiniti, if this is your first car I would recommend a cheap reliable and affordable SUV. An Infiniti will have higher repair cost and maintenance cost while the CR-V demands very little. The CR-V is more practical and its a great first car. My point is both SUV's are targeted to two entirely different drivers with different expectations. If you truely want a luxury car why dont you get a 2004-2006 Infiniti G35 sedan/coupe, they are better on gas and just as fun to drive.

Examples:
2005 Infiniti G35 sedan: 78K miles, $14,560

BMW 330ci sport package??

Jake

How do I tell if my 2001 330ci is a sport package or any other package they offered?

Answer
Sports packaged cars have
1. 17" wheels and the car is lower to the ground than a standard car
2. Bolstered seats w/ thigh support (multi-adjustable sport seats)
3. Performance tires,
4. Stiffer suspension tuning
5. 3-Spoke steering wheel w/ controls.

and if you end up getting the car, welcome to the E46 community! haha You should join www.e46fanatics.com should you have any other questions, problems, advice, etc.
good luck with whatever you decide!

In response to Snowie, actually my 328ci sits on stock 15" directly from the dealership. So that completely debunks your statement, "328ci can't sit on 15" because their brakes are too big."

The only brakes that are "too big" for the stock setup would be from aftermarket brakes, and it wouldn't be the brakes alone, it'd actually be the rotors + calipers.

My current setup with my M has a Big Brake kit from StopTech 380mm (15" diameter rotor), which required me to upgrade my wheel and rim size, because my stock wheels were too small to wrap around the new rotors. the only size rotors you can wrap STOCK M3 rims/wheels are the 13" Rotors and you'd have to buy 3mm spacers along with that kit.

help--Car seat??

Momma_of_2

I would like to buy the eddie bauer 3-in-1 car seat for my car. But I don't know If it will fit. I have a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta and I can not seem to fit any place ONLINE OR IN TOWN to check. (b4 I buy it) I live in a very small town, we don't even have a Wal-mart ( 75 miles away). Any info as to where I can find Info would be great!!! THANKS!!!

Answer
Run as far as you can AWAY from the Eddie Bauer 3-in-1, Cosco Alpha Omega, and all the other clones of the same seat. (Cosco/Eddie Bauer/Dorel/Safety1st all the same company, just different covers on the seats). Not a good seat - it is NOT the only car seat you will ever need, it is usually outgrown before a child reaches 3 years old, and then you have to buy another one. Fit in your car actually would be the only thing about the seat I wouldn't worry about. You do need to check and see if your car has ELR seatbelts, switchable retractor (ALR/ELR) seatbelts, or seatbelts with locking latchplates. It makes a difference in the seat you purchase. If your car does not have seat belts that lock (either switchable or locking latchplat) I would get the Marathon - its the only one with built-in locking clips so you don't have to use one of those pain in the rear locking clips that come separate. They're awful!

When getting a convertible seat, you want 3 things:
1)high rear facing limit - all go to at least 30lbs, but many go higher
2)high forward facing limit - all go to at least 40lbs, but many go higher
3)tall top harness slots - so it fits older kids, and low bottom slots if you need it to fit a newborn
The 3-in-1/Alpha Omega fails the on the last 2 - low top harness slots and low forward facing limit.

Remember these rules:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)Children should stay rear facing AS LNOG AS POSSIBLE!!!! The 20lbs/1 year rule is outdated and provides a bare minimum for turning kids forward facing. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration both recommend keeping kids rear facing as long as possible, up to the limits of their seat, preferably until at least 2 years of age. For good reason: A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone. In other countries, rear facing 2 - 3 - 4 year olds is standard, they understand that its safer. Here, we turn them as soon as we get to, seeing it as a right of passage thing or something. Ridiculous. Most convertible seats have a 30lbs rear facing limit, Cosco/Dorel/Safety1st/Eddie Bauer seats rear face to 35lbs, Britax rear faces to 33lbs.
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and weight - 40" tall and weighs 41lbs. He outgrew the 40lbs seats shortly after his 2nd birthday. It was a total waste of money. He now has a Britax Marathon, which goes to 65lbs, and will be able to fit it for some time yet. If I'd have bought it when he was born, I could have had one car seat this whole time instead of the 3 I wasted money on. They are more expensive for many reasons, this is one.

