Economical and reliable car?

Contemplat

Subaru, Honda or Toyota or ???? Thanks for your input!
Mostly I would drive it and mostly city and some highway miles.
Also has to be good in snow.

Answer
Honda receives the highest ranking among non-luxury brands in our firm's latest Initial Quality Study, which measures new-vehicle quality after the first 90 days of ownership. Models that are tops in initial quality at the segment level include subcompacts such as the Honda Fit, the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent. The compact quality leader this year is the Honda Civic, followed by the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. Among compact crossovers and utilities, which may do well in snowy weather conditions, the Honda CR-V earns the highest ranking followed by the Nissan Xterra and the Hyundai Tucson.

All three of the brands that you mention rank among the top 10 nameplates in terms of dependability on our latest J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study, which measures customer satisfaction with the reliability or dependability of 3-year-old models. Honda in fact ranks in the top five along with two other non-premium brandsâBuick and Mercury. Toyota ranks No. 6 and Subaru, No. 9.

Models that rank at the top of their segments in dependability after three years of ownership include the subcompact Scion xA. The Hyundai Accent and Chevrolet Aveo also rank among the three best compact models in terms of reliability. The three models with the fewest problems in the compact category are the Honda Civic, Toyota Prius Hybrid and Toyota Corolla. If you prefer crossovers or utility vehicles that may be good choices in snow, the most reliable compact models after three years of ownership are the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V and the Honda Element.

Do luxury cars depreciate faster than average cars?

Jason Sant

I am planning to buy a car. Being a business major and being the thrifty person that I am I would never buy a brand new car because once you drive it out the dealership it already depreciated. A one to two year old car is an ideal buy. My economics professor brought up a good point that luxury cars are cheaper to maintain than normal cars. I live in Hawaii which was ranked the worst state to own a car because maintainance is so expensive.

Answer
I would suggest that you use a shopping tool like Yahoo Autos. Just because it is a luxury car does not mean it depreciates less. Some drop in value faster then a lead ball in a clear sky.
I just pulled up a Ford Taurus and a BMW 5 series. Now the 5 series may not be a true luxury car but it is an up scale car. The BMW depreciates almost 30000 dollars (63%) in the first five years, while the Ford only 15000 dollars (48%). Now there may be cars that break this trend'.With the Ford only costing 26600 dollars to begin with is seems that the total cost of the car is almost free when compared to owning a BMW which looses more in depreciation then the Ford costs new.
So do some study, my gut feeling is that it takes a lot of money to buy a car that will keep its resale value up and then it will only be a percentage think. Lets face it, if a car costs 100000 dollars and it only depreciates 10% of its value in a given year, that is still a lot of money!
Sorry, I miss read the question, even if BMW throws in maintanance for free, it takes a lot of maintanance to make up for the extra 15000 dollars worth of loss on depreciation.

A sports car, two-seater car that starts with R? Fancy car?

annabelle

It's not a Rolls-Royce, I know that. I remember it was spelled something like Ragoni or Radoni or something... It had an R and and A... I do not remember but it's bothering me because I saw it on the road the other day and I loved it! If you have ANY guesses as to what it is, please tell me! It's like a two seater that has like round edges and the one I saw was gray, and like typical sports car look? Thanks so much!

Answer
RUF, makes some exotics (http://www.ruf-automobile.de/en/en-index.php)
Of course there is also Renault (http://www.renault.com/en/Pages/home.aspx)
I don't think you were looking at a RX anything, but it could have been a RX7 (RX8's are four seaters). Which are made by Mazda.

Petrol R/C Car - Which to buy? (UK)?

ZAMtendo

What is the best, most value for money petrol R/C car to buy in the UK? I'd like to make it a hobby, what is a good place to begin, and which should be my first R/C car?

Thanks!

Answer
Well, if your starting out into the world of RC, i would strongly suggest you start electric. There are 4 types of engine that run RC cars. Electric, electric brushless, nitro, and petrol. Electric tend to be your cars that can do 20-30 mph, are good for throwing round jumps, take very little maintenance and aren't too expensive.
Brushless electric motors are a new technology, and therefore quite expensive. However, brushless electric has become a reall challenger for nitro in speed and power, though as with all things on batteries, you can only run them for a limited time. Brushless cars run from 35-70 mph, depending on your motor and setup.
Nitro is the most popular choice about. A small single cylinder engine running on a nitro/oil fuel mix. A starter nitro car will do about 40 mph. The thing with nitro cars however, is that they take alot of maintenance and love, and alot of time to get going when you first get them. If you do decide nitro, get your hobby shop to adjust all the needles, and run it in for you. But make sure you take the time to watch them do it, and read some how toos online.
Final petrol. Bigger two stroke engines, very like those in a petrol lawnmower. These cars are the biggest you can buy, run on actually petrol, and are a very limited class. I dont know alot of people who own them, and there isn't a class to race them at my track. (I personally wouldn't buy petrol). They need a whole lot of space, and similar maintenance to nitro.

