what's the meaning on those letters on cars? like S,SE,XE, etc.?

Answer
They mean whatever the manufacturer decides they mean and sometimes they don't mean anything. There is no standard. Sometimes these letters are just letters...

Generally speaking, GT means "Grand Tourisme" or "Granturismo" and denotes a sporty version. GL means "Grand Luxe" or "Granlusso" and denotes a luxury version. SS means "Super Sport" and denotes a high performance model. GTO means "Granturismo Omologato" and denotes a limited-edition very high-performance model.

Note that these names are usually in French or Italian, but there is no rule here either.

My favorite were the old Omni GLH and GLHS which supposedly stood for "Goes Like Hell" and "Goes Like Hell Somemore".

To those who know about cars very well. I will choose best answer?

Q. I just asked this very same question awhile ago, and I only received one answer. The answer was fine, but it didn't answer all my questions.

I have 3 cars in mind.

Brand New Honda accord sedan EX, Brand New Toyota Camry SE, and a used 2005 Mercedes-Benz E320.

All cars cost the same. 24K.

I don't like the inside design of the Camry. And I don't like the design of the dashboard of the Honda accord. But everything about the Mercedes is fantastic.

If I choose the Mercedes, will insurance per month or year cost more than the Honda and the Toyota just because it is a Mercedes?

Also, the Mercedes only has 30K Mileage on it, which is good.

Answer
Repair costs on the Benz will eat you alive. Even something as simple as small routine maintenance is an arm and a leg. Also, be careful, you are coming close to the 30K inspection/mainenance interval. Insurance on the Benz will still be more in general due to the price/cost of replacement parts.

That leaves the Honda, and the Toyota. The Accord EX is more of a luxury model and the Camry SE is the sports edition. I am not sure why you are looking at the different designs. Anyway, both are very practical, fuel efficient (Toyota slightly better), and inexpensive to own and maintain. Both are relatively new in design and will look fresh for a few years. However, when you go to trade them, the Toyota will maintain the better resale value, look at the Camry XE, or XLE for yet better resale value.

How do you start a career in professional racing?

Like those f1 or sports car racing? I have thought of what I want to become when I grow up and I love cars. I don't like most of the other jobs and I saw a video of car racing.
I know I am not old enough yet but how do I start a career and how much money would I make? Also how much money do I need to start a racing career?
It would be great if you could tell me the names of all the types of races like f1 because I can search about it on the internet.

Answer
Try to get into a local go kartng club or track and go from there.
It would cost between 2-6 thousand dollars just for the kart though and theres entry fees and all that to, but if your very passionate about motor sport then give it ago (if you are good enough you will start making money so its not all bad).
As for some f1 type series there is gp2 which follows f1 and is sought of like the category below f1
There is Indy Car but that is mostly oval racing

What type of racing or career is this?

BMWbuyerGo

Racing where you take Porshe's, BMW's, Viper's, Maserati's, Jaguar's, Audi's, or pretty much any other German, Italian, French car or any from europe some from America oh and cars ftrom Japan compete in this racing. This racing is represented in the Gran Turismo video game series better then any other video game. Regular sports cars are converted to have more power and performance and sponsers are added. Races can be on the famous Laguna Seca Raceway, Nurburgring, or Le Mans. An example of the cars used is the BMW M3 GTR, BMW Mclaren, Dodge Viper GTS, these aren't cars that are one seated speed machines that are similer to formula one.

So what is this racing called?
What do I have to go through to become a racer in this racing?
Is it possible to become a racer from places in the Eastern U.S like is there a college I should go to or are these career path's only available in California and Asia and Europe?

Answer
The closest thing to what you want is the US Touring Car Championship -- learn more at www.ustcc.com. You become a racer in this series by getting out there and racing -- typically in the US that means karts, then midgets, and eventually onto bigger and better series. There are karting organizations in the Northeast -- just look around on the Web.