So...knowing all that, here's some about specific seats. Please don't get a Graco Comfort Sport. Car seat techs call it the 'crappysport'. LOL Its a crappy seat that won't last your child very long b/c it has a really short shell. The straps twist all the time, and if they're twisted they won't support your child in a wreck properly. They're hard to install. There's nothing good about these seats except perhaps they're cheap sometimes. Ditto the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It's one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

The Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe Convertible seat is great, it is made by Britax, without all the frills. It's the same shell as a Marathon, but for less than half the price. $130 at Albee Baby online with free shipping, or at their eBay name, babysurplus. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward to 55lbs. Easy to use, fits in most cars.

These are the best you can buy that will give you the most bang for your buck. As a single parent I'm always watching the budget - I have no money to speak of, and these are what I would buy. (My son has a marathon and is soon getting a Britax Regent). They will last the longest. I only wish someone would've told me all this before I had him, I coulda saved some money for the extra seats I started out with!

All seats in the US must meet the same safety criteria to sell, so technically they all are safe, however, if its hard to install, then it won't be used correctly and that makes it unsafe. Also, they only must meet the guidelines, some seats barely pass, some exceed them. Britax exceeds the guidelines and is easy to use.

Help with my first car!!!!?

ashley_pro

My first car will be used, so because of that I want to know if I should just get a used luxury car. I'm 22, have a nice job, nice place to live, and I want a car to be nice as well and something that I want to drive for years to come. I know this may sound snotty and snobby, but I just don't want a mazda, KIA, Chevy sedan, etc... I want luxury, but for my first car is that a smart decision? Is upkeep going to kick my butt?

Answer
If you have the money to buy a used luxury car you are better off in the long run, if you get a good one. The upkeep on some luxury cars is lower. Deciding whether a given car is a good one and if the maintenance costs will be lower is beyond my capability and yours. You need an auto mechanic you can trust. Make an appointment for a test drive and a vehicle inspection at the same time. During the test drive take the car to the shop and have them inspect it. You will have to pay for the inspections, but this is cheaper than paying for a lemon.

How much does car insurance cost in a month?

Pavel_B

How much does car insurance cost for inexperienced driver? I'll be a newcomer in Winnipeg. I'd like to buy used car to drive to college. Can I buy a car and get a drivers license with a student visa?
Thank you.

Answer
Vehicles tend to be a very expensive luxury in Canada, something that if you can do without, you will save a lot of money.

First there is the cost of the car. Expect to pay at least $5000 for something that will work reliably in Canada's climate. Winnipeg is not a place you want to be with a car that decides it won't start on cold winter mornings or nights.

Next there is the gas. Manitoba gas prices are currently hovering around $1.22 per litre. That's actually lower than the Canadian average (I paid $1.41 this morning in Quebec) but still not something that a college student can really afford to pay unless they need the car to get to work as well as school.

Then there are the added costs of license and registration. Manitoba has an interesting scaled method of calculating what you pay. You start at zero (0) and for each year of safe driving, you get +1. For each year of bad driving you get -1. Your driving fees depend on what your current rating is. For example, no rating and no demerit points? You pay $65 for your license. Not sure how much vehicle registration and a license plate will cost you (looks like $100). And you have to get the vehicle inspected to make sure it is roadworthy and emissions are ok ($55 charge).

Finally, we get to insurance. Everyone is expected to get insurance, and basic coverage is given by AUTOPAC. But there is also optional coverage, so you can get more coverage or different coverage depending on your needs. Basic coverage looks like it is $500 per year.

So all this money going out to get you transportation. And we still have not looked at any possible maintenance costs, parking lot payments, breakdowns and costly towing and garage fees.

As a student, you probably want to look at the Winnipeg public transit. You get a reduced fare by being a student, don't have to worry about finding parking near the school, and all the money you save will pay for the public transit monthly passes.

You can still get a Manitoba license, so that if you want to be able to RENT a car and use it to go out of town for some holiday or downtime, you can. But it's all up to you.

Best used sports/performance car for $15k or less?

Q. I looking for a newer 1997+ sportier car with around 50k miles or less. Somewhere in the price range of $15k-$17k or less. Something reliable, decently quick, fun, and good looks.