Right, after that rant, ill give you a couple of examples.

Nice starter nitro cars; http://www.speedymodels.com/nitro-sport-33-p.asp
Traxxas is a good brand, and this car has been specifically designed for a begginer in mind.(It's offroad, will give about 40 mph, at top performance)
http://www.rccarsandtrucks.co.uk/564_1_105551793.html
is one you can grab from your high street shop.

Please remeber with nitro that you need a glow start. (Which heats the glowplug etc,) As well as the car, and these tend to come seperately.

Some good stock electric: http://www.rccarsandtrucks.co.uk/1248_1_105820349.html
Is super cheap and cheerfull, will do about 15-20 mph. A great begginers rc car.

http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/item/TRX-5805-Traxxas-Slash-Pro-2WD-Short-Course-Truck-RTR__2697/
A friend owns one of these and loves it. You'l get a good 30 mph out of it, and its totally waterproof. See the you tube videos. A great buy imho.

http://www.nitrotek.co.uk/H94107.htm I own this one, and love it. My first RC car, virtually indestructable. Will do about 25 mph, maybe just 30 with a better battery.

If you do buy one of these, make sure you get the battery and charger thrown in, most high street shops will be willing to haggle.
I would really suggest considering a stock electric for your first RC.

Finally, electric brushless.
I own and like http://www.nitrotek.co.uk/A2012T.htm
40 mph plus, but takes alot of control. I trashed mine first time i took it out, as i really underestimated the acceleration.

http://www.rccarsandtrucks.co.uk/1962_1_1342158.html
Is a good car. Though you wont get the battery and charger thrown in, so you could end up with about £350 worth of bills.

If you want to try brushless on the cheap, i own; http://www.nitrotek.co.uk/A2003T.htm
It's like a tiny jack russel, about 35 mph, and fantastic fun.

Whatever you decide, always read the instructions, and always take it easy first time out. If you have any problems, model shops will help, and there are always many the forum for this sorta thing.

Have fun!

Sport Car!!!!!!?

FootballFr

I am 15 and in a couple of months will have my license. Right now I own a 1997 F150, around 250,000 miles, we did give it a new engine about 3 years ago, also it's in a good condition. I am thinking about selling it because I really want something sporty. How much could I get out if it? Also what is a good car or truck, not to expensive and is sporty like I want? I have looked at Camaros, Firebirds and thought about buying a Chevy S10 and sporting it up a little. I really like smaller trucks better. Try to give me a list of cars that might be good. thanks.

Answer
As for the price of your truck, you can check with KBB.com. You can check off all the options (etc.) and it will give you a fairly accurate going rate in your area.

As for buying another truck, you're only 15 so you many not know, but everybody is having trouble paying for gas. If you were to get a truck (or suv) you will have to get a job, just to pay for gas - to get to the job.

I would suggest you think really hard and ask people around you who has trucks and SUV about the cost of paying for gas.

Good Luck...

P.S. My civic gets 41 MPG on the hwy. I ain't hurt'n for gas money.

I'm looking for a first car. I'm seventeen. About the 1000 - 9000 $ limit and under 150 000 miles.
DO you know any helpful sites except e-bay craigslist carmax yahoo and autotrader??? Also if posible do you know where i can find bank owned vehicles?

Can you advice me with what to buy and what not to. I'm looking for a car that can get me at least 4 years.

Answer
If you really want to impress go for a cheap sports car. I found a '91 Camaro for $1000 locally. It had 100,000 miles on it but it ran fine. I got a '94 Mustang GT for my first car. Another option would be to look for a used police car auction. They go really cheap at those and you can usually get a fast, decent car.

If you're going for a more luxurious/economic route, I would suggest a Pontiac Grand Prix. About 25-30 mpg and a decent look. You could definitely get a 2000-2003 for under $9000 (probably looking at 4000ish, depending on mileage) and those are nice cars. Ultimately, go with what suits you.

