Why they say Nissan Skyline are the best?

paulo

Just wondering whats so special about this car? They will be available here in the U.S. soon for roughly $70,000. Thas $20K more than a 5 series BMW or M class benz? wtf?

I know its not allowed here in the Us bcoz of some safety issues, emissions etc. But all it does basically is to Drift race.... right?

Answer
Believe it or not, the Skyline has been around overseas since the late 50's & was under the Prince Skyline name. The Skyline R32 GTR (which is the model I still prefer & wish I could own someday), which was an 8th generation of the make, is known by enthusiasts & tuners alike as "Godzilla" because it pretty much blew everyone away as far as both in competition & street due to its raw power, handling, etc etc...
Next came the R33, & then the R34: which has been unfortunately glamourized by both Hollywood & video games alike....(F&F films, Gran Turismo, etc etc)
The new Skyline (R35) though nice, in my opinion, has some huge shoes to fill due to the immense capabilities of the R34 that preceeded it...time will only tell...also I belive it will be "marketed" under the Infinity badge since the Nissan badge already has the 350Z....
Skylines ARE LEGAL to own & use here in the U.S. If you are interested, I've spoken to a great guy in Florida named Jay who has his own business: www.Skylineking.com (shameless plug there..lol) that imports them (he has 2 R34s registered AND insured for the U.S.) However, there are a lot of "hassles" (money-wise as well as red tape) involved in registration for the cars.
Finally (gasp), Skylines are not just for drifting....also, M series BMWs, AMG MBs, exotics like Ferraris, Lambos, Veyrons. etc...can be in the "crosshairs of any fine tuned R34 owner...." (see recent issue of Sport Compact Car)

What car should i get to drift and how do i drift?

JJ

Answer
Unless you have tons of money, the best 1st car to learn how to drift in would be any POS rear-wheel-drive car that has a reasonable amount of power for as cheap as possible. Chances are you're going to wreck this 1st car (probably more than once) learning the basics of drifting.

Once you've got a handle on the basics, like turbocharged83 mentioned a Nissan 240SX is a good car to use if you're serious about getting into the sport. People have used 240's for years in drifting so you'll have no trouble finding parts and vast amounts of information to set up the car properly for drifting.

EDIT - as far as HOW do you drift, you induce power oversteer (spin the rear wheels) and "steer" the car by sliding the rear end under power while steering the car to keep the back end from overtaking the front end in controlled slides. Youtube has tons of videos of people drifting if you need to see it done instead of reading about it.

What (Tamiya-1/24 scale-Sports Car) model should I start out with?

Andrew

So, I want to get into model building. I'm interested in putting together those 1/24 scale model (Sports cars) by Tamiya.

Question: What model from that line of product should I start out with as a beginner? Just something simple to start out with. I'd prefer Japanese sports cars if possible, but any will do.

Another question: What else should I, a beginner, have before attempting to do model building? Aside from: Side cutters, A modelling knife, Tamiya cement, Spray paint, Tamiya brush paint, Tweezers, Gloves, and a gallon of patience?

Answer
Pick whatever strikes your fancy:

I think you've got your supply list pretty well figured out. Just make sure you've got a nicely lit and well ventilated area to work in.

Is it wrong to buy your daughter bigger breasts as a graduation gift?

MrJohnson

Upper-class parents in the Dallas-Ft.Worth customarily treat
daughters graduating high school to breast implants(unless
they are large, where reduction would come into play. The boys
get hot sports cars, and the girls get breasts. The parents presume that the girls, with the larger breasts, will be more popular
college prospects, get more dates, and feel better about themselves in general.
My question is, do you find this repulsive? Is this just on the same level as the obligatory graduation nose-job common years ago
on the east coast(reduction, of course), or is it on a different level
altogether? Are large breasts really going to improve things?
Or are you creating a situation where these young ladies will
become obsessive about their body image in later life, running
out to the botox center when the first little wrinkle around the eys shows up? Is there anything normal about altering a minors
appearance like this? Are we not obsessed with body image as it is?

Answer
I am a 24 year old female. If my parents offered me to get bigger breasts as a graduation present, I would be disgusted. Of course they are going to be more popular in college. They are more likely to lay down with a guy. That's why they are popular. They wont be known for being smart or athletic, they will be known for their breast size.