I dont really want old early 90's unreliable cars such as old 300zxs, 3000gts, stealth tt's etc, since thats what I have now (1991, 300zx tt, 90k miles)

But have looked at things like rx-8, boxster (worried about costs of maintenance), c230 kompressor, eclipses, trans am, camaro, srt-4, etc.

Any ideas or suggestions?
autoinspector: as in reliable I mean not going to be broke down every weekend. I dont mean a honda civic where it will drive til 300k miles. I realize sports cars are more expensive to maintain but I just dont want something that will be at the shop every other day.

Answer
Your price range is kind of tough for a performance oriented car.

I personally prefer a RWD performance car due to the usually more progressive neutral handling characteristics.

I dislike domestic cars, but the car that fits the bill most is a 1997 C5 Corvette. Simple OHV V8, no turbos or all wheel drive, yet it's still a world class performer. It will also hold its remaining value better than any other V8 american coupe. Road & Track just had an article on the C5 generation as a used car classic. It had some tips from experts that stated Corvettes or either babied or abused; that there really is no in between due to the more blue collar type buyers.

But I myself would prefer a Mazdaspeed Miata, with hardtop of course.

For FWD I really like the Acura CL Type-S w/6speed manual (the auto trans had a recall). This car will easily have the best fit and finish, along with the classiest interior and best ride. They're also quick with a 260hp+ SOHC VTEC engine. I had an automatic 2001 model and with an intake it sounded like a racecar when VTEC was engaged. They also make a 4 door Type-S as the TL, is has a less round look to it.

Most reliable car over 50K?

...

My dad is looking for a new car to buy since he's had his old one for about ten years now. Other than BMW and Mercedes, what other car companies have good cars and are reliable such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Maserati, etc.? The car is gonna be a daily driver so what car around 50K would be best for him? Thanks

Answer
Depends what he's looking for in a car.

The luxury sedans are all nice at around that price.

Or he could buy a sports car.

You didn't actually mention any cars, all you mentioned were Makes.

I am just wondering what is a nice sports car to buy under $10k?

Peter

Year between 99' to 2010 is best, any brand is okay too, best bang for the buck!

Answer
One of my favorites is a 2003 acura cl type s 6speed. Acura only made this two door version of the tl for a few years. 260hp this car is fast. Bose sound system, 3.2l v-6 They go for anywhere from 6 to 10 grand. That car is defiantly in my top ten favorite cars.

Sports car for Under 9000?

Luke T

I live in the us and am looking for for a cheap reliable sports car. Any ideas?

Answer
Might be able to find a 300 ZX in that range, but its unlikely.
Should be able to find a 3000 GT or Dodge Stealth.
Should look at American Muscle (Camaro, Firebird/Trans-Am, Mustang).
Older Supras.
Toyota MR2, great little mid-engine RWD car.

Recommend me a under $9000 sports/muscle car, used?

MrNobody

And say why.

Answer
05 Mustang in Red (with black soft top) is a great idea. Very strong car and hot.

Acura RSX 2004 or a Type-S between 2002-2006 is a really good idea. You'll probably have to settle for something before 2005 if you want one with low clicks, but anything is possible. Rsx is a sick car pulls hard and is the ideal manly sports car, I like it in grey.

Toyota Celica is also a good option and with 9 grand you can easily get a '03-'05 in black and go ahead with tinting the windows and whatnot to make it look very nice.

Hyundai Tiburon after 2008 looks very sick and sort of looks like a smaller Hyundai Genesis, but you'd be lucky to get it for nine grand. It's still worth a try to look.

You could also go with a Honda civic coupe '05 or '06 depending on which generation fits your style better. These cars are dirt cheap compared to the rest and aren't exactly eye-popping until, ofcourse, you modify the **** out of it. These cars are some of the easiest to modify, and some tints/rims/and projector headlights will make them look AMAZING without needing to spend another 1k on a body kit (even though that's also a good idea).

You can go for a Mitsubishi Eclipse from 2006 and up, these might be a little more than what you have but a good deal could result in a '06 eclipse for 8-9 grand.

You can take a look at a Infinity G35 coupe that has been tastefully modified and pick out one of those if you want too, however it could be a little much.

The NUMBER ONE CAR TO GET FOR YOU IS: Nissan 350z. It's a 12k+ car but now that it's getting colder you can probably pick one up for under 10k. It's by far the best car to get IF you can find one at your price range. I've personally seen 2-3 being sold for under 10k and was shocked, these are amazing cars and should be your #1 choice if you find one cheap enough.