I don't understand what the big deal with exotic sports cars that are over $100,000? is?

coreyrules

What makes them so great? They are a lot more expensive than 8-cylinder sports cars with V8s that can still go from 0 to 60 quickly such as the Camaro Z28, Firebird Trans AM, and the Mustang GT.

I mean come on! You can get all that souped-up 8-cylinder power you want with something like one of those cars I just mentioned for UNDER $25,000, yet there are people who spend a much as a quarter million on some Ferrari or Lamborghini, or even over $1,000,000 on a freakin' ENZO Ferrari. What?, do they have steering wheels made out of diamonds? Are the pistons made out of 24 karat gold? Do they come with some small supercomputer with other features like that black Trans Am "Kit" from "Knight Rider"?

They are no better in power and performance than a souped-up 6 or 8 cylinder and aren't as fast as stock cars and Formula 1 cars.

So what makes these Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and other expensive sports cars such a big deal, and so expensive????

Answer
It's just like wine. Extremely expensive wines are not better wines, they are just rarer. People want to stand out in a crowd. If your car has a distribution of 1 million that's hard to do. If your car has a distribution of 200, then thats cool (to them, not my opinion).

Also remember that people that buy these cars are typically rich enough that an extra $100,000 is a drop in the bucket. So they buy $200,000.00 cars and $2,000.00 shoes and drink $200.00 wines, but who cares, really?

Least expensive sports cars/coupes?

Lmf96

I'm getting a car soon. I love the coupe style. And sports cars. I am a girl.

My dream car is a Chevelle, but it's too expensive.

Are there any cars (I would buy used, not new) out there that have the coupe style but less than $13,000? Probably not, but I figured I should ask here anyway. I keep looking on KBB.com for cars but haven't found a perfect match....if there even is one.

Any help is appreciated

Answer
A Honda Civic Si us a great choice for a cheap sports car. It may be a problem because it is only available with a manual transmission. Another car is a Mazda Miata or MX-5. I would also recommend a Gonda Prelude, but watch out for cars that tuners have got to. Alway look for a car that has less than 100,000 miles.

Sporty cars for under 6k?

cody

What are some used sport/sporty looking cars for under 6 grand?

Answer
Whatever you choose just be aware that it will be highly used at that price, so be sure you are comfortable with the maintenance a 6000 dollar sports car will require. If it were me, I would source out an early 90's mercedes 500 SL. Find a well documented one with the servce records and make sure the top goes up and down. A used car that has all service records up to date since new means it was well taken care of 9 out of 10 times.

Question about luxury cars?

Eric

So a couple of friends of mine are trying to argue with me that Acura is a great luxury brand. Now I tried to explain to them that it's barely a luxury brand by usual standards and that Audi, Lexus, and Cadillac are far superior. What do you think?

Answer
I have owned an Acura and own an Audi. Acura is a luxury brand. Acura is the luxury brand of Honda. Lexus is the luxury brand of Toyota. Cadillac is the luxury brand of General Motors. End of discussion. Each brand has several models called entry level or the cheap models to purchase. Even Mercedes-Benz has entry level luxury models. There are differences in the luxury brand companies and this can change from year to year or even model to model. Car making is rather difficult. Audi has a reputation for quality issues and customer service. I know first hand having problems with my car I have never experienced with another. One perfect car was my, entry level, 1997 Acura CL. I wanted a manual transmission, cloth seats car. I had to wait for it but I got it. 5 years later I sold it and never had any issues with this car. I purchased a 2001 Audi TT at that time and I have had typical problems for Audi that I have never had with any other car. I have had great ownership experiences as well with Infinity, the luxury brand of Nissan. An I-30 and a QX4 SUV. Both excellent cars with excellent customer service. If you want my recommendation, I suggest Acura, Infinity and Lexus over German brand luxury cars any day. Best of luck.

What are the best cars for the price range of: $150,000 - $200,000?

Dee

Im looking for a really nice car. Can someone give me a shortlist of some sports cars, luxury cars. No SUVs, or trucks, just cars like Bentley, Ashton Martin and stuff like that.