If the boys are getting sports cars....get the girl one of her choice! If you get your own daughter breast implants you might as well get her a van with no back seats. Just a mattress and a disco ball. More than likely she will end up there.

I don't know if you have looked at any of the studies done lately but it is not healthy for a young teenage girl to get implants. Nor is it healthy for anyone to get them. You wouldn't pay for your sons breast enhancement would you?? Then don't do it for your daughter. Save your daughter the embarrassment, and teach her self esteem instead.

How I can Buy a Luxury Car in Usa and export it to asia?

Shun

Im Trying to Buy Some Luxury Cars in USA and shipped to Asia, any clue?

Answer
Whenever cars are taken to a new country, the problem is not getting them out of the country of origin, but getting them into the destination country. Check with your port of entry officials to see if they have special requirements or taxes. Tell them your plans and ask their advice.

Is it legal to act as a straw vehicle buyer for export purpose?

kilotao

There are straw buyers buying luxury cars from dealers, and then the export company will get the car and export it. Many dealers have a rule to against export. So, basically, is it illegal to act as such straw buyer? No car loan is involved.

Answer
Since that ation of exporting is not illegal, buying a car that way would not be illegal.

I want an american car.. preferably GM. What are good sports cars other the the Camaro? Im not looking to buy a brand new one. Ford or any other american car business works too though.

Answer
are your parents rich? if so, then a sports car would be fine. and just fyi, don't buy GM, they're prolly the worse car makers in the world. if you buy anything with a GM motor in it, it WILL break after 4 months. I have tested this, and it is confirmed.

If you want to not look like a spoiled brat, get an older muscle/sporty car. Like a 1994 camaro, or a 1990 firebird. heck, even a 1976 corvette would do you well. you most likely won't find one of these running, so put a v8 big block in and listen to it purr. If you do end up with one of these, make sure you bring it to races and car shows, or it'll be a waste.

If you want to look like a spoiled brat, get any year 2000+ car you see and like the look of. Don't even ask what motor and parts are in it, since you're not paying for it, why would you care. My personally recomendations for the spoiled brat car is 2010 integra, 2009 ferrario, lambourginis, etc.

good luck

what are some pros and cons for owning a sports car and or a truck?

natedog

By sports car I mean a challenger srt8 and a truck an F250. I love to hunt and fish. I like living out in the country back in the woods. I enjoy looking at big trucks and watching them do a pull competition to see who can pull the most weight i also like mud riding and off road trail riding. I enjoy looking at sports cars and tuning them up to make them faster and listening to the roaring of the engines. Which would suit me better and what are some pros and cons?

Answer
I had a Nissan 350Z and a Ford F250 4x4 at the same time. Z car was fun to drive, fast, fuel efficient but noisy on the highway. No good for back roads, pot holes, mudding, or hunting. Ground clearance was zero. F250 is diesel, not fuel efficient, will go about anywhere you want. Quieter on the highway than the Z car but not as much fun to drive. I sold the Z car and bought a Jaguar XJR. Now that's a sports car, quiet, fuel efficient, will outrun the Z car hands down (supercharged v8) , and oh so comfortable to drive. Mine is a 2005. List price was $82 k but i bought it for less than you will spend on the challenger new by a long shot. No comparison in quality of car and with a Jag, you will be one of a few instead of one of many. As far as a truck, I would consider the new Ford F series CNG/LNG coming out soon. You can fuel it (natural gas) for about half the price of diesel or gasoline. It will burn n gas or gasoline. Just remember, a sports car will take you someplaces but a truck will take you just about anywhere you want to go. If you can't have both like me, go for the truck!

Would it be enough to build up infrastructure ? I.e. electricity, wells etc.

Answer
LOL who said palestinian citizens get any?
When i went to Ramallah, all of the citizens were like no we don't get any supply i was like HUH???!!

If u have seen on TV, u will be freaked out!!
Arab women from United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan etc... has Donated LOOOTS many of their Gold and Jewelery. its like Tons of Gold where shipped to Palestine and not all that.

The Saudi King has donated around 100,000,000$ for re-building Gaza, and lots of donation from Iran and other muslim nations like Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia etc...