Can a moderate sport car be tuned or modified to compete with an exotic sport car?

sports cars lotus on Live and Breathe It... Choose your LOTUS -- Lotus Cars Ltd.
sports cars lotus image

Tesla

Kind of a weird question. I have to write a paper at school where I try to prove a thesis. I have always wondered personally if a more moderate sports car (such as an audi R8 aston martin db9 or Honda NSX) can be tweaked or modified to hold its own against more exotic super cars like lambos or Ferraris, Mclarens, SSC etc.. I only have a basic knowledge of cars, how torque and horsepower work, what's ideal when trying to build a fast car, and I understand that some cars can compete in theory (like driving in a straight line on ideal roads) but not when considering turning or other real life situations. I would like to know what type of modifications can be done or are ideal, and if they would give any of the examples listed a fighting chance against say a ventador or Ultimate aero or something of similar stats

Answer
The modifications would fall into area's of:
1. Suspension
2. Aerodynamics
3. Power.
Suspension includes brakes, shocks, springs and arm lengths.
Air management is needed to keep the car from lifting and reduce aero drag when possible and having a way to produce air drag if needed.
Power is needed for raw speed.
Now horse power is needed- this is just an expression for how much weight is being moved a second. For a 2000 lb. car to go 210 mph it takes a specific amount of horsepower when aero drag ins considered constant. But it is not- at about 50 miles per hour air for resistance purposes is more like a fluid then air. This is why a straight formula for horsepower and top speed does not work. The actual resistance increases and with the right formula's compensation can be made for air drag.
Torque is the ability to effect a change, this determines rate of acceleration.
So to match acceleration rates- it will take torque, to match top speed takes horse power. To decrease the amount of horsepower needed air management becomes important.
Now the reason it is not done on a regular biases is simple a Honda no matter how fast is still a Honda. The amount of dollars needed to make it perform like a super car just is not worth the bragging rights.
Keep in mind Super cars are not that practical and are just toys.
Those who have the money to sink into a R8 and the like to make it match other super cars performance would just go buy the real thing.
In all reality a Lotus would be just as much fun and a lot cheaper.

What car should I get out of these choices?

Jessica Ro

2006 and up model mustang v6.
Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe.
2005 Lotus Elise.

Which car should I get? I'm interested in a great-looking sports car.

Porsche VS Mustang VS Lotus Elise...

What do you think?

Answer
Porsche vs Mustang vs an Elise? Good looking as in its great to look at or people will be impressed with your car (in terms of engine, etc.) Assuming money is no object: I would not go with the Mustang. Though Mustangs are great, its engine just doesn't offer as much power as you would think. While say Mitsubishi can squeeze out a little over 270 hp out of a engine that's only 2 liters (Evo), the 2006 base Mustangs gets like 210 hp out of its V6 engine. Also, it only gets a top speed of 118 mph (that's if your talking about getting stock, I'm pretty sure a GT has a top speed of over 130 mph) and does 0-60 in about 7 seconds or so. The Mustang is an icon and everyone will recognize you and your car because of it.

I'm not sure as to which type of Carrera you are referring to, "Modern" Carrera (because of the time frame of the other two cars or 3.2 Carrera series (the 1980's version)? If it's the 911 3.2 Carrera series well that has a top speed of 150 mph and 0-60 in over 5 seconds. It also has about the same hp as the 2006 Mustang. The "Modern" 911 Carrera has over 400 hp, goes from 0-60 in under 5 seconds and has the highest top speed of the cars you have mentioned at over 170 mph. Though the Porsche isn't the greatest looking car, people would be impressed with its badge and well Porsche tend to have good engines (gear-heads will probably notice you for it).

The Lotus Elise is incredibly light weight and a bit cramped to fit in. It also has less hp in comparison to the cars you listed. Despite have fewer hp it will do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds and a top speed of around 150 mph. It doesn't really offer much in terms of safety and I don't believe there are many options that were available for the car (as lotus has typically tried to leave out as much as possible to save weight). The Elise is probably the most interesting and best looking car from the ones you listed (at least in my opinion) but the Elise doesn't have many options to offer (as I mentioned), aren't as safe in comparison to the other cars (as its basically a go kart. Great fun though!), and tend to be unreliable at times.

I don't know if the mini breakdowns of the cars helped you reach a decision but I think you should go with the Porsche (I tend to like their engines, despite their look and so I could be a little biased). I would say 1) Porsche 2) Lotus 3) Mustang

Is a 4 seat car consitered a sports car?

sports cars 4 seats on This futuristic concept shows how BMW can build a four-seat sports car ...
sports cars 4 seats image

Isaac

I was wondering if a car with four seats can be considered a sports car?

Answer
It depends on your definition of 4 seats. In earlier times, they had cars known as " 2 + 2" which was a 4 seat car but, you didn't get comfortable in the back seat; you were there for the ride because it was a place to sit down.