Examples of a luxury or sports car?

Bobby Sue

In my class, we have to do a PowerPoint on a smart car that we invent (such as a car that can turn into a submarine and futuristic things like that), and try to "sell" it to our classmates. We are going to make ours either a fancy, expensive luxury car, or a powerful sports car. We also have to design and draw that car, so I was hoping that you could link me some pictures of each of the two kinds, luxury and sport cars? I just need some ideas for designing our futuristic car.

Also, if you have an idea on which type (luxury or sports) we should pick to better "sell" our car to the class, it would be greatly appreciated. (and tell why you chose it)
These are a few of the reasonable ideas we've come up with so far:
---Being able to change the color of the outside of the car with the push of a button
---Setting username profiles to automatically set the seats, mirrors, and temperature to your specific needs
---fingerprint scanner instead of keys
---Temperature detecter to automatically set heater/air conditioning based on the temperature outside
---a breathalyzer of sorts that senses if your drunk, and won't let the car turn on if you're drunk
---color-changing headlights
And then we'll include some ordinary features, like On-Star, built in GPS, MP3 player accessible, 6-CD changer, etc.

Anymore ideas you can think of, without getting too unrealistic?
Which type of car we should make it?
and include some pictures of sports cars and luxury cars, please.

Thanks so much! :D

Answer
Porsche is consistently rated the highest quality luxury sports car by J.D. Power and Associates.

Other Luxury Sports cars are:
BMW 6 series, M series, Z series
Mercedes AMG series, SL class, SLK class, CLK class, SLS class, Mclaren.
Audi S line, RS line, TT line
Infiniti G35 and G37
Lexus IS-F and LS-F and LF-A and IS300
Acura NSX
All Aston Martins and Lamrboghini's and Ferrari's that are not race editions.
All Porsche's that are not race editions. (Ex. GT2 and GT3 and Cayman R and Boxster Spyder)

And many more.

Just search these cars in Yahoo Images for an unlimited number of photos.

All of the technology ideas you mentioned are already in use in cars except for the first and third idea you mentioned.

But how about a real mini freezer. Many cars have little chill stations or ice boxes, but nothing that really cools your drink or food. Maybe with an ice dispenser and water dispenser like a small fountain to fill your cup.

What are some current popular sports cars that young guys like?

Eric

I'm thinking about getting my son a car for his 21st birthday. I know he likes sports cars but I don't know which companies/makes. I also don't want to ask him since I want it to be a surprise.

Can you please give me some suggestions?

Thanks

Answer
depends.. there are two groups of guys. Theres the "tuner" guys that like hondas and japanese cars and then theres the more muscle car types

I think you couldn't go wrong with a Nissan 350 Z either way.. IF you know for sure he's more of an american guy person then a Mustang GT or the New Dodge Challenger.

You can google all these cars to see pictures and find prices, etc.

Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

Rosie posi

Hey guys and gals,
I am trying to learn more about cars. And lets just say, I know next to nothing. I have learned a bit by surfing the web, but there is still a ton of information I would like to learn. Anyway, any information you could give me on the cars and what not would be awesome. and remember, I know next to nothing, so you may have to explain what "torque" and so forth means before you use it. Thanks a ton! You guys are the best!

Tell me a bit about this cars? What is unique about them and what enables me to tell them apart from other cars? Inside and outside.

Nissian R34 Skyline
McLaren
Saleen
Toyota Supra
Honda NSX
Nissian 350Z and 300zx
Audi TT
Viper
Mazda rx 7 and 8
Stingray
Koenigsegg CCX
(if you cant or dont want to do all of them thats fine)

What is torque?
What is GT?
What is turbo? (I know sort of, but how does it work?)
What is Nitrus? " "
What is supercharge?
What is a roll cage?

