I was wondering how much he has to weigh or how old he has to be in order to face forward? He gets aggravated because he cant see anything! When is he ready to face forward instead of rear facing?

Answer
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life! Though this is the standard guideline that most people think they should follow, in fact it is a barest of minimums. So an 8 months old should absolutely stay rear facing for a good long time yet. Here's why:
1)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
2)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
3)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
4)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)

It works this way: when you get in an accident and run into something, the car stop suddently, but everything and everyone in the car keeps moving in the direction the car was moving when it stopped, in most accidents, this is forward. So in an accident with a child in a forward facing seat, his head, the heaviest part of the body on babies and toddlers, flies forward very forcefully and easily snaps. If that same child is in a rear facing seat, his head tries to fly forward but is supported by the back of the rear facing seat, so there is no stress put on the child's neck and spine.

Check out this photo album exclusively of rear facing kids, many of them much older than 12 months: http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbum.aspx There isn't a single documented case of a child breaking their legs b/c they were rear facing in an accident. There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better.

As for him being aggravated, in truth, if he is upset it likely has nothing to do with the direction he is facing, since he has only ever been rear facing, he doesn't even know there is an alternative, so how can he possibly be upset about something he doesn't know exists? Most kids PREFER to be rear facing. Their legs and hips are better supported in a rear facing seat than in a forward facing one. Perhaps he is running out of room in his infant carrier or wants to sit more upright. 8 month olds no longer need to be at that strict 45 degree recline anymore, they can't sit straight up yet, but can be somewhere between 30-45 degrees and he would then be able to see out the side and rear windows better. So get a convertible car seat and install it slightly more upright and it very likely will solve the problem. Best bets:
The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It's one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

The Compass Tue Fit, also sold as The First Years True Fit, is a great choice, too. Here's a thread talking all about it: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=37221&highlight=truefit Has 16.5 inch top harness slots, half inch shorter than the Britax Marathon and Evenflo Triumph Advance. Rear faces to 35lbs, forward faces to 65lbs, has built-in lockoffs, and you never have to rethread the harness to change harness height. The headrest is removable to fit better in smaller cars. $179 for the one cover Walmart offers it in, check Babies R Us and other stores for different covers at a little more expensive price.

When shopping Remember these rules:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)children need to stay rear facing as long as possible.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
A)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
B)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
C)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
D)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and weight - 40" tall and weighs 41lbs. He outgrew the 40lbs seats shortly after his 2nd birthday. It was a total waste of money. He now has a Britax Marathon, which goes to 65lbs, and will be able to fit it for some time yet. If I'd have bought it when he was born, I could have had one car seat this whole time instead of the 3 I wasted money on. They are more expensive for many reasons, this is one.

So...knowing all that, here's some about specific seats. Please don't get a Graco Comfort Sport. Car seat techs call it the 'crappysport'. LOL Its a crappy seat that won't last your child very long b/c it has a really short shell. The straps twist all the time, and if they're twisted they won't support your child in a wreck properly. They're hard to install. There's nothing good about these seats except perhaps they're cheap sometimes. Ditto the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And that's another misleading thing the box says - 5-100lbs. What the box fails to mention (you don't find out until reading the manual!) is that the harness only goes to 40lbs, NOT 100lbs! After 40lbs it must be used as a booster. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy.

should i get an 05 g35 coupe or an 06 subaru wrx?

Alex R

what are the pros and cons of both cars? I'm interested in performance, reliability, sound system and style. please don't bash on either car i just want to know peoples personal opinions.
thanks

Answer
Well to be honest style is a subjective term, one which is best decided for yourself as to whether you prefer smooth clean lines (G35) or aerodynamic aggressiveness (WRX).

Performance is easier to get around. The G35 and WRX are pretty much neck-and-neck for acceleration and top speed, however the means in which they achieve it are completely different.

The G35 has a 350Z-derived VQ35DE 3.5L V6 producing around 300hp, whereas the Subaru has an EJ255 2.5L turbocharged flat-4 "Boxer" producing 230hp. It's down on power but the Subaru has the benefit of a very sophisticated AWD system to get the power down whereas the G35 is rear-wheel-drive (with an all-wheel-drive optional extra available in the G35x). The G35 has a choice of a 6-speed manual (0-60 in mid-high 5s) and a 5-speed automatic with sports shift (0-60 in 6.2 seconds), whereas the Subaru has a choice of a 5-speed manual (0-60 in 5.5 seconds) or a 4-speed auto (0-60 in 6.2 seconds). Both will hit 155mph.

In terms of handling, the Subaru has loads more grip and stability because of it's all-paw drivetrain and it will be a little more fun to drive as well. The G35 is a very well-sorted sports-lux coupé but it's heavier and a little more wallowy.

In terms of reliability again, it's pretty much the same story. The Subaru's Boxer engine is a very sturdy block, as is the VQ35DE in the G35, however as it's billed as a luxury car, the G35 is going to be a little more expensive to repair in the rare chance something major goes wrong with it.

In terms of the standard sound system, by far and away the G35 is going to be better in that respect, however in either case if you want a really good sound system just spend some cash on a good aftermarket set; it'll beat OEM sound any time.

Quick sum up then:

G35
Pros:
- Luxurious
- Reliable
- Effortless atmo power from the engine
- Refined transmissions and a more comfy place to be.