If palestinians really receive those donations from all over the world, then u will see them living in Luxury villas and Driving their Porsche & Lamborghini's!!

But sadly they get nothing, 50% goes to the corrupted palestinian Authorities (Mahmoud Abbas takes them all, he spend them on Luxury shoes and cars...not fogetting his vications in Europe!! this hypocrite is stealing poor people's donations) and 49% goes to the "Charity Agencies" the rest 1% goes to Palestinian refugees so normal palestinian citizens get 0%!!!!!

do you recommend Doha Qatar to live?? please which pros do i have there?

Lucia

well I got a proposal to get a job there, to work in a luxury hotel
however i dont know how good is to move there; i dont like so much to live around arabic guys haha

but for work money well sounds good; but i would like to know, how is life there
do you recommend to live there? which are the pros and contras do you see to live there

i dont know if i should take the option

thanks

Answer
I have lived here for several years and it is a very easy place to live. Economy is good, weather is generally lovely (assuming you like it sunny and warm). Summer sucks but you learn to deal with it. Price of living is expensive - make sure your housing is included as part of any contract (seriously -- it's more pricey here than NYC and Tokyo). As long as you're comfortable with terms of your contract, go for it.
Traffic here sucks. More road accidents and deaths here per capita than almost anywhere else in the world. Really. You need to be an assertive/aggressive driver here if you expect to survive and not wither away like some frail flower.
Qatar still issues visas under sponsorship. Basically this means that whoever you work for has control over you. So to leave the country -- a weekend trip someplace -- requires you to get your employer's permission and signature on a paper at least 24 hours in advance of your trip. Kind of a drag, but if you work for a western employer it's usually only a minor annoyance. But it gets frustrating that you need their permission for so much here -- to get a liquor license, to hire a housemaid, buy a car, etc.
Qatar is nice, centrally located -- a great place to travel to other places from (Europe, Asia, and Africa are all about a 5 hour flight away). If you're a guy, it can be rather hard to find single women to meet. Loads of Asian ladies looking for sugar daddies...but otherwise, there's about 1 single woman for every 10 single men here. Not great odds if you're a guy...
There is a website called QatarLiving -- loads of info on life here, you can post questions, read what other people say...

Good luck with your decision!

Can you make a good living and support a family being a licensed practical nurse?

luxury cars under 40k on Car of the Year: Family Car
luxury cars under 40k image
Q. Before i get into the description I do not want anyone saying go for an RN instead. Yes they make quite a bit more money than lpn's do but i don't think i want all the legal responsibilities that the registered nurse has plus lpn school is shorter and i would be making money sooner. My main question could I support myself, my spouse, 2-3 kids a 3 floor house, with basement or game room, living room, and upstairs with 2 bedrooms, Pay for the mortgage, Supply food for the family, own a car,pay for the gas, send kids to school, pay for bills and taxes and all of that. I know LPN's can make a decent salary. Can they make up to 60 grand a year. Can i make this good of a living as and LPN and lets say I would be working in a nursing home and I live in the united states is Pennsylvania.
A nice home is fine. I do not need some mansion or anything just a nice looking home same with a car i do not need a jaguar or anything like that. I looked on the computer and it says you can make a good living off of it.

Answer
Only you can define "good living".

Let's pretend you make the $40k median.

That's a house bought at $150k, with excellent credit and 20% down.

That's a car payment of under $300.

And we haven't even gotten to savings, vacations, student loans, emergency funds, health insurance. . .

While this is considered lower middle or middle class, it doesn't get you far. As a young single person, I could probably stretch this well, but a 3 story house with a game room and 3 kids and a spouse? You'd be living paycheck to paycheck without many luxuries.

As far as liability, you are a licensed care giver. Screw up, and you are just as at risk for a lawsuit and losing your license as any other licensed health care professional.

What is the best rated luxury car under $40k?

bmw 3 series. voted car of the year

Hi

GTA 4

In which city and what part of that city is the best place to look for a Old Beater, you know, a rusted out peace of $hit that back firers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqa2DdAVZiM&feature=PlayList&p=69C059E7608ACC82&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4

In my mind this is the best kind of car in the game, it so entertaining to drive.