Basically anything you wanna tell me about cars would be great. Websites, pictures of you own car, or cars you only dream of would be awesome! thanks!
Haha. thanks all you contributors! In depth explanations are fine. And I do know, torque is not peeling out. lol
anyway, I will look those cars up. I know how the basic engine works, intake of fuel and air through the camshaft into the engine where it is compressed then explodes and eventually causing the crankshaft to create a rotary motion that spins your tires. I know what carbon fiber is. I know the difference between a lambo mercialogo and gallardo. and how both are ridiculously expensive and dangerous. I know a good friend of mine loves his 300zx but wants a r34 skyline. I know people have a strange facination for supras and nsx's. I know the SSC Ultimate Aero is the fastest car in the world. I know I love riding in fast cars, and the feeling of going over 140 mph. Anything else you feel like sharing would be great. in depth or no. thanks guys :)

Answer
What is torque? Torque is essentially pulling power and/or acceleration off the line. The more torque you have, generally the better acceleration you have and the more weight you can carry/tow before the car starts to struggle. In imperial measurements, it's measured in pound-feet (lb-ft), and Newton metres (Nm) in metric.

What is GT? GT stands for Gran Turismo (translates from Italian to "Grand Touring"). These are top level sports luxury cars which usually have four seats and a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration (where the engine is placed over the front wheels, and sends power to the rear wheels). These are things like Ferraris, Aston Martins, the Nissan Skyline GT-R, and Porsches.

What is a turbocharger? A turbocharger (Sometimes referred to as a "snail" due to the general shape of a turbo) is a device that increases the power of an engine by forcing more air into the engine, to sum it up briefly. Basically exhaust gases from the engine turn a fan (compressor) which draws in air and sends it into the "intake manifold" (which sends a mixture of fuel and air into the cylinders), resulting in more air being sent into the cylinders than a non-turbocharged car.

What is Nitrous? Nitrous Oxide (referred to by car fans as NOS, but more commonly known as the laughing gas used by dentists) is a chemical compound that forces more oxygen into the engine so it can burn more fuel and air. It acts as a temporary means of gaining a lot of power, on most systems you can see a temporary increase of 100 horsepower to the engine.

What is a supercharger? A supercharger is simply another way of doing a turbochargers job. Superchargers are driven by the engine as opposed to the turbocharger which uses exhaust gases emitted by the engine, but they increase power to the engine in a similar manner, ie. by sending more air into the cylinders.

What is a roll cage? A roll cage is a set of metal supports that are bolted into the interior of a car to increase rigidity/stiffness. They're mainly designed for racing cars to improve safety in the event of a rollover, but they also reduce body-roll and in general stiffen the car up so it can corner better and with more precision.

I will explain a few of the cars and why they are famous as well:

Nissan Skyline (R34 generation): The R34 Skyline is one of the most famous incarnations of the Skyline badge. It was developed in 1998-2002 and is probably most famous as a boy-racer's wet dream. Incredibly quick for what it had, but relatively cheap as well. However, they are very rare in America as they were not officially sold there and imports have stopped. They command quite a price tag now.

McLaren F1: Made in 1994, this was famous for being the fastest production car in the world, which was an award it held until 2005 when the Koenigsegg CCR beat it by a mere 1km/h.

Saleen: Saleen is an American tuning and supercar company that is most famous for its work on the Ford Mustangs and its Saleen S7 Twin Turbo supercar.

Toyota Supra: The Supra was a very legendary Japanese sports car. The JZA80, the last generation of it, is the most famous and regarded as one of the best Japanese sports cars in history.

Honda NSX: Commonly referred to as the Japanese Ferrari, this is widely regarded as one of Japan's only "real" supercars. Like the Skyline, it was cheap but very quick for its specifications, and not to mention it wasn't a bad looker either.

Nissan 300ZX, 350Z: The 300ZX was built in two generations and predominantly as a luxury car which is what the "X" in its name designated. This trend was started by the 300ZX's predecessor, the 280ZX. The 300ZX had two major trim levels: the Fairlady Z and the 2+2. The Fairlady Z was a 2-seater coupe whereas the 2+2 had two very small seats in the back row for some added practicality. Both versions had the option of non-turbo, single-turbo on the first generation (Z31), and twin-turbo on the second generation (Z32). The 350Z was the successor to the 300ZX and focussed more on sportiness rather than luxury. It had a larger motor than the 300ZX (although the twin-turbo versions of the 300ZX were actually faster), completely brand new styling and two major trims: Track and Touring.

Audi TT: The TT is a 2-door 2-seat coupe that was designed primarily as a sports-luxury car.