Cons:
- Will be a bit more lairy in wet conditions
- More expensive to repair than the Subaru

WRX
Pros:
- Boosted flat-4 provides a good kick in the pants and a great noise to boot.
- Pin-sharp dynamics and AWD security
- Very reliable
- Excellent seats and driving position

Cons:
- For the price you could be mistaken for thinking the interior is from the 1990s
- Not the most comfortable car in the world over rough surfaces
- Transmissions do the job but feel antiquated, especially the four-speed automatic. Desperately needs an STi 6-cog manual.

I'm looking for a sports car for under 10k. I'm obviously looking for a used one. I'm looked at a few older Porsche Boxsters and MR2 Spyders. What are some other really good looking cars that would be under 10k? It also has to have no more that 70k miles on it. I don't want one that's at the end of its life.

Answer
A Boxster will cost you an arm and a leg to maintain. An MR2 is a good choice but the last generation of them have almost no luggage space, so keep that in mind if you want to use it regularly. Likewise a Saturn Sky or Pontiac Solstice could probably be had for that price, but again almost no luggage space. The best sub 10K sports car is a Miata, hands down. Fun, quick enough, durable/reliable, and economical.

Do you think a 2008 Mustang GT or Normal insurance would cost more than a 2010 Ford Focus SES?

dANNY

Lets say there both used, under 10k of miles. Full coverage on my Ford Focus was 200 dollars when i got it, but since ive been accident free is only $175 a month. Ford Focus ses is the highest model of the focus and may be considered a sports car im not sure. I like in MD if that makes a different.

Answer
mustang is going to be more, it is a sports car, and a focus is an economy car, possibly a sporty car but i dont know of any insurance that classifies a focus as a sports car. i'd talk to your insurance agent and possibly shop around. you might pay less in coverage on the car itself but your liability is definitely going to go up

I once saw a video on YouTube about a style of walking or running that involves taking the most direct route in a fluid movement. In the video, people scaled walls, jumped over fences, across buildings, over cars, in a very fluid, non-chalant manner. What is this called? I believe it starts with Jou- and was originated by a guy in France not that long ago.

Answer
Ohh ohh I know this one... The sport is called Parkour, originally named Yamakasi. The referred wikipedia article has the full story. I saw a documentary on the original authors of the sport and the article lines up very closely with what was said in the documentary.

It was featured in the latest James Bond movie, the remake of Casino Royale where the "gun for hire bomb maker" is trying to out run James through the construction site.

Its amazing stuff. I would love to be able to run and jump like they do.

How can I help my parents pay for gas money for my car when I dont have time for a job?

bbyack10

I am in sports all the time and on the weekends i go 3 hours to my dads house so I cant have a job and I need to find a way to help my parents out with my gas money!

Answer
Maybe doing something around the house that your parents would have to pay for someone else to do. My friend used to clean the bathrooms in their house for money because her mom usually hired a maid to do that. So, my friend took over the job and she got the money instead.

How is the Mitsubishi Lancer GTS classified by most insurance companies?

sports cars ratings on Infiniti Sports Cars Walllpapers | Car Wallpapers and Reviews
sports cars ratings image

Steve C

I've been researching insurance quotes in preparation for buying a new (used) car, mainly for various sporty compact sedans. When I got to the 2010 Mitsu Lancer GTS, I was pretty appalled at how much higher the quote was than the others, like the Subaru Impreza and Mazda3 Sport, despite having extremely similar horsepower, speed, safety features and crash test ratings. Is it considered a sports car or something? Does it get lumped in with the uber-expensive Evo because of the word "Lancer"?

Answer
You should be asking your insurance agent these questions, not a bunch of Yahoo's! Tell the insurance company you're interested in a quote on a Mitsubishi Lancer and give him the VIN, don't tell them it's turbo charged.

What car should I get for my 16th birthday?

iiTimmmy

I have 250,000 dollars. thats all my mom is letting me spend for a car. I want a fast sports car, but luxury. But really fast and comfortable. What car should I buy?

Answer
Choosing your teen's first car can be a rocky process, especially when your child wants the latest, coolest car and you were thinking more along the lines of safety. Learn how to choose a first car that will please you and your teen.
1.
Step 1

Speak to your teen about driving. Enroll them in driving school and accompany them for drives with their learner's permit. The more involved you are in your teenager's driving experience, the more likely they are to heed your advice when the topic shifts to their dream car.
2.
Step 2

Make your child work for the car. Require her to take on more chores, bring home straight A's or tutor a sibling.
3.
Step 3

Research automobile resources, such as Vehix, Edmunds, and Cars Direct. These websites provide safety ratings, automobile reviews, pricing, car quotes and insurance information.
4.
Step 4

Communicate with your teenager. Learn what colors and models he likes, but let them know that you have the final say in which car is picked.
5.
Step 5

Go for a reliable model. Honda Civics are affordable and dependable cars that last a long time. Sure, your child may crave the newest BMW, but go for affordability and safety. Luxury can come later.
6.
Step 6

Speak with your insurance company. Find out the costs of adding a new driver to your policy and research which cars will cost you how much. Obviously, a sports car will cost more to insure than a sedan. Try to find a balance that will appease both your teen and your wallet.

How many more seasons can the Spurs realistically contend with their current core?

The Spurs have been one of the NBA's elite franchises ever since drafting Tim Duncan in 1997. They have won 4 championships and have the best winning percentage of any North American sports franchise since then! They are still currently contenders even now with a core of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker, but how long can they stay contenders now that Duncan is beginning to reach the downside of his career? What can they do to assure that they stay on top even when Duncan's skills start to decline?