Answer
There are a great set of cars for that much money and it doesnt matter if you have the money or not, the point of this website is just to ask questions not always to get real world advice.

so for a pure luxury sedan, your best bet right now is the 2014 Mercedes Benz S63.
the latest S class is an amazing feat of engineering and design. It has features that not even Bentley nor Rolls Royce can match even at higher prices.
here are a couple of the features that make it great.
first, the heating. many luxury cars have heated and cooled seats and steering wheels, but the S class also has heated door panels center console and gear selector lever to make sure that everything you can touch in winter is nice and warm.
it also has massaging seats with a huge range of massage types ranging from invigorating to relaxing and hot stone massages. The air conditioning also has additional fragrances which are designed to not stick to cloth and dissipate quickly. the most amazing features on the S class are on the outside though. it has a huge array of sensors (sonar and cameras) all around the car that monitor the road and traffic to keep you safe. the car monitors where other cars and will keep you from merging into other cars. it can also scan the surface of the road in front of it and prepare the suspension for an extremely soft and comfortable ride. there are also other safety features but they are too many to list. right now, neither bentley nor rolls royce have as many luxury features on any of their cars. on top of that, the S 63 also comes with a very powerful V8 engine that makes it fast (when the S65 comes out it will be even more powerful).

if you want a sports car, you can go through several routes.
you can go for straight out speed in which case the Nissan GT-R is the fastest car you can get for that much money.

or you can go for a more fun car. (fun in a sports car means the ability to drift and do donuts with ease)
the SRT Viper is an amazing sports car for this sort of thing. it's huge engine has more than enough power to get the large rear wheels spinning with ease. add in a manual transmission which in the supercar world is dying and you get a massively fun car.

if you want to go with something thats a bit more classy bu still sporty then an Audi R8 V10 Plus has good speed and more classy looks. it also has a Lamborghini derived V10 engine which sounds great (its actually among the best sounding engines made). the new dual clutch gearbox makes it amazing to drive in town and a beast on a track. the R8 also has a magnetic adjustable suspension to make it as comfortable as possible on roads and still very stiff when in sport mode for the best handling possible. the AWD system from audi also means that you get great grip in all weather conditions. (there are many videos of R8s going on winter drives over snow and ice)

if an R8 is still too uncomfortable for road trips (lack of trunk space and a stiff suspension) then an aston martin V8 vantage offers a much softer suspension with a larger trunk for a nice road trip with a friend. it's not as fast as an audi R8 but it's still faster than most things on the road. Aston Martins also have among the best designs in the world. they are not the fastest, nor are they the most comfortable, most luxurious or even the most reliable but they still win many awards year after year for being cool.

for the purpose of being thorough, im also going to mention the Range Rover Sport. it has a luxurious and large interior but it also offers amazing off road capabilities with an 11.2 inch ground clearance. ( for comparative purposes the off road purpose built toyota FJ and Jeep wrangler and even the Ford F-150 Raptor all have less than 10 inches of ground clearance). There is also an optional 5.0L supercharged engine that lets it accelerate from 0-100 kph (63 mph) in 5.3 seconds for serious highway performance when you want it.

I'd also like to point out that while many cars of that price are just that expensive because of the branding, there are also no cars that can match their performance and features for lower prices so while it is true that the branding is a lot to pay for, it's also true that there are not many options.

if you really care about efficiency with pricing, the best cars out there are the Nissan GT-R for speed and Hyundai Equus for luxury.

Need New Car With Better Gas Mileage?

dreams2Bte

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavour XLS. It is horrible on gas mileage. I drive alot due to my work. However, I love the benefits of an SUV. Primarily the fact that you are "sitting up high." I am short and this helps me see better. With gas prices what they are and no predictions of them going down I cannot afford to put gas in this any longer. It takes me $80 to fill up and it only last about 3 days. I am going to trade it for a car (sedan) but I want some advice as to what is a good car to look at after being used to an SUV for so long? What has good gas mileage? I don't want a "grandma" car either but I don't want a sports car. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Answer
It would be nice if you gave us a price range and what kind of MPG you wanted. There are tons of cars out there so you need to be a bit more specific or people will give you a bunch of random answers that wont apply to you.

What the gas mileage for an 8-cylinder sports car such as this?

Q. A 2002 Camaro Z28 with an 5.7 liter LSI 305 HP engine?

I'm looking to get an 8-cylinder sports car, but I hope that it's gas mileage is not a bad 18 MPG for the highway. I hope it's at least 25 MPG for the highway or so.

Answer
You could get even higher than 30 mpg in that car. At least on a cross country trip with cruise control on.

I got 29 mpg in my 95 Camaro Z28, which has a similar V8 engine that gets worse miles per gallon.

Really depends how you drive it though, how many hills you have, type of tires, general tune up condition and about 99999999999999999999 different things.

Trying to find a cheap sports car with good snow traction?