Dodge Viper: The Dodge Viper was first developed as a roadster in the late 80's where it became commonly known as the "Boulevard Dragster", mainly because it couldn't really take corners that well but had a huge amount of power on tap which gave it incredible straight-line performance. Now though the Viper SRT10 is an accomplished sports car that actually has the dynamic ability to back up that monstrous 8.4L V10 engine.

Mazda RX-7 and RX-8: These are mainly only unique because of their engines, which were "Wankel" rotaries, which did not use pistons like a normal car would; instead they used rotors, which got them the name rotaries.

Stingray: A trim level for the early generation Chevrolet Corvettes. The two most famous Stingrays are the C2 (1963-67) and the C3 (1969-78).

Koenigsegg CCX: A Swedish-built hypercar capable of a top speed of about 250mph. The CCX was the successor to the CCR which was the first car to finally knock the McLaren F1 off of its fastest production car perch.

And here's a few of my own little things thrown in:

My own car:

I have a 1988 Nissan Skyline GXE with a few sound system trinkets thrown in. I'm going to throw some modifications on it soon but for now otherwise it's stock as a rock, with 271,000kms/168,000miles on the clock, and a 3.0L inline-6 putting out about 155hp (pretty weak now but it was good back in '88).

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd247/Murcielago_LP640/DSCF1532.jpg

My current reasonably priced dream car is a 2004-05 Subaru Impreza WRX, much like the picture below, which was my mum's old example of this model car. All-wheel-drive, a 2.0L turbocharged flat-4 engine with a computer and exhaust system upgrade as well as new springs and a new set of wheels.

Your top ten sports and racing cars?

Barzillai

Answer
10. Porsche 917/30 - in terms of sheer power and dominance it would rank much higher on this list... but run for just 1973 pushes it down quite a bit. But would have to be on any list of best race cars, which is why it just nudged ahead of so many other deserving entries for the tenth spot.

9. Chaparral 2J - another dominant Can Am car. Very inventive even if this particular avenue for downforce is forever lost in modern regulations.

8. Auto Union C V16 - when looking at the sheer power of these old cars, and the amount of rubber they drove on, one has to seriously wonder just how brave (insane) those drivers were.

7. Porsche 908/3 - a hard choice, including this but not the 917k! Both shared the same basic chassis design (although in different scale). The 908/3's lightweight, nimbleness, and success at the punishing Nordschleife give it the edge.

6. 1962 Keith Black Top Fuel Dragster - driven by Don Prudhomme, this car racked up a record 236 wins (only 7 losses). As the single winningest car in pro racing, it has to be on the list!

5. Mclaren MP4/4 - 15 of 16 races were wins. The last and the best of the turbo F1 cars!

4. Jaguar C-Type - fast and beautiful. Images of these racing down the Mulsanne straight are among the most iconic images in motorsports.

3. Audi R8 - a new version of the old Silver Arrows? Successful and beautiful and massively ahead of the competition.

2. Ferrari F2002 - very successful, but much more than a minor evolution from the F2001. Some major advances and a car that would form the basis for the next two very successful Ferrari efforts.

1. Porsche 956/962 - hard to argue with that much success! And over a period spanning more than 10 years! An easy choice for number 1.

Try magazines. Here are some of the websites for my favorite ones that cater to different sorts of racing:

Grassroots Motorsports http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com/ Covers ammatuer road racing, rally racing, and autocross. One of the more "serious" magazines - it gives a lot of ink to real race cars instead of show cars.

Sport Compact Car http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/ A magazine that mostly covers imports, with a lot of good technical information.

Car Craft http://www.carcraft.com Focuses on American V8 power and going fast on a low budget. Probably one of the most overtly about street racing.

Sometimes magazines will overhype things - I've tried to present some of the more hype-free ones, but even so, the cars there often are built by pros who know what they are doing, and home-built efforts to copy them sometimes fall short. I'd suggest paying a few visits in person to the local dragstrip. There you'll get to see how fast cars are in the real world - anybody who thinks his cold air intake and exhaust will give him 60 more horsepower is going to find out just what they really are good for when the light turns green.

WHY DO  EUROPEAN PPL DONT LIKE OR DENY THAT AMERICAN SPORT CARS ARE BETTER?