Answer
Since Pop plays Duncan vary sparingly with his minutes (He always has for his entire career) Duncan could realistically be a real contender for another 4 to 6 years. Sure he will decline a bit but a declining Duncan is better than 95% of most bigs in the NBA. Keep in mind Duncan is younger than Garnett and has played fewer minutes. He's only one year older than Kobe, and once again has fewer minutes on his body. Minutes on a NBA player is like mileage on a car. After a while the car starts to break down from use, so will the body. Ginobili, even though he's a bit younger than Tim will need a back-up or a replacement soon and that is because of his play style. Manu has one speed and that is all-out. He throws his body around with reckless abandon. That is why the team calls him El-Contusion, they say by the end of the season he's on big bruise. That will catch up to him over time. Parker is still young, only 26. He is the nucleus of the new team when Duncan steps down. The constant chatter about the Spurs being to "OLD" right now just doesn't hold up, when you look at teams like Boston. All of their stars are "OLD" have been injury prone high minute players, yet no one says they are to "OLD". Boston couldn't win if they lost any two of their stars to injury. SA could still be a ELITE contender if they lost anyone but Duncan. The Spurs just played one of the other elite west teams and almost won, with the BIG 3 sitting out for the game plus they also sat Finley their forth leading scorer. I challenge LA to do the same. Sit Kobe, Gasol, Fisher, & Odom, and see how well the team does, the Spurs were in the game until the last 45 seconds on the clock with Denver, I doubt LA would do as well.

The Spurs are still a solid team. Only those who aren't true basketball fans would say or think otherwise. They will continue to be a viable threat to win a title for at least another 4 years. It could be longer, we don't know what may change for the team. Tiago Splitter will be joining the team next season, he has been hailed by EVERY pro scout as the best player in the euro-league. He could give Duncan that added big man punch the team needs. Splitter is a 6-11 big who can shoot the 3, as well a bang inside. If people are impressed with the game of Scola, consider that SA had his rights and gave them up because they knew splitter was better, what does that tell you? Then The team also drafted well with George Hill. those who don't watch Spurs games are only seeing Rose & Mayo, they are missing Hill. he's one of the most overlooked and probably going to be one of the best future PGs and overall players in the current rookie class. Last was the SA's free agent pick-up of Roger Mason jr. Mason has been nothing short of amazing. he has burned everyone from LA to Boston with his 3pt shooting. and he keeps getting better. (Keep in mind he's only 28). Sorry I forgot to mention Matt Bonner, mainly because everyone forgets about him until he drops 20+ points on you and 14 rebounds. he's been doing it all season long. He has developed into one of the most devastating shooters in the league. He should easily be near the top of the short list of players for "Comeback Player of the Year", he's also only 28.

What are the best places to visit in Denver, CO without a car?

Dangerous

I am going to visit Denver for 5 days from 9.14~9.18, but I don't have a car, are there any recommended attractions for a traveler like me without a car? (Better By Public Transportations.)
Also are there any possible ways for me to get to the nearby national park and Golden, CO by taking any other available transportations?
Thanks for your help!
I think I am going to stay in the hostel in Denver.
What do you think about the hostel in Denver, or what else place I can stay without spending a lot in Denver? (For 4~5 days)

Answer
There are quite a few things to do near downtown. 16th st mall, some art museums, the capital buildling, some fun restaurants, the zoo's not to far. You might want to check and see if there are any sporting events. The light rail will take you to some places out of the city. The only way I can think of that you could get to a national park is maybe by bus. You also might want to go up to Boulder, if there is a bus or something. When we came out to visit Denver, we found a really good deal on Expedia with every other night free, averaging out to being about $30 a night.

Honus Wagner Baseball Card Sold for $2.35M
'Holy Grail of Baseball Cards' Bought by Collector
By ANDREW GLAZER
AP Sports
LOS ANGELES (Feb. 26) - The "Holy Grail of baseball cards," the famous 1909 Honus Wagner tobacco card once owned by hockey great Wayne Gretzky, has sold for a record-setting $2.35 million, the seller of the card said Monday.

The buyer has only been identified as a Southern California collector.

There are about 60 of the tobacco cards in existence featuring the Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop, one of the first five players to be inducted in Baseball's Hall of Fame.

The seller Brian Seigel in 2000 paid a then-record $1,265,000 for the prize card, which is in better condition than the rest.

"This particular one was preserved in spectacular condition," said Joe Orlando, president of Professional Sports Authenticator of Newport Beach - the company that certified the authenticity of the card. "It's the Holy Grail of baseball cards."

Still, the Wagner cards are so rare that even those in much worse condition will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, Seigel said.

The others "you could stick in middle of the street and let cars drive over it through the day, take it in your hand and crumple it up, and it still would be a $100,000 card," said Seigel, CEO of Emerald Capital LLC, an asset management company, who lives in Las Vegas.

The tobacco cards used to be included in packs of cigarettes. Collectors believe Wagner's cards are so rare because he stopped allowing a cigarette company to use his image, fearing it would encourage children to smoke.

Nicknamed the "Flying Dutchman," Wagner was the National League batting champion in eight of his 21 seasons and finished his career with a lifetime .329 average. He retired in 1917 with more hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples steals than any National League player.