Matt

I'm currently looking at buying a 2000 Mustang as my first car, but considering it has RWD, I've had second thoughts about getting it because of the snow traction...Is there any other good looking sports cars that handle good in the snow that maybe, if used, would be under 4,000$?

Answer
There are a couple AWD sports cars out there...but not for your budget.

You need to decide if a sports car is something you really want...before you spin out into a guardrail on ice.

For $4K, it may not be the time to be looking at sportscars/muscle cars at all.

If all else fails, look at older Subaru Imprezas. They have surprising specs and AWD.

What is worse; driving lowrider or sports car in snow?

Parris

Answer
TRICK QUESTION ! ! !

Sports car is worse. Although I did drive an MGB Roadster through 5 Canadian Winters.

You can put snow tires on a lowrider - push a button - and you have ample ground clearance. A sports car's ride height is fixed and cannot be altered.

Can I bring an American sports car to Italy, France, or Germany?

Dylan

My dad might be getting a job in Dubai ( I doubt it though), and my family may move to Italy, France, or Germany to be closer, and to experience another country. My mom has a 2000 Ford Mustang V6 convertible that we are thinking about bringing if we do go. She don't want to buy a car over there for the year or two he will be in Dubai. We are thinking about trading the mustang for a 1998-2002 Pontiac Trans Am though. And if we can bring it, how much would it likely be? Thanks!!! :-)

Answer
Not worth the bother or expense. With the cost of gas in the countries you listed you would NOT want an American built car there unless you are filthy rich.

In most cases you would also have to have parts for routine maintenance or repairs shipped from the U.S. Just buy a cheap European car.

If you still planning on doing this keep the Mustang. There are more Mustangs around than Pontiacs. making it easier to get parts if needed.

What would be an ideal sports car for me?

Elysian

I've been looking into cars lately, just want to know what you guys think. I'm a guy, my 17th birthdays coming up next week, live in California, looking for a sports car. Preferably 2 door coupe with 4-5 seats, used, manual transmission, <11,000, year 2000 or higher, black or red, something <70k miles, and looks like a sick car.
This is going to be a car for pleasure shared between my dad and I.

Thanks, looking forward to seeing your suggestions
Forgot to say, I've been driving for a year and a half and have experience, so this won't be my first car. And i do not want any type of mustang as they are overrated and way too common. Looking for a unique car.

where can i find the accurate replica sport cars ?

Answer
There are several companies in the USA who build replica sports cars like the Shelby Cobra and Ford GT40, or custom body kits that allow you to modify your Mustang or Camaro or other small car to look like a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. You can build your own car from a kit, or buy one that's ready to drive home.

Do a google search for "Kit Cars" and you'll find more information than you'll ever want.

Cheap "exotic" sports car?

[daniel]

So Lamborghinis are cool. We all know this. But I'm a poor little white boy, and I was wondering, what cool NON-MAINSTREAM (this means you, Mustang) sports cars are there, that don't cost the deed to my house and 12 years of slave labor?*

In other words, under $100,000

Answer
If I had $100,000 to spend, these are some of the cars I would consider:

Acura NSX (Used)

Ariel Atom

Aston Martin Vantage (Used)

Audi R8 (Used)

Audi RS4

Audi S5

Bentley Continental GT (Used)

BMW M3

BMW M5

BMW M6

Caterham Seven

Chevrolet Corvette

Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Dodge Viper

Ferrari 360 Modena (Used)

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Jaguar XK/XKR

Lotus Elise

Lotus Exige

Maserati GranTurismo (Used)

Mercedes-Benz CL Class

Mercedes-Benz SL Class

Nissan GT-R

Porsche 911 Carrera

Porsche 911 Turbo (Used)

Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe (Replica)

Shelby Cobra 427 (Replica)

For the most part, all of these can be purchased with low miles for under $100,000.

I would also consider some of my favorite muscle cars and classics.

Are girls attracted to guys with sports cars?

My friend drives a 2004 Ford Mustang. Although it is 6 years old, he still attracts girls with his car. When this other kid at my school got a 2005 Ford Mustang, girls started dating him too. Im not going to lie, my friends are a little attractive (no homo) but I don't fall to far behind them. I drive a Kia Soul and do not attract any girls. Are girls attracted to guys with sports cars?

Most of the girls were interested in them when they got their Mustang's.