Fast sports cars are all the same and the "so called one of best cars in the game" the one with lambo doors handles like $hit

Thank you

Answer
I don't know of any "sure" location to find them, but the old beaters like the one in the video or other similar ones, tend to be found in the crappier parts of town, for example in the Broker area where Jacob lives, or in the industrial parts of Alderney.

can any of u give me the location of an infernus in gta 4?

Answer
There's a brown infernus near the Champs de leize type structure in Dukes. (aka the big circle arch thing in the first area). It is right around that and on the side the hospital is on.

What Luxury car manufacturer is the cheapest to maintain?

luxury cars highest mpg image

Gavin G

I'm currently looking to buy a used Luxury car with a budget of $15,000. I'm leaning towards a 5/7 series bmw.. But I've also been looking at brands like Mercedes, Porsche, & Audi.
So i was wondering what would be the cheapest to own (Maintenance, Insurance, MPG, etc) & what do you guys think about a 2004 Porshe Cayenne for 10,000 (150,000 miles)

Answer
i think for the states the cost of ownership/maintenance from cheapest to most expensive goes

acura
lincoln
infinity
cadillac
lexus
audi
bmw
mercedes
porsche

personally, i think the cayenne is both a very bad car and an amazing car.
it has such a terrible devaluation that it makes it super easy for people with low money to own a cool car. unfortunately, it has high maintenance costs which if you are not prepared for, can be a nightmare.
if you can afford high maintenance costs, the cayenne is a super cool car because it offers such a great amount of luxury utility and speed that it is hard to match with other used cars. if you however are looking at a $15,000 car because its what you can afford, the cayenne and all other luxury cars are a terrible idea.

How do I know if a cold air intake would benefit my car's performance?

BK C

I drive an Acura CL Type S, and I was told to get a cold air intake to increase horsepower. I was also told it would help by giving me a little bit better gas mileage. I've heard it helps with horsepower, but does it help with gas mileage as well? Also, since my car is basically a half-sports, half-luxury car anyways, would I really notice that much of an improvement at all? My knowledge of automobiles is very limited, so I just learn as I go :)

Answer
The best mod for a N/a car is an intake, most cars see a decent hp jump when buying one of the higher price intakes such as Injen, Aem and etc. You will see better mpg on the highway, you do know that with more power you will be tempted to step on it a little more in the beginning so you might see a little lower since you will enjoy the sound the intake makes when you step on it. The best thing to improve mpg is free up the movement of air into and out of your car.

Buying a Scion FRS as a young first sports car buyer?

CorpyChase

Yes, I am planning to buy a Scion FR-S in the future. I've only been driving for more than a year and I'm paying my dad about $200 a month for adding my name on his car (Acura CL Type-S 2001). I'm enlisted in the Air Force for a 6yr contact, and assuming that I'll be in on E3 ($1746mo), I can save up for a brand new Scion FR-S but my concern is that I'm going to be paying more for my insurance, or will it go down by time? I don't think I'll be driving much while in active duty but I want to know the circumstances of being a young first time sports car buyer?

Answer
Insurance will go down in time, but only by $1-2/per month. When you reach 25 years of age, insurance will decrease much more.

Since you won't be driving much, don't waste your money. Wait until you are finished with the 6 year contract.

Thinking about getting one of the three above mentioned SUV's used, price range anywhere between $4K to 9K,from like 1999 to 2006 and hopefully under 80K in milage, but which one's better overall and from what years' model should I stay away from?

Answer
Based on a 10-year reliability history, the only two models that have a perfect +1.00 Composite Reliability Value on a scale of -1.00 to +1.00 are:

The Toyota 4Runner midsize sport-utility vehicle
The 4-cylinder Toyota RAV4 small sport-utility vehicle.

Nissan Pathfinders and Nissan Xterras are on neither AutoOnInfo.net's Best of 2009 nor its Worst of 2009.

What kind of car should I buy under $3500?

coolrobot

This will be my first car. I need something that can get me to school everyday. What should I be looking for in terms of brand, make, year, and mileage? Also, where should I look to find used cars for sale?

Answer
Lot of variables you stated there, so I'll just give you a list of cars to look up on your local Craigslist (Or eBay if your into that...) for a few different Categories of Autos.