Answer
Personally, I am not a collector but my hubby is and has a baseball card collection. He has been looking for a baseball card with Mel Ott. He knows it's out there because he has seen it before.
I would love to be able to find it for him but I just don't know how to go about it.
I have heard about Honus Wagner and read of his ability to hit the ball so well in what was called the "dead ball era". He must have been one he.. of a player! Not that I would pay that price for his card though!

does any line out converter work for my car? or do i need one specific for it?

Yep, LLC's are universal. They make two channel and four channel units. If you want to amp the front and rear, you'd need a 4 channel. They're pretty cheap, $14 online:

A sports car accelerates from zero to 30 mph in 1.5 seconds. How long does it take for it to accelerate from zero to 60 mph, assuming the power of the engine to be independent of velocity and neglecting friction?

A) 2 seconds
B) 3 seconds
C) 6 seconds
D) 12 Seconds

explain.

Answer
With constant power, the force has to be inversely proportional to velocity (F x v = P) . So this is a little counterintuitive if you try to attack from the acceleration point of view...

You should take the approach of energy. See what is the ratio of kinetic energy at speed of 30 KMPH to speed of 60 KMPH . Ki netic energy is proportional to square of speed... , so you would get a certain ratio.

Since the power is constant, the time taken will be proportional to the kinetic energy. So, if the ratio of kinetic energy at 60 KMPH is to kinetic energy at 30 KMPH is N:1, the time taken will also have a ratio of N:1.

I don't want to give you the answer, just give you the principle to use, so you can work it out easily.

Hope it helps you, and you vote for the answer.

luxury cars 1940s on This 1940 Cadillac Series 62 convertible sports a custom body by ...
luxury cars 1940s image

Richard

Choose one of the two along with what car model and explain why.

Answer
A classic car easily wins, for aesthetic appeal: lots of the old cars simply had character and style.

The cars of the 1920s and 1930s bespoke luxury; even the "cheap" cars usually had some feature or aspect that was simply beautiful. Not all were practical, and maintenance costs could be extreme if the car was driven often or for "great" distances: the fenders would crack from vibration, etc.

The cars of the 1940s and 1950s were attractive for a different reason -- and, at least generally -- reliability, efficiency and utility were all greatly improved.

Power has always been in vogue, but the 1960s saw an explosion in its availability.

There are variations on these themes throughout automotive history: a decade-long generalization is far too broad to recognize developments within the decade, and many trends began in one decade and disappeared in another -- only to reappear in a later decade.

Engine swaps and other types of modification enable the possibility of retaining the style and luxury of earlier automobiles while adding the reliability, efficiency and environmental friendliness of modern technological improvements.

So, ignoring the possibility of making my own ride from scratch, I'd probably go with something like a 1971 Ford Boss 351 (or other trim level based on the 63R body code), or a 1994 Mazda RX-7 with the manual trans -- or, if I was feeling like a purist and I was looking for a family car, the 1989 Ford SHO Taurus.

In the case of the SHO, mine ran 14.86 @ 101.0, 142 mph sustainable cruising speed (also the top speed), got 28.3 mpg on a 6-stop run averaging 95 mph for 388 miles, and returned its best (highway) fuel economy of 36 mpg while commuting with the cruise set at 75 mph.

The combination of acceleration, speed, reliability and fuel economy in a car having great comfort and decent room (I consider the Taurus a "mid-size" car) makes the 1989 SHO my choice for the best car yet made. Reliability problems attributed to its transmission/transaxle were actually the fault of shoddy final assembly by US workers, who left the clips out of the shift linkage grommets.

The SHO's problem was exacerbated by the incompetence of Ford's dealer network to maintain Ford vehicles. Beyond that, the Goodyear tires were good for fuel economy but (in 1989) were insanely expensive as the only other car with that size tire was the 60k+ Acura NSX (which in those days was impressive for its performance), and they didn't last when driven hard.

In 1989, got a set of Kelly Springfield shoes for my SHO for less than 1/4 the price of a replacement set of Eagles; the Kellys had a lower speed rating, and they were so "grippy" that they actually lowered the top speed to 135 mph. Cornering improved with the Kellys, but they didn't give the warning that the Goodyears did: they were more of a "driver's tire."

Peak fuel economy with the Kellys dropped to 28 mpg during my commutes.

I test-drove the 1994 RX-7; it performed brilliantly (ever done a 1-g drift across an unguarded ramp having a 50+ foot drop at the edge of the shoulder-less pavement: it's a boaner-fide thrill!), but the Bose sound system was junk and the panels lying in the "rear seat" area (I forget what they were called) didn't fit anywhere close to properly, which made me suspicious of the overall quality of the car.

My Type I Volkswagen Beetle Sunroof Sedan (I think it was from the 1950s) had the most comfortable seats and the best ergonomics of any car I've ever been in, and no vehicle of which I have any firsthand knowledge has ever exceeded any reasonable estimation of possible performance to the degree evinced by the 1968 Ford F-100 LWB Styleside pickup with the 360 V8.

Having said all that, my favorite is still the 1971 Mustang Mach-1 or Boss 351, in metallic argent, with black stripes and the "ram air" hood (blacked-out scoop, blah blah), the front and rear spoilers. It's simply beautiful. Would I make improvements to it? Yes, and when I got done, it wouldn't be a 1971 car, anymore -- but that's what makes it a classic, to me.

Who introduced the taxi ?

Shangrala

Who introduced the taxi to Alaska?