4 seats = yes
4 doors = sports "sedan", NOT sports car. Sports Cars NEVER have 4 doors ONLY 2 doors can be Sports Cars !

would you consider a lancer a sports car outside of the united states?

cristian m

Me and my friend are in an argument considering if a lancer was really a sports car outside of the united states.

Answer
omg i hate it when people get so obnoxious for the definitions of cars. a car can be a sports car despite having rear seats. if not try to race a miata with an audi S8 and see the sports car get its butt whooped. while there are varying degrees of how sporty a car can be, if they are designed for performance in mind particularly taking performance at the cost of other features like comfort, economy or usability then the car is a sports car.
here in canada, the lancer has a wide range of performance. the entry level lancer isnt really considered to be a sports car. it lacks power (less than 200 hp) has front wheel drive and doesnt have a sports tuned suspension. the ralliart and evo versions are different stories though, their increased power, AWD and tuned suspension give them performance that makes them sports cars.

also a sports car doesnt have to have 2 doors nor a v8. by that definition an audi rs7 or nissan gt-r wouldnt be sports cars because one has 4 doors and the other has a v6.

I want to get a sports car. Money is not a problem I just want the details.

Answer
Breakdown and details of what? You didn't say that part. How much it will cost? Forget it. This place isn't an insurance company website, so you can't get an accurate quote here. You have to contact an insurance provider (online, on phone, whatever) and get an actual quote for that info. Then you have to contact another and then another so you can compare the prices.

You just want to know what all that stupid-sounding coverage is on the policy? I can help with that, but it won't be in great detail. Here's a breakdown of the coverage you can buy...

Liability: Covers loss or damage to other people and their property that your vehicle causes. This is the stuff you're required by law to have.

Accident Benefits: This covers your injuries, medical bills, lost income etc. if you're hurt in an accident, even if the accident was your fault. It goes by many different names depending on where you live.

Uninsured Motorist: Covers your damage if the other vehicle is at fault but has no insurance.

Collision: Covers your vehicle for at-fault accidents, hit and run damage, and the vehicle spontaneously flipping over.

Comprehensive: Covers your vehicle for 'non-accident' damage like fire, theft, lightning, falling objects, hail, and other stuff. Always look up the list of what is and isn't included.

Loss Of Use: Covers the cost of a rental if your vehicle is in the shop due to an insurance claim.

There you go, that's a very basic rundown of the very basics. You'll still need to look into things like limits, deductibles, conditions and exclusions yourself, and there are a few possible options I didn't even mention, but that's how the coverages under your policy work in layman's terms.

What's the cheapest or the average cost of car insurance?

Kay

Im turning 16 this coming november and im gonna use my sister's car; but its a 2 door car, which is considered a sports car and Im under 18. And everyone is telling me that the insurance is gonna be really expensive. Does anyone know what the cheaptest cost or car insurance is gonna be or atleast the averge cost.

And do you pay monthly?

I only have to pay 2000 for the car to come from texas to california but thats not what my mom is worried about. its the car insurance; so please help me. Thanks.

Answer
Easiest way to find out is just get some quotes. I suggest going to Progressive.com and compare them. I doubt your insurance will be too expensive unless you get full coverage. Getting the state requirements and liability insurance will be your best bet.

Also make sure you dont get any traffic violations or wrecks and if you do make sure you get a lawyer because those things are what really jacks up your insurance.

You may also be eligible for certain discounts if you are a student and have taken a driving education class.

Last but not least when you do pick an insurance company be sure you stay with them. Because the longer you work with a certain company the more they will work with you on lower rates in the future.

Who is excited about the Tesla Roadster?

Q. All electric sports car. 137mph. 0-60 in 4 secs. 250 miles on a full charge that takes 3 hours. That is soooo much better than going to the pump so often. I can't wait for the next ones they make under $50k.

Answer
------------
People may not realize it quite yet, but this is the beginning of a revolution in transportation. It has been in our local newspapers here in Detroit, that Tesla is coming here to hire engineering talent for their upcoming electric family sedan.
*
The Tesla is not alone, either. Look at this car:
*
http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html
*
The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:

-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
Plus, I have been following, over the past year, news of at least two other emerging battery technologies that are as good or better than the Altairnanos above.
*
Incidentally, in response to one of the other posters, new Li-Ion battery designs are not hazardous - the Altairnano design has been tested by crushing and puncturing, with no fire or explosion resulting (which makes it safer than gasoline.)
*
Likewise, other negative speculations you may see about EV batteries are usually based on the assumption that battery technology has not evolved in the past 30 years.
*
Technology does not stand still.