SUV: 1994-2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L V6 - Legendary reliability, Engines go 250,000+ without needing much more than regular oil changes, etc. So unless its got like 300k on it, you'll be good. Average Gas Mileage for an SUV. Cheap as all hell to fix if anything happens to it, and parts are easy to come by. Huge aftermarket support too. Plus, standard driver air bags and optional (HA!) 4WD make it nice and safe.

Sedan: 1996-2003 Honda Civic/Accord. - There's a reason that Japanese car makers got the reputation of being cheap and reliable. And those reasons are right here. Good gas milage and a good driving feel make these some of the most reasonable used cars you could buy right now. Only thing about these is you REALLY wanna keep away from buying one where it looks like a 4th grader got a hand of it and strapped as many modifications as they could to it. The guys that own these tend to really beat the crap out of them and making ruining valves a national past-time. Parts are cheap too.

Coupe: 2003-2005 Chevrolet Cavalier - Overlooked by many simply because of the Cavalier tag which was ruined in the late 80's, early 90's. For 2003, the ecotec 2.2L engine was introduced which made more power AND better mileage than its predecessor. These engines are very reliable, as they're so simple that not much can go wrong. Plus if something does happen these engines are a dime a dozen. Or at least 300 for a used one with sub 80k due to GM's platform sharing across multiple brands.

Sports: 1994-2003 Ford Mustang V6 - I hate this one as I'm a Camaro guy, but its true. These cars are becoming more and more available and I say take the opportunity while you can. The 1999+ mustangs look incredibly good in my opinion, as well as being more refined to drive (Traction Control). Reliability is iffy on this one though because like the Honda's because people that own them tend to beat them. The V6 is your way to go because of that and gas mileage. Plus even the smaller engine can still pull quite a bit.

That's just my thinking of what a good, reliable, safe, and fun first car would be. Like I said, check the craigslist around you, and ALWAYS go and see the car before you make an offer. Try taking someone with you that knows cars too (a parent, friend, etc.) so they can help you make your decision. Have fun!

A mustang is a great car for the money, new or used. Performance parts are cheap and there are many modifications possible. For short track events, Miata's do very well. They can out corner and out brake almost any car. Beck builds a Porsche kit car that is also light and extremely good on the track. For a daily driver, I would go with a Mustang. Have fun in the New Year!

What are other sports cars/coupes that are along the lines of a mustang?

i messed u

Maybe i can clarify better here: I would like something that looks very nice (I love the way coupes look and most sports cars are coupes so..). I love the way the 99-04 mustangs look so right now thats my leader. Alot of my friends have camaros which are cheap but i personally don't like them. But i want to know what some other options are.

Answer
if you have money, want speed, and dont care for looks, go for a honda. if you're for looks then go for a 3.8 mustang from 99-04. then mod it. itll be lighter than the 4.6's and can move pretty well. if you want the v8, itll be heavier, but it WILL move a lot more with mods, but gas will kill your wallet. the 3.8 camaro is okay, just about the same as the 3.8 mustang. the 8 cylinders, I don't follow as well, I'm a 6 cylinder man. good luck!

Looking for a mid-level travel trailer?

one slide out, about thirty feet long

Answer
You are approaching this decision wrong.

You should be looking first at what you are going to use for a tow vehicle. Find out how much weight it is able to pull without exceeding its Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR, usually found on driver door). Note that weight ratings are different if you are using an in-bed hitch like a fifth wheel / goose neck or bumper ball or weight distribution/equalizing system. The latter will likely be required if your vehicle is front wheel drive. Then take a look at how many people can sit in the tow vehicle with seat belts, as you will probably want that same number sleeping in the trailer. Of course, if you have a car, you can't pull a fifth wheel very easily (though it can be done with special setups) as you can with a pickup. While you are thinking about weight, also think about power of your vehicle and places that you would want to go. A small SUV can pull a trailer just fine on flat to gentle hills, but will labor badly in mountains going up and get pushed coming back down.