Answer
I would not say they are attracted to guys with sports cars, (word for word from my girlfriend of seven years) but girls like guys with "clean" cars. Most of the time when guys have a sports car reguardless of year make and modle, 99% of the time the car is real clean, (paint, interior, exter. ect) Now, you say you've got a Kia Soul, that's a new modle car, I'd gues 09, or so... You've got a 100,000 / 10 year warrenty. I'm in the automotive field, and my girlfriend owns a 06 kia spectra, and I can tell you first hand, you'll never have to put money into that car for parts that break on you. Because Kia's are very reliable cars. As though I'm a die hard Ford fan, those guys with those mustangs will be needing to replace part as part because lets face it, they will be riding the cars real hard. Think about it this way, they're on a date and than the car dies cause of how hard they drive them LOL would be funny, You on the other hand have a brand new car... and it's a Kia. I've never had to do anything to my girls car, and I promise you it'lll always remain like that. Keep the car, and wait until the right girl comes along. I met my girl in 7th grade... my first car was a 93 ford taurs, second car, 07 mustang, third 95 thunderbird, and now i'm in a 99 ranger... still with her.

im turning 19 in 3 1/2 weeks, ive had the same job at mcdonald's since i was 15 (believe it or not), dont criticize me, thats not what the question is about. anyways so ive been able to save up money, so im looking for a cool-looking sports car, with decent fuel economy (please be more lenient on the "decent" part), reasonably priced (maybe about $4500-$10000), and in general just very high-performance for its price

Answer
No one should criticize you, should be proud you're so hardworking.

Anyway for 10,000 no doubt a Honda Civic comes into mind. If you're looking for power, then stay away from that.

Mustang is a good deal, they're relatively affordable. You'll get a nice one for 10,000.

Acura RSX is also something to look at. Stock is okay, once you hook it up a little, it can hold it's own in terms of accel and hp. One of my personal favorites, you'll be able to get a 2006 model.

If you just want looks, mitsubishi eclipse. You can get a 2006 model, with maybe 50,000 miles. It'll last you and it's lightweight. Good accel, not a lot of HP but if you get the v4 it'll be good on gas.

Nissan 350z. This is if you're really looking for that power. Best you'd get is a 2003, 80,000 miles if you get manual. It's only a 2 seater and was made for sheer power.

I find the Audi TT to look like a female car. It's an audi so you'll be getting an older model. 2003 at most. But it's definitely very sporty.

Now if you're going ONLY for looks, get the mazda RX 8. It is a good car, the newer ones that is. Mazda is improving on their quality. The power is on the low side but it has all the looks you could want for a great price.

Also if you've heard of a brand called Scion, it was made by Toyota for college students. Who want something that looks nice and has great mpg. So check out the Scion TC. It has a lot of capabilities, very affordable as well.

Finally another good choice is a Hyundai Tiburon. You can get a 2007 model, with low miles for 10,000. It looks like a monster, with very nice accel and mpg. HP is a little low but thats okay.

Does a sport car have anything to do with sport?

heartlessv

When we were younger, we hear adults talk about sports cars. Old Camaros and Firebirds parked on the driveway chipping dried paint and spewing brown rust. Some were ragtop convertibles from the 1970's. Why is a sport car called a sport car when it has nothing to do with sports?

Answer
Back in the day, lots of privately owned Sports Cars were actively involved in racing. It was quite common for a racing enthusiast to buy a little MG or Triumph roadster straight off the dealer's car lot, race it on Sunday and drive it to work on Monday. Even the Trans-Am series back in the 1970's was based on modified production cars like Mustangs and Camaros that started life as factory-built street cars.

Now days with all the commercialization and advanced technology that goes into motorsports, that's no longer practical. The average NASCAR or Formula 1 racer is custom built from the ground up to do one thing, and you would never see one driving on the street.

I'm not sure we have gone in the right direction, but that seems to be where the money is these days... Oh well.

Whats a good cheap sports car?

Jon

Hello i need some help. This is my situation I'm 20 years old i live in Connecticut and I'm looking to purchase a car (used). I have about $2k cash to put down on it. I would say my limit for price would be about 6-8k due to financing fees taxes etc (credit score of 731). Now what I'm looking for is a pretty fast sports car to use as my DD.(I currently have a 89 mustang lx 5.0 which gets about 10 mpg city) Not very economical as a DD when gas is over $4 a gallon. Anyways back on topic, I found a 2002 wrx for 8k but got quoted for an insurance rate of 2k-3k. So this is out of the question! I make about 200 a week at the moment and pay $100 cell phone bill and $100 a month for rent. So my funds are limited for insurance + car payments. Basically i need to know a reliable cheap fast sports car i can get a good insurance rate on. But it also has to get good fuel economy! Sorry for the long rant and me being so picky but please help!
Forgot to add the oldest i will probably get is 2000.
Okay forgot to add another detail haha it should be front wheel drive. The reason why i am looking into getting a new car is my mustang is rear wheel and pushes about 350-400 (estimate never had it on a dyno) During the winter time the mustang goes NO WHERE. This past winter was hell with the stang. I figure a little front 4-6 cyl front wheel with anywhere between 250-300 (with less tq than the stang) would be better in the winter. Hope this makes sense haha.