Looking for 2010, 2011 or 2012 luxury car for around 30,000 with close to 40 mpg. My wife and I don't want to settle for a Prius or Civic, but we do want good MPG because we drive so much. Is this possible without spending too much more?

Answer
If you take a closer look at the Prius, you'll see that you aren't "settling". It has many of features only found in luxury cars. It's a mid-sized car, not a compact like the Civic, so room is not a problem.

Note that decent luxury cars start at about $45,000.

My 2004 Prius has cost 12 cents per mile for dealer maintenance, tires, and fuel combined over the 120,000 trouble-free miles I've driven it so far.

My 2004 Prius MPG from the logbook. (Complete years only):
2003-2004 -- 50.8 mpg 17,628 miles
2005 -- 52.6 mpg 14,688 miles
2006 -- 56.3 mpg 16174 miles
2007 -- 57.3 mpg 18384 miles
2008 -- 59.9 mpg 21755 miles

What are some cars that come with leather and are reliable?

Braga

Hi. Im 17 looking for a car. I want to spend around 4.5 - 5k for a car. I was origionally going to go with a Lexus ES300, but its mpg isnt that great and Super gas costs are pretty high. What sort of luxury cars out there that take regular gas and are reliable. I was looking at a Mazda 626, but people have said they're transmission have problems eventually.

Answer
First of all, Mazda 626s, while okay cars, are not remotely considered to be "luxury" cars. The vehicles that fit in this description include Lexus, Infinity, Acura, Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes, etc. Virtually all of them will have leather seats, though there all always exceptions. Unfortunately, the only luxury cars that will be in your price range are going to have extremely high miles on them. If this is not a concern of yours, then go for it. Plan on sinking quite a bit of money into your car the entire time you own it.

Your not imagining, there was a prototype/concept model W2 that came out in the late 70's. Production began in 1989

So what is the best GT car in the world? Some models that come to mind are: BMW M6, Mercedes CLKs and CLs, Audi S5, Bentley GT, and Jaguar XKR. I have a G35 coupe, a decent GT car, but it pales in comparision to the likes to an M6.

How do i convince my parents to let me buy a 1981 Fiat Spider?

I'm 16 and I currently own a Geo Prizm. Its really falling apart (burns a quart of oil a week) and I wouldn't mind a new car. The ones I've seen on ebay aren't too expensive and I would be able to pay for about half of the car. I just need to convince my parents that it would be safe enough and not too much of a "sports car."

Answer
i hate to burst your bubble but if your parents dont think your responsible enough to have it then you have to go back in time and figure out why. what did you do for them to think this. once you figure that out you just might be able to convince them. maybe its a money issue with insurance do you pay it or do they. any way look at the bright side in two years you can buy what you want

What is the best electric kit sports car for my money? ?

Futch

What is the best electric sports car? I want an electric sports car, but with the paycheck of a budding engineer I can't buy anything better than a Nissan Leaf. I thought maybe a kit car would be cheaper and I looked all over online but so far the only sports, electric kit car I can find is the Sterling kit car. It looks great, and the price is great, but it seems like they don't even give you the electric motor. Are there other electric kit sports cars?

Answer
You can find kits to convert a gasoline car to an electric one. So any kit car would do. The lighter the better.
But right now I don't know of any one marketing an electric kit car, let a lone one that is a sports car.
Sounds like a market need is not being met. I say this with reservations because a lot of kit car companies don't make it.
So here is what I suggest-
Do an internet search for "locost electric", no doubt some one has built one already. The plans are pretty much public domain. This car has been assembled in garages from spares and bulk materials. The body work is simple and the combination is light weight. Now this is not a year round car as tops are hard to find and may not match the exact lines of a home built. But they can be built pretty cheap depending on where you buy your material and how handy you are with tools.
Note Locost Car: a car patterned after the Lotus 7 (Caterham).

Which job is better and with economy doing poor and with the world changing and becoming more tech which job is probably best later in the future?