Once you identify how much weight you have to work with, visit a *large* dealer of trailers, especially used. Why consider used? Because you are likely to find a greater assortment of various styles and floor plans that are based on building methods that are luxury, lightweight, ultra light, popup (yes, there are very long popups - see HiLo trailers), traditional and so forth. Be straight up front with the salesman with the information you know. Under NO circumstances should you let the salesman pressure you into a purchase that exceeds, or nearly exceeds, your weight limits. I say nearly because if your limit is 5000 pounds, and you buy a coach that weighs 4700 pounds empty, what are you going to do with the clothing / food / waste / toys / whatever that you want to bring along? Yep, now you may be overweight and in a dangerous situation.

Once you identify the class of trailer (lightweight, ultralight, fifth wheel, travel trailer, popup, etc) then you can start looking at floor plans and sleeping arrangements. Make sure that little ones will have plenty of space to play indoors when it starts raining torrential downpours. Again, keep in mind the places that you like to go (lot of parks have length and height limits) and how long you want to stay out (boon docking - meaning no connections - mandates you carry everything self contained) and that your trailer can accommodate.

I am not specifying any particular brand over another since the industry seems to be out of control. New units seem to be plagued with quality control issues across the board but have warranties, but used units can have terrific deals even if manufacturers are out of business. If you are new to the lifestyle, then please consider a used model first. Consider it a trainer model as you learn to tow / maneuver / use the unit. Mistakes are going to be made, better to be done with on a cheaper unit vs a new one with a large lien attached...

If you are indeed new, also consider renting a trailer for a weekend (keep weight in mind) and see what you liked / didn't like about the experience, what could have been different, etc. Then talk to the salesman, and let them know. They work commission (usually), and if they know you wont buy unless you are happy, they wont waste yours (or theirs) time.

You mentioned a single slide out. For a mid-level trailer, this is likely going to be at least third as long as the trailer. Its also a big potential of water leaks. ALL SLIDEOUTS LEAK! The trick is to redirect the water back outside and not pooling inside. Pay attention to condition of seals, inside and outside, and ANY discoloration around the slide. Failures with refrigerators in slides are common, as are stoves and sinks due to hoses for supply (Water, LP) and drains.

Buy something that you can work on or learn how to. That is the biggest expense of owning a trailer / coach: paying somebody else to repair and maintain. Of course, if it is a warranty issue, then it needs to go to a dealer.

Look beyond the surface (shiny wheels, fancy radio, big tv) as those tend to be visual distractions to keep you from seeing the small stuff that should be noticed. Especially on used.

Don't buy first one, take at least a few days and mull it over. Unless its an absolute perfect match, wait to buy. If it sells, so be it. There are literally thousands of others available.

Need opinions on Rav4 vs Honda CRV vs VW Rabbit -?

K.B.

I'm shopping for a NEW vehicle - I want to stay close to $22k (originally wanted under $18k) - I've thought about the Rabbit as used Jetta wagons I've test driven feel very sporty yet well built, tight.

I test drove a Rav4 today and it feels pretty good too. I also like the Matrix as it's more car-like than the CRV or Rav4. But I'd have to somehow special order side curtain airbags on the Matrix.

I looked at the CRV but it's a bit more pricey. I have and am keeping a '95 Civic that we like as a 3rd car. But it's low on features and needs some work.

With some of these the features I would like, it puts the vehicle up into the higher price range, but I don't want the leather interior that some of those have. I have plenty of time to wait for the dealer to find me the exact vehicle I want.

I haven't seen many Rabbits out there, and have heard that some VW models are a bit expensive to maintain.

My husband has a Prius - we love that car & service we get at the dealer.
Thanks folks, but I've owned several American cars and have had better luck with my Honda and previous Japanese cars. My Dodge Colt (Japanese imported by Dodge), and my Honda, both lasted well over 100,000 miles and my Chevy & Ford, and my Mom's Buick did not or will not likely last that long.

So, I am looking for input on the Toyota Rav4, the Honda CRV or the VW Rabbit. Thanks anyway.

Overall, Honda and toyota are neck in neck when it comes to reliability. however, I think honda may have pulled ahead this year due to the rush by toyota to bring the yaris here (largest recall in company history)
I personally dont like the looks of either, im more of a sports car guy, but the quality is great with either.
Toyota took over gm as the largest automaker in the world this last quarter, so maybe you should hit the honda up so toyota doesnt get bigger.

In 1986, the Yugo was the lowest priced car in the US at under $4000. What is the lowest priced new car that can be found on a car lot today? Zero options, stripped down etc...?
This isn't something I'm going to buy...I was just curious if anybody knew...