Answer
with that kinda income I don't think a sports car, even a cheap one, is the wisest decision. You would have to sacrifice something like maybe going for an older sports car or not getting a sports car.

But to answer your question, mazda miata is pretty much the cheapest true sports car you could get. Its also pretty efficient.

Other cars that are close to sports cars, but not true sports cars would include toyota celica, honda civic coupe, chevy colbalt coupe, chevy cavalier coupe, mitsubishi eclipse, Honda prelude

I'm sure there r lots more.

If you want something fast, don't go for a miata, go for a front wheel drive sports car that someone already moded. This will be cheaper than getting a rwd car with the same power.

i need pictures that can be described by students for an oral exam

Answer
How old are the students? What kind of pictures -- is there a theme you are going for?

If the students are young, go for single facet pictures like BIRD, BEAR, DOG, etc...

If the students are in middle school, go for pictures that have multiple images in them. A farm that has buildings, animals, people doing chores, etc... Or a town square with a bank, court house, cars, people, etc. Or a stadium with a sports team, fans, blimp, giant screen, etc...

If the students are in high school, go for pictures that strike emotional cords. War scene, fire scene, emergency room, riot, ghetto scene, poverty, disease, etc...

What is the Best Super-car I can buy out of Law School?

Chas

I'm 21, and graduating from law school in three years. Around the time I graduate from school, I am looking into buying a high-end sports car. Right now, I own outright a 2006 Honda Accord V6 Coupe with 110k miles. While it may not be my favorite car, it has lasted me a good while (I've had it since I was 16). I wish I could stay satisfied with a car that is sure to last a whole lot longer, but I'm an absolute gear head and I'm thinking about buying myself a graduation present. However, while I'm fine buying a depreciating asset, I'd like to buy something that wont be confined to my garage, and live in Florida, so snow isn't a problem. So, I thought I'd ask you guys what your opinions are on the matter. I sort of know what cars I am looking at, but nothing is set in stone. I'm looking to buy used, and I would like the car to be able to be daily driven. So my top choices are (in no particular order):
-Nissan GT-R
-Porsche 911 GT3
-Aston Martin DB9 or V8 Vantage
-BMW M3
-Lamborghini Gallardo
-Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series

I am really liking the GT-R and the DB9. Hopefully in the next few years, I can get them for less than 60k. I have looked and the GT-R and DB9 can be found in the mid 60's, but my only concern is the maintenance cost on the Aston will be more than I want to spend. For the sake of value for money, I don't think the GT-R can be beat, its a super-car that competes with cars 4x its price. But at the same time the DB9 is just such a beautiful car. Those are my top two choices right now, and I have driven both the GT-R and DB9 and they are just two completley different cars. The exhaust note on the DB9 is just brutal, and the power from the V12 is astonishing. The GT-R is down on power and luxuriousness, but it just feels like the faster car (better pure driving experience). If you guys have any advice or suggestions on what I should do, it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Since your parents have so much money, or you won the lottery, how about you pay me to look full time to get you the best super-car for the money.

In what way are the M3 or CLK63 considered supercars? They're close, I would consider them a super-sports car, or just a sport/luxury car, but not a supercar.

I guess to answer your question, I can tell you're just pulling names out of a hat because the 911 GT3 is not a comfortable car for everyday use. The insurance on it is going to cost as much as the car payment. If you want a Porsche, get a Turbo S. It's going to be much faster on the street and much easier to live with.

Supercars you can live with on a daily basis and are relatively comfortable to drive and reliable (for the most part):
Gallardo
Audi R8
Nissan GTr
Porsche 911/Caymen
Jag XKRs
Used Ferrari 360's

Personally, I can't wait for the 2013 Viper

I'm surprised for "an absolute gearhead" you don't have a list of favorite cars you want to own instead of looking for attention on yahoo.

What to do in Puerto Rico?