Answer
Both careers are good and in high demand or going to be in high demand. however, IMO, the career with more promise and future is ID (industrial design). mainly because Graphic design is limited to digital media, packaging and print media, ID is everywhere from cars to medical equipment to furniture to electronic gadgets and stuff. if you go into ID its pretty broad so you have to specialize in either product design, transportation design or furniture design. but if you know your way you can do pretty much anything. id say ID is alittle more specialized than graphic design but it can go along way. plus if you do go into ID chances are if you dont find a job you can land a graphic design pretty easy, mainly because in ID you get basics in graphic design.

while GD is a good career, ID will be in higher demand because you'll always need someone to design products. a Engineer cannot think like a Designer, and because ID is such a specialized degree few schools offer it as opposed to GD. in GD you dont really need a BS degree, you can pick up a book in a books store and study yourself. either ID or GD both rely heavily on your portfolio, your collection of previous work. if youre really talented you dont need a college degree you just flash them your portfolio and chances are you get a job. but thats a rare scenario because if thats the case you REALLY REALLY REALLY have to be talented. otherwise a BS will work in getting your foot in the door for either degree.

initial salaries are roughly the same. last i checked GD starting salaries go for around $38k while ID starting salaries go for $45-48k. the lower 25% for GD makes around $60k and for ID around $70-88k depending on who you work for and how high up you go. its extremely competitive both careers and relies heavily on your portfolio.

GD and ID both are international careers, ID however can have you working in all sorts of areas internatioally so IMO ID would be a far better choice than GD. once you get several years under your belt and know and or established personal contacts with clients you can start up your own design firm and REALLY make BIG money working for popular brands. I.E. Meta design works for alot of brands including Volkswagen, Audi, NIke, Microsoft, Adobe systems, etc etc.

i dont have a degree in either (in fact im currently in a deadlock between choosing a Sports Management degree and a INdustrial Design degree) but at this point ive done so much research. hope that helps

How much is my classic Porsche worth?

Jimmy T

I was wondering what my 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera is worth?

It has a 3.2 liter, 6 cyl engine. 60k miles. "Good" condition (paint, interior & mechanics). The car is primarily driven on the weekends (kept covered inside a garage in Virginia).

I'm just not sure whether I want to keep it long-term or not. Its nearly paid off, but insurance, maintenance and parking costs have me weighing my options.

Also, should I expect the value to escalate once it becomes an antique (25 yrs old)? Should I get antique plates and antque insurance in that case?

Answer
The 3.2L Carreras are good cars, and alot of fun as well. The DME fuel management was an improvement from the 911SC. The 1985 Carrera had a few minor improvements from the 1984 Model Year (when it was introduced), but lacked the AC redesign that came in 1986, and the change to the G50 Transmission in 1987. As a generalization, the 1987-89 models are considered the most desirable (though perosnally, I quite like the earlier 915 transmission; which is also quite a bit lighter).

In terms of value, these cars can run from a low of $15k, upto the mid-upper $20k range. Coupes tend to be the most desirable. If the engine performs well in compression and leak down tests, there is no visable rust, and things are in generally good condition, you should be in the upper half of that range.

In terms of color, Guards Red is not especially desirable (as far as I know few people that actively seek it out as their favorite color)... but it is also not a color that most find objectionable (may not top the list, but it is a liked color). If the paint is in good condition (and original), this will probably help the overall value.

The milage is probably a plus for someone that wants to use this as a show car. However, for a car that is to be driven, the low milage would be more of a warning sign. The older 911s were made to be driven, and simply sitting that much likely means there are many parts that have not been properly lubricated by running, and will be prone to failure once they come under regular use. Overall though, people less familar with older Porsches will look at the milage as a plus, and it should only affect the value in a positive way.

As for future value? The 3.2 Carrera is the last of the impact bumper era, and in many ways the last of the "classic" 911 (with the 964 bringing in things like power steering, coil overs replacing the torsion bars, etc); as such there has been an increasing interest in these cars. They represent some of the best qualities of the 911 to that time, and some of the best performance for a basic street version of a 911. However, as the 1980s was a period of high sales for Porsche, there are ALOT of these cars still out there. As such, it's unlikely they will ever be highly sought after by collectors (rarer items like the Club Sport option excepted).

Further, the fact that the newer model Porches (986 and 996 in particular) have seen such rapid devaluation compared to the earlier cars, will probably keep cars like a mid-80s 911 from appreciating much, if at all. On the plus side, as some of these newer cars have already started to sell for less than the older cars, the older cars can be considered at, or at least close to the bottom of their devaluation.

If you love the car, keep it an enjoy it! They are fun cars (and most that sell them spend many years after wishing they hadn't). But if you are looking at it as an investment, you would be better off looking at a much older 911.