Answer
From Business Week:

The Race To Build Really Cheap Cars

The newest thing on four wheels is sturdy, inexpensive, and probably not made in the U.S.

How cheap is cheap? Renault-Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn is betting that for autos, the magic number is under $3,000. At a plant-opening ceremony in India Apr. 4, he was already talking up the industry's next challenge: a future model that would sport a sticker price as low as $2,500âabout 40% less than the least expensive subcompact currently on the market. Renault-Nissan is the first global automaker to take up the gauntlet thrown down in 2003 by India's Tata Motors, which plans to launch a $2,500 car next year. Both are leading a race to the bottom that could affect the business every bit as much as Henry Ford's Model T did a century ago.

After years of making their mass-market cars more expensive, the world's automakers have abruptly shifted into reverse. With stagnant growth in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, they are now eyeing emerging markets for new opportunities. That means redesigning the car for buyers who might otherwise be able to afford only a motorcycle. And outdated, stripped-down models won't do. Demand is surging for basic cars that combine modern comfort with safety at a fraction of today's cost. The rush to build a modern, no-frills car could do for autos what airlines like Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV ) and JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU ) have done for travel, and H&M and Zara have done for fashion. Low-cost cars are "the single most important trend in the automotive industry today," says Vikas Tibrewala, the Paris-based executive director of the Monitor Group consultancy.

Whatever the lowest sticker price turns out to be, the discounting trend will hit cars across the board, from minis to SUVs. Renault already has a runaway hit with its bare-bones Logan sedan. The automaker began offering the roomy Logan in Europe for just $7,200 in 2004âsome 40% less than rival sedansâand has since sold 450,000 of the cars in 51 countries. Workers at its sprawling Dacia plant near the Romanian city of Pitesti and a newer plant in Russia toil in round-the-clock shifts but still can't meet demand. "With the Logan we have the product and we have the lead," says Ghosn.

A $3,000 car for Asian markets, built in low-cost India with a local partner, is the next logical step. "The main weakness of today's global automakers is that they are incapable of delivering a car that fulfills basic needs at a very low price," says Ghosn. "The people who have these skills are in India and China."

CUTTING COSTS TO THE BONE
That realization is now dawning on the industry's giants. When Tata made its vow to build a $2,500 car, many Western auto executives ridiculed the project, dubbing it a four-wheel bicycle. They aren't laughing anymore. Tata's model is a real car with four doors, a 33-horsepower engine, and a top speed of around 80 mph. The automaker claims it will even pass a crash test. And while the car probably won't win any beauty contests, it's no ugly duckling either, according to the handful of industry insiders who have been given a glimpse. The rest is top secret, but Tata engineers are already testing a prototype as the clock ticks toward a late 2008 launch. The key is India's low-cost engineers and their prodigious ability to trim needless spending to the bone, a skill developed by years of selling to the bottom of the pyramid. "You have to cut costs on everythingâseats, materials, componentsâthe whole package," says Tata Group Chairman Ratan N. Tata.

There's no lack of potential customers: Hundreds of millions of Chinese, Indians, Brazilians, Russians, and others will likely join the middle class in the coming decade, and cars are sure to be at the top of their shopping lists. As a result, the global car market is polarizing: The luxury segment continues to grow, cheap cars boom, and everything else gets squeezed. By 2012, the market for vehicles priced under $10,000 is likely to reach 18 million cars, or a fifth of world auto sales, according to Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. That's up from 12 million today.

So far this year, every major carmaker has announced its own 21st century Model T project. Toyota (TM ), Volkswagen (VLKAY ), Fiat (FIA ), and Peugeot have all vowed to build cut-rate Logan-killers. General Motors Corp. (GM ) intends to use its Korean subsidiary, GM Daewoo, to design a model that will sell for about $7,000. Chrysler (DCX ) is developing low-cost cars with Chinese manufacturer Chery. Korea's Hyundai Motor Co. is making India its global hub for small-car production and expects to double its output to 600,000 cars annually by yearend, many of them destined for Europe. "Automakers will have to live with a trend of lower-cost vehicles. It is difficult but that's where the demand is," says David Nicholas (Nick) Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific. The average retail price for many compacts will probably sink to $9,000, while minis will go for around $7,000, Reilly predicts. That's about 15% below current model prices.