Antonio

I want to travel to Puerto Rico and need some advice on where to stay, eat, things to do and see...let me know. Price ranges for a 5-day trip would be nice

Answer
Puerto Rico is extremely diverse. We have beaches, dry forests, rain forests, mountains and small islands. There is eco type tourism, luxury hotels and the in between local paradores, also vacation home rentals. So depending on what you love to do, what you want to do and what you can afford to do there are many different answers to your question.

If you love to shop, gamble, eat out and go out then San Juan is the obvious choice. You can stay in Condado, Old San Juan or Isla Verde. The hotels are pricey in these areas, but there are also vacation rentals for a lot less if a resort is out of your budget. While here you can visit many of the tourist attractions like Old San Juan, EL Yunque (rain forest), take day trips out to the Camuey Caverns and go south to Guavate where the famous Lechon (whole roasted pig) is made.

IF you are more into a small Intimate setting and are a lover of nature you can stay right in the rain forest, which is only a 30 min drive from San Juan. For this you do need a rental car. But I believe that anyone who wants to really see PR needs a car anyway. There are a few options for accommodations in the rain forest. http://villasevilla.net/ http://www.rainforestinn.com/ http://www.coquishideaway.com/

If you like a big beach resort with all the accommodations, including a water park and access to a ferry that takes you to a private beach for world class snorkeling then El Conquistador is your place to go. http://www.elconresort.com/

Surfing and diving your thing, then out west is where you should be in Rincon. Stay at the Rincon Beach resort http://www.rinconbeach.com/ http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/dive-desecheo-island/

Things to do in PR
Old San Juan historical sites
Bacardi rum factory tour
El Yunque Rain Forest
Camuey Caverns
Caja de Muerto
Gilligan's Island
Hiking in Toro Negrro
Cueva Ventana in Utuado
Dos Bocas, lunch on the lake
Vieques Bio Bay
BEACHES!!

Here is a great site to find ideas about day trips in Puerto Rico. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/

Does anyone have any information about Costa Rica or Panama or suggest another retirement location?

krute

If anyone can offer any information on Costa Rica, Panama, or another retirement destination (outside the U.S) it would be greatly appreciated. We would be interested in the following:
1) the cost of a modest place to live
2) Relative closeness to conveniences such as groceries, hospitals, banks, etc.
3) climate
4) proximity to the beach
5) overall cost of living
6) Approximate population of americans in that area
Any information given would be deeply appreciated. Thankyou!

Answer
The cost of modest housing in the city of Panama is affordable (less than $500/month mostly) with luxury stuff busting the seams at much higher prices (over $1000-2000). The beaches are similar. You can live in the interior or the highlands (David for example) for quite a bit less than the city. Boquete is getting more expensive all the time but is still a great deal for retirees (the prices, location and amenities).

Most of the conveniences are in Panama City, there are some in the David area, but more basic. Keep in mind, If you like to have options for shopping and food, Panama City is about it. It's about 7 hours from David by car.

Most everything is close to the beach... most options for living are Panama City & David area which are within an hour or less to some beaches or several retirement destinations at the beach. Coronado is recommended and is on 1.5 hours from Panama City. You get the basics plus some nice local amenities and great beaches with an easy drive to the City when you want it.

Overall cost of living is generally fractional if you live by basic means, but if you require the same luxuries you have lived by in North America, then you would find that housing prices vary from really cheap to unreasonable, good healthcare is much less, domestic help is extremely cheap (full-time live-in maid cost $160/month!) and domestically produced food and goods are much less. With the exception of clothes which are really cheap, imported items are generally similar in price.

There are no official numbers but it is estimated about 25-30,000 North Americans live in the area of David/Boquete (Chiriqui Highlands region). This area has a year-round "Spring-Like" climate that retirees really enjoy there. If you want the beach life Coronado is recommended. If you like city action and lots of options, stay with Panama City. Bocas del Toro is also very exciting but is too rustic for most retirees (not much for services or amenities available)

Conclusively Panama offers the world's best retirement program in a country which is very affordable. You will find cheaper (sure, perhaps the Phillipines) but not with better amenities and a more safe and stable environment in which to live. You also get to live tax-free, get huge discounts on most of the things you buy and do and this visa is easy to obtain. You even get bring your vehicle and household items here DUTY FREE. It's a great deal.

Conclusively, Panama has a beautiful City with amazing skyline and gorgeous towns in the beaches and mountains. Take a trip to San Jose and compare it. It is much cheaper and much closer to beaches everywhere here in Panama.

If you want more answers I'll gladly assist. You can e-mail me at livingwellinsd@yahoo.com