Answer
Taxi -> a motor vehicle licensed to transport passengers in return for payment of a fare.
origin ->early 20th cent.: abbrev. of taxicab or taximeter cab
taxicab
Horse-drawn for-hire hackney carriage services began
operating in both Paris and London in the early 17th century. Royal proclamations in both cities regulated the number of carriages--the first example of taxicab regulation. In the 19th century, Hansom cabs largely replaced the older designs because of their improved speed and safety.

Although battery-powered vehicles enjoyed a brief success in Paris, London, and New York in the 1890s, the 1891 invention by German Wilhelm Bruhn of the taximeter (the familiar mechanical and now often electronic device that calculates the fare in most taxis) ushered in the modern taxi. (The "taxi" in "taximeter" is related to the word "tax," or "rate.") The first modern meter-equipped taxi was the Daimler Victoria, built by Gottlieb Daimler in 1897; the first motorized taxi company began operating in Stuttgart the same year.

Petrol powered taxis began operating in Paris in 1899, in London in 1903, and in New York in 1907. The New York taxis were imported from France by businessperson Harry N. Allen, who adapted the French word taxi-mètre and coined the word "taxicab" to describe the vehicles he was importing. In time, the shortened term "taxi" came into common usage. (Allen was also the first person to paint his taxis yellow, after learning that yellow is the colour most easily seen from a distance.)

The yellow taxicabs of New York City.Taxis proliferated around the world in the early 20th century. The first major innovation after the invention of the taximeter occurred in the late 1940s, when two-way radios first appeared in taxicabs. Radios enabled taxis and dispatch offices to communicate and serve customers more efficiently than previous methods, such as using callboxes. The next major innovation occurred in the 1980s, when computer assisted dispatching was first introduced.

There has generally been a legal struggle concerning the certification of motor vehicles to be taxis, which take much more wear than a private car does. In Britain, they were additionally required to meet stringent specifications, for example, as concerns turn radius, which resulted for a time in having only one make legally usable. In the US, in the 1930s the cabs were often DeSotos or Packards. General Motors offered a specialized vehicle for a time, named the General. The firm Checker came into existence then, and went out of business in the 1970s. Its cars were specially built to carry "double dates." But now New York City requires that all taxicabs be ordinary cars. They are usually large Fords. In the 1960s in Europe, Mercedes Benz and Peugeot offered diesel taxicabs. This form of engine is now quite common there

Taxis around the world

The advent of Taxi Cabs in the State of Queensland began about thirty years before the turn of the 20th century. This of course was long before motorised vehicles; in fact, horse drawn taxis had been used in Europe in the early 1800's. Australia adopted the use of them once cities were established, and in the case of Queensland, Brisbane introduced the first horse drawn taxis, which plied through out the city area. These also included Hansom Cabs, a more elaborate type with a closed in cabin for the passengers, having two small front doors and glass windows and their driver sitting high at the back. This type of vehicle was a standard type used in England. Its use was confined mainly for upper class people; such as Luxury motor vehicles which are operated as hire cars nowadays.

It is interesting to note that Hansom Cabs were still being used in Brisbane until 1935, and were emanating from a rank outside the Supreme Court in George Street.

Motor vehicle taxis were introduced into Australia not long after they were put into service in Great Britain and Europe.

First Motorised Taxis In Australia

In 1906, Sydney inaugurated motorised taxicabs, followed soon after by the other states including Queensland, in approximately, 1907.

The taxis of the period including a variety of types, with tourers and sedans, the latter were mainly French built Renaults, which were designed as taxis, not unlike the Hansom Cabs. Brisbane had a number of them that plied from the ranks outside Parliament House in Alice Street, and The Supreme Court in George Street. As applied to the Hansom Cabs, the Renaults catered mainly for gentlemen of standing, including Judges, Barristers and other notables. The drivers wore uniforms with leggings, the same as those worn by chauffeurs of horse drawn carriages.

It is worth mentioning at this stage, that each large taxi company had telephones installed in a steel box type cover at city and suburban ranks, direct to the switch control rooms in the city.

Although motor vehicle taxis were being used at the time, horse drawn taxis continued in use in Brisbane until the early 1920's, however, only a few. The country towns still had them a little longer.

The progress through the years included many types of tourers from the 1910 era until the late 1920's, with British and American cars predominating. Makes featured such names as Buick, Dodge, Talbot, Vauxhall, Saxon, Ford, Chandler, Studebaker, Chevrolet, Hupmobile, Whippet, Oldsmobile, Marmon, Pontiac, Hudson, Oakland, Erskine, Rugby, Essex and Chrysler.

Sedans were added during the late 1920's and included similar makes of vehicles.

This was the case with all cars being imported into Australia until World War II began. The American cars proved more suitable to Australian motoring conditions especially for taxi work.

General Motors Corporation built thousands in Australia, as did the other American companies including Ford and Chrysler.

Prior to a taxi company being formed in Queensland, owners of taxis simply had signs on the vehicles indicating "For Hire" painted on the side, front and rear.

Prior to 1924, all taxis plied for hire without a means of recording the mileage, other than the driver himself calculating the fare according to how far he drove his passengers. There was a fare scale, however, the driver could charge whatever he thought was nearest to the amount specified. This no doubt, brought about the introduction of meters.