Freddy

a good example is the chevy corvette that won the lemans last year. I see alot of comments on youtube that american sport cars suck they dont handle that good they fall apart all that type of stuff. So my question is if american sports cars were really that bad why did the chevy corvette won the lemans against all the top euro sport cars (ferrari, lamborghini, porche, and the japanese gtr etc) and ppl bash the zr1about it only goes in a straight line and cant hit good corners. the zr1 has the fastest lap  time (7:19 sec)in the nurburgring track.
going back to the lemans yes the corvette was heavily  modified but so was ferrari and all the other euro cars so there was no excuse for all these great car companies to lose , and why is bugatti ss backing down from a race against the venom gt? so why do all these ppl hate on american sport cars. if they keep winning their competitions in their own country.

First things first:

Le Mans... while the C6R did get a class win, and Corvette's racing team has a fantastic record in sports racing, it was 11th overall. The C6R is also the least production based car among the GT competition in sports car racing - as an evolution of the C5R it shares 0% with the road car (where as the Ferrari and other cars share the same engine block and unibody as the road car). The C6R is a fantastic car, and the street going Corvette is as well... but using that as an example as to "how great US made cars are" isn't a very good argument.

And while the ZR1 did do 7:19 on Nordschleife, this is not the fastest time nor even the fastest time by a street car, and it was done on DOT Slicks... the 7:38 would be the car's time on actual street tires (placing it behind the Porsche Turbo, the Nissan GTR, the Koenigsegg CCR, the Porsche GT3RS, the Ferrari 458, the Porsche GT2... etc). It's fast... but not quite THAT fast (fit the others with such tires, and then compare again).

So the ZR1 and Corvettes in general are excellent cars... the Viper ACR too. But why the poor reputation? It starts with things like Ford building Mustangs with leaf spring suspension in the back. It continues with build quality issues like soda cans left in door panels on the assembly line (saw that when consulting with GM). And it culminates when you see a Ford GT at a track day built such that the rear body panels melt because it seems, nobody at Ford ever thought to test the heat resistance of the panels around the exhaust and what they would look like after a mere 20 minutes on the track!

Compare that to the build quality and engineering that lets many of those German and Italian cars go straight from the showroom to the track, where they not only post excellent time but also hold up to the wear and tear without problem. Of course, they also cost more, and this is often time what you are paying for and in many cases it's an slightly unfair due to this.

Outside of the Corvette though (and while the Viper and Ford GT were around), US companies have mostly been uninterested in producing high end sports cars. Compare that to the offerings from Europe and the occasional Japanese offerings (add that Corvettes cost much more than these in Europe), and you really have to ask this question?

As for the Venom and the Veyron... the Veyron is not by any means built for racing. The achievement in technology is getting that performance from a touring car with all of it's luxury, not the total performance. As such, they are likely not paying attention to Hennessy's challenge anymore than Hennessey would accept a challenge to race a Radical SR3 (which would likely spank it something bad even though it would have 800hp less).

Classic European Sports Cars?

sugar-n-sp

I plan on writing a novel in which one of the characters (a badass, sexy chick) restores a classic car which will be seen and driven several times throughout (she's also very proud of this car). I can't seem to find the right model to use. I want a European classic kind of sporty car. Something that's cool, sleek and fast and handles well and makes people go "oh yeahh". I would really appreciate some suggestions, and pictures would be helpful too.
I forgot to mention that I would prefer Hardtops.

Answer
I had a MGA "Twin Cam" 1959 as a teenager - later an MGB 1965 -
Back then the Triumph TR-3 and TR-4 were popular too -
Austin Healey 3000 as well - and Lotus Elan if you could afford
I have seen these in USA when I lived there...
These are cars of the late-1950s to mid-1960s era, originally -

Pictures exist in Wikipedia

All existed on hard-top versions -
Or one that you could remove/replace with ragtop

I am 16 years old and I am am looking for a cool car. A stick shift would be pretty cool to to have but but I am ok with automatic too. I would preferably like to have a car also under 100,000 miles. I AM NOT ALOUD TO GET A SPORTS CAR! What can I get?

Answer
Well, if you don't want a sports car, then you should look at the basics. Try a 2005 and up Mazda 3, 2000 and up Toyota Camry, or even a nice 2004 + up Honda Accord. My pick is the 2007 Hyundai Sonata, because it has a V6, good fuel- efficeincy, and it's in your price range.