Who was the race car driver killed when the front of his stock car was ripped off?

sports cars of the 80's image

bamakodake

I keep "seeing" this memory of a race on TV from the 80's or 70's. Not sure if it was ABC Sports. The stock cars were racing there was a wreck where the front of the race car was torn off. The passenger compartment was open, you could see the driver. The car was spinning and was backwards, the driver looking at the field coming up on him, when another car slammed into him. What race was that? Who was the driver killed and who was the driver that slammed into him?

Answer
The wreck I believe you are referring too is the the crash in the Sportsman race in 1969 when Massachusetts driver Don MacTavish crashed coming off turn 4. I believe it was lap 7 and he was driving a Gene White Ford or Comet when it started to rain. The wreck happened right in front of me. I always felt the caution should have been waved the lap before.... the car that hit him I believe was driven by Sam Sessions.

Did the car Vector first come out in 1989?

Jesse Mach

I read that the Vector sports car didn't come out until 1989, but I could have sworn when I was a little kid in the early 80's I saw posters for the Vector car at my local five and dime store. Am I imagining this?

Answer
Your not imagining, there was a prototype/concept model W2 that came out in the late 70's. Production began in 1989

Check out this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_Motor

That will probably answer most of your questions about one of the best looking cars ever made

What is the coolest sports car under 100k?

sports cars jaguar on THE ALL-NEW JAGUAR XK | Speed:Sport:LifeSpeed:Sport:Life
sports cars jaguar image

Dr. Biz

This includes used ferraris, and brand new sports cars, dodge vipers, corvettes etc. Basically the question is if I had 100k what would be the best sports car to buy, and since there really is no where to use the full speed of a sports car it's basically the wow factor i'm interested in.

Answer
Saleen S302 Sterling Extreme comes right into your budget. It may be a 'Stang but Saleen definitely know how to tune their 'Stangs. Those Vipers and 'Vettes will be eating your dust on a racetrack. Also there is the Lotus Exige as others have stated but being a track car, even the air-con and floor mats are optional extras, and the semi-racing slicks would wear a s***-load quicker than normal tyres. They're also awkward to get in and out of. The Toyota VVT-i engine is a blast though. Steve Saleen has also made a new business tuning Dodge, his first one is the SMS 570 Challenger. You could also go for a BMW M6, Jaguar XKR, and a Porsche 911 Carrera. The possibilities are nearly endless.

Is a Jaguar XK8 sports car a good fit for someone who is 6' 4" tall ?

MIKE

I am a big guy and am wondering what is the best sports car for big people. I like the looks of the XK8, but I read a review that said it was cramped. Any other suggestions from the Big Guys out there?

Answer
Ferrari or carrera if you can afford it. Or anything American (considered American) non-convertible like the GTO, Viper GTS, shelby mustang, etc. Maybe an m5 or m6. You won't fit in a lotus exige if that's what you're asking.

You'll probably fit in the Jaguar it's just a p.o.s. mechanically and electrically...you don't really want to touch a car with those kinds of problems if you plan on driving it hard.

We are looking for something different. We have done the zoo, Grants Farm, Science Center, Arch, River Cruise, and Ballgames. He likes sports, games, things like that. Any huge game area or something like that, with sports type activities for a 6 year old? Or anything for a 6 year old.

Answer
As far as St. Louis City is concerned... the bowling hall of fame is really cool and I think the Cardinals baseball museum is attached to that. The City Museum is fantastic, there is no kid/adult in the world that wouldn't love that place. The botanical garden has a childrens garden which is great in the spring and summer.
In St. Louis County there is the museum of transportation that has trains and cars your can explore and lots of room to run. The magic house in Kirkwood is opening a brand new wing this summer which is an awesome place for kids 10 and under to explore and learn. Laumeier Sculpture Park is cool that are a lot of giant scuptures for children to run on and a lot of land for children to explore and find cool sculptures. The Mills Mall off HWY370 has a nascar speed park with gocarts as well as glow in the dark put put golf. There is also Swing Around Fun Town to the south in Fenton which I believe is off 141 has lots of games, batting cages, go carts, bumper boats, and lots of put put golf.

I hope this helps, good luck on your trip!

What is the general perception of public transit in Portland?

Jimbo

I'm really, really, really, really considering relocating to Portland, and I want to know what the public transit system is like. I currently live in St. Louis where urban sprawl is a major problem, and the public transit system is very poor. Our light rail runs through mainly blighted parts of the city, and bus lines don't go anywhere that you would want to go... Also, transit in St. Louis has a bad wrap -- only low-life people ride it and crime on the system is horrible. (Not really the case.) Anyway, here in St. Louis, people are so dependent on their cars, and I want to try to get away from that. Can anyone tell me what the general perception of the Portland transit system is? Does anyone and everyone from all different walks of life ride transit? I'm asking this, because if/when I do end up moving to Portland, I would like to ditch one of my two cars. (One for me and one for my partner. We'll keep the Hybrid.)

Answer
I am a transportation planner and I travel all over the US to help cities who want to be just like Portland. Portland is the model for transit. As another person wrote, there are buses, light rail (which runs into the suburbs and out to the airport), a streetcar system, an aerial tram, a commuter rail system under construction (Wilsonville to Beaverton), and the best bike lane system in the US. Best of all, the systems are all inter-coordinated (stops, schedules, tickets), so it is a seamless system. I have lived in Portland, San Francisco and Washington DC - all of which have good transit systems - but Portland is by far the best because the funding is much better and the system is kept in excellent repair and people of all classes ride the system. I have a wonderful little sports car and I have to take it out on the freeway every few weeks to keep the battery charged because I never drive it!!

TriMet, which is the regional transportation agency, has a great website and you can log on, tell them your starting and ending point and when you want to leave, or arrive, and they will instantly "plan" your trip for you, using all the transit modes, if necessary. Also, your ticket works on all modes!! Isn't that the handiest!

Also, many people walk in Portland because the blocks are very short and their is lots of sidewalk activity (cafes where people sit outside, etc.).

You will not find a better transit system anywhere in the US; Portland is the model everyone else is trying to emulate. I know, because my job is to try to help them!!

What is a good looking car that is reliable?

I am looking to buy a car that is under $10000 that looks good for a teenage guy that wants a sports car look but doesn't want the insurance bill. I want something that just looks good that is good and is reliable. Also take into consideration that I am very tall so I need the leg room.

Answer
Consider the 1999-2002 Honda Accord Coupe. It was, and still is, a good looking car, it is a Honda which means it will last, and the price will be decent here in 2009. The only thing is - is that it only has 200hp, which was good at the time, but today is something more of a joke. That said, if you want more power it is a Honda so you can buy cheap power by way of a turbo, etc. Another option from that time is also the last generation Honda Prelude which still looks amazing but has the same HP issue.

Alternatively, the Subaru WRX was released around that time so look into those. However, personal opinion... the first generation WRX with those circular headlights were ugly as sin. The Maxima from the same time was mentioned, at that series came with 258hp so it will be rather quick and it still looks decent.

Hope that helps.

What is a good sports car under 10000$?

wow

I am 19 years old and i am looking for a fast car. Before you tell me i am to young for a fast car, i been driving since i was 12, i lived mexico for a while. So with that in mind, am looking for reliable, fast car under 10000 dollars.Oh, and if possible v4, or even V6. NO V8 OR mustangs.

Answer
Go on Craigslist and get yourself a 3000gt, very nice looking and sounding cars. Best Model for speed is the VR-4 in NA or you can import a 94' GTO straight from Japan :)
Only downside is that its a little heavier but its safer to drive since its not that plastic crap that most cars are made out of now adays. If you want it lighter just remove some stuff and change the exterior to carbon fiber.

VR-4s in my area run from $3,000-$7,000
Eclipses are more modern but 3000gt's are the ****, Twin turbo allday

What makes these car brands diffrent from eachother?

CatsForeve

Hi I am working a project about Germany's car brands, and I was wondering: "What makes these car brands different from one and another?" These are the brands that I'm working on:
Audi
Mercedes Benz
BMW
Opel
Volkswagen
Porsche
What makes these car brands different from each other in: Gas Millage Wise, Eco-Friendly Wise, Popular-Wise, and Efficient wise. I don't need to know the prices, of the brands. What makes each and individual of these brands special in their own way? Which one of these car brands do you prefer the most and why? Which one of these brands are the most popular in: Germany, the USA, or World Wide? If you could list the TOP 3 Out of the 6 brands that are given, which 3 would you pick?

Answer
Porsche is obvious. It started out making race cars only, then they made sports cars for production for the next 50+ years until they decided to make the Porsche Cayenne SUV out of nowehere and now the Panamera sedan.

Porsche makes the best German sports cars and some of the best sports cars in the world. Ignition keys are traditionally on the left side of the steering wheel because in the old days, car races started off on foot. The racers ran to their cars, got in, started the car and drove away. With the key on the left side, they were able to use their right hands to shift into 1st gear, saving them 1-2 seconds of time in the start of the race. Also, they typically use a lighter orange color for the interior lights.

Volkswagen. VW was created under order of Adolf Hitler, who wanted a peoples car to be used for everyone and everything including war. Volkswagen translates to peoples car. He ordered Ferdinand Porsche(later to create his own brand Porsche) to design a car that can float in water, is efficient, cheap, reliable, and light weight, therefore the Volkswagen Beetle, or Bug, was born. VW made the Beetle for at least 30 years with virtually an unchanged design, much like Jeep did with the Wrangler. The 1970's made them more popular because of certain cars. The VW Van or bus, which was popular with hippies, and the VW Rabbit and Rabbit GTI(now known as Golf GTI). The Rabbit/Golf came to be known as one of the worlds best selling cars and Europes top selling car in the 2000's. The GTI is considered the original hot hatch. Because of it, cars like the Honda Civic Si, Mazdaspeed 3, Nissan Sentra SE-R, and Lancer Ralliart exist today. During a time of the oil crises, the Rabbit GTI was the solution for muslce cars. Lightweight, nimble handling, small engine, good speed. Today, Volkswagen is one of the most modified cars in the world with the largest fanbase. Most modified Volkswagens are Golfs and Golf GTI's. VW later bought Audi, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Seat, and some of Porsche. At this time, Volkswagen is #2 as the largest car company in the world. In the U.S., they are not as popular. But in Europe and Germany, they are very popular.

BMW uses dark orange interior lights. BMW was a motorcycle company and made smaller cars like the BMW Isetta. Later on, they started getting involved in racing and created more luxurious premium cars and the BMW M division of high performance cars. They are well known for being some of the sportiest luxury cars with their renowned hanlding and steering feel. Every BMW car ever made has the same lima beans front grill, their trademark design. The M division of BMW is what really made them famous.

Audi is well known for the Quattro. The Quattro is the first All Wheel Drive car and the first AWD car used in Rally races. The AWD system was named after the car so now it is called Quattro AWD. Because of Audi, cars like the Subaru Impreza WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo exist. Audi is famous for having the best AWD systems and best interiors in terms of ergonomics. Everything is in the right place. All of their cars are luxury cars with engines developed for some performance and speed.

Mercedes Benz. Karl Benz is the founder of Mercedes Benz and the inventor of the gasoline engine. He created the first gas powered car. At that time in the 1800's, cars were powered by steam engines. Ever since then, Mercedes have been cars offered with the latest and newest technology. Being the first German brand and the most luxurious and expensive brand for many years made it a popular well known brand.

I don't know much about Opel except that is it owned by GM, an American company, and that Opel do not sell many cars. They do not sell any cars at all in the U.S. But the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice is a copy of the Opel GT.

For me:
1. Porsche
2. VW
3. Audi
4. BMW
5. Mercedes
6. Opel

what impact did the cold war have on the american foreign policy in the 50s or 60s?

Answer
The Cold War was America's foreign policy in the 1950's and 1960's and 1970's and 1980's and 1990's and on thru to this very day. The problem is the USA has had a crisis of identity since Russia long ago ended the Cold War. Mitt Romney was<and other Republicans still do>wanted to put missle systems in Poland. The USA has gone mad and showed it's shame to the world ie. 2 Gulf
Wars, a War in Afghanistan, and the destabilization of Libiya, Tunis, Syria, and Egypt at the cost
100's of 1000's of lives - mostly civilians. During the 1950's the USA organized the overthrow of several democratic governments throughout the world and installed fascist dictatorships...which it still seems to do be doing. In Vietnam the USA killed over 3 million people mostly civilian in barbaric campaigns as bad or worse than anything ever cooked up by Hitler or Joseph Stalin. The USA even supported Lon Nol and then Pol Pot as ostensible wedge powers against China and Vietnam. The Cold War was started by the USA as early as 1917, and to this day it continues as a 'perpetual war' against terror.'

In fact, Donald Rumsfeld and Bush both spoke repeatedly of a New World Order in which a Perpetual War on Terror would replace the Cold War. That agenda has been repeatedly expressed
by US Right Wing think tanks who leaped at the idea of encircling Russia...to create a world-dominating empire. The problem was that their ideas were 1)hideously fascist and militaristic 2)strategically invalid and a threat to the USA's own national security 3)Hostile to the 3rd world and
4)alienating to the powers of Europe and Russia 5)grossly ignorant of China's economic leverage and military power 6)shortsighted to such issues as open relations with Cuba and the reunification of Korea and 7)blind to the problems of Central and South America including Mexico in terms of
their growing needs for radical reform and the revival of socialism is those countries to address those problems.

Currently the USA is far out on the limb high up in a mighty tree. There is the sound of sawing.
The problem is that the USA's Republican Party is sawing off the mighty limb upon which the USA sits. It has identified this rotting limb as the very problem of America. When the USA and this limb come falling down - it will be due to the Republican neglect of 1)the affordable education of its citizens 2)the lack of a cogent and efficient universal healthcare system 3)the lack of a social welfare system that is vital and strong like that of Northern Europe's 4)a militarism that has basically killed millions of people all over the world for the sake of greed, strategic game playing, and its own fascistic ideology 5)the creation of a wicked callous caste system that no longer unites america under one umbrella of loyalty called theamerican dream...but causes americans to more and more look elsewhere for freedom and opportunity. 6) The final nails of the coffin will be America's economic losses to the dynamic rising economies of Russia, Brazil, India, Japan, Korea, and Europe, and of course China...who can all come together and offer the people of the world a better, new, deal of humanity and human rights.

When my Chinese sports car is faster and more reliable than a corvette, but half the price...and when my Russian digital camera and laptop beats microsoft, and when Brazil puts out a $7k economy car that beats anything made in the USA...the game is over. The USA gave up its manufacturing base in the 1960's/70's and can't get it back. It's gone. The USA sacrificed its manufacturing base in its Cold War fight against Russia and China...The problem is that it can't get it back. Like Britain losing India and all its Empire in WW2, the USA simularily lost its muscle and empire in the Cold War. The USA can build more aircraft carriers...BUT that sort of spending is now robbing the USA of strength.

There will come a day when young American children will sit glued to their computer screens watching the first people land on Mars. They will be Russian cosmonauts. There will be a day when
people speak of the latest and greatest Chinese, Indian and Brazilian and Russian products... There
will be a day when the morality of Japan and the writings of the East overwhelm the Western mind.
There will be a day when the Cold War is truely truely over everywhere in the world except in the hateful minds of jealous, unintellectual, militarized Americans.

If you know that little about turbos and want a "custom muffler" you really shouldn't be modding cars. $5k for the turbo kit (not a Chinese knockoff kit), $7k for a shop to install it, and you won't even hit 200hp. Congratulations... Buy a Grand Prix, Mustang, Camaro, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, something that has at least 200hp stock will be way cheaper than putting $10k into a Honda. You'll need $20k+ before that car even starts going fast if you go the turbo route.

Do an engine swap instead. Try a B18 engine, you can get one installed for under $3k parts and labor and you'll get a better hp increase than a low boost kit.

And you can run more than 4lbs of boost, you can probably run 8. Still, you aren't going to hit 200hp or be able to pass even the most ill equipped sports cars.