Car manufacturers, of course, have always sought to cut costs and pack more value into each new-model generation to stay competitive. But now, emerging markets like India offer cheap engineering, inexpensive parts-sourcing, and low-cost manufacturing. For its new car, for example, Tata should be able to slash the cost of the engine to about $700, or 50% lower than a Western-developed equivalent, says one consultant close to the company. Combine Indian brainpower with Western innovation in design, materials, and processes, and the potential exists for a quantum leap in cost-reduction without major sacrifices in quality. Tata and Renault's Indian partner Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. are already doing engineering work for global automakers at cut-rate prices. Tata, for example, is working on a coupe for a major Western customer.

LESSONS FOR BIG CARS
Another new factor in the low-cost car segment is the possibility of huge volumes that can drive profits. Ultra-cheap cars historically have not sold in large numbers. In 2005, low-cost cars represented less than 1% of new-vehicle sales in the U.S., according to Roland Berger. By contrast, emerging markets, which held little appeal for the major car brands even 10 years ago, now offer a volume bonanza that can make even cheap cars profit spinners. In India alone, some 1.6 million motorcycle and scooter riders are likely to buy a car over the next five years, the Berger study estimates. India's auto market is set to double to 3.3 million cars by 2014, while China's will grow 140% over the same period, to 16.5 million cars, according to J.D. Power (MHP ) Automotive Forecasting. That kind of demand makes dirt-cheap cars viable. "The real trick and idea behind the low-cost segment is to increase volume as much as possible to bring costs down," says Alfredo Altavilla, CEO for Fiat Powertrain Technologies. (Fiat signed a technical partnership with Tata Motors in February.)

What automakers learn from experimenting with discount cars may well shape how more expensive models are made. To make a success of the Logan, Renault manufactured in low-cost Romania. It developed a design that reduced the total number of parts and made assembly a cinch. It stripped out sophisticated electronics, dispensed with high-tech curved windshields, and even saved $3 per vehicle by using identical rear-view mirrors on each side. The biggest breakthrough: Renault was able to eliminate expensive prototypes and the pricey tooling involved in building them. As a result, it could move directly from digital mockup to production, an innovation that saved the French car company $40 million. Now Renault has figured out how to eliminate physical prototypes for all of its models.

Toyota is working on a bottom-of-the-line car with an expected sticker price of under $7,000 that could hit emerging markets such as India and Brazil by 2009. Toyota's management is banking on breakthroughs in new materials, manufacturing, and low-cost factories. If the Japanese company's engineers do their job, the cost-saving strategies will be deployed in everything from Corollas to Lexus SUVs. "When I asked for the low-cost development project two years ago, I wanted to see technology that would be applied to other vehicles as well," says Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe. A prototype is expected this spring. A successful Toyota venture in this segment could "scramble all the eggs in emerging markets," says Fiat's Altavilla.

WHAT'S AT STAKE
To automakers' astonishment, cheap cars are also proving to be just as popular in established markets as they are in the developing world. Renault originally expected to sell the Logan only in Eastern Europe and other emerging markets. But in 2005, the automaker started offering it across Western Europe. Buyers have flooded showrooms to get behind the wheel of the no-frills model. Yesterday's cheap cars (remember the laughably bad Yugo?) failed to take off in the West because of poor quality. The new generation of cheap cars will be sturdy and reliable and will appeal to Western consumers who want to spend money on things other than transport. "It's all about price for performance," says Frankfurt music teacher Elmar Kolle, who in November replaced his Ford (F ) Mondeo with a marine-blue Logan sedan. "I'd have to pay 5,000 euros [$6,500] more for a comparable car" from another manufacturer.

The shift to cut-rate wheels is jarring for an industry that has fixated for at least a decade on premium cars and their fat margins. BMW earns an estimated $3,300 per car on average, vs. Logan's $400 per car, according to Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, director of the German Center for Automotive Research. And when you get down to a sub-$3,000 sticker price, some experts say it'll be tough to cover the cost of the parts involved. "Any way you look at it, it will be difficult to be profitable," says David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.

So why bother? Western automakers who don't join the fray risk being shut out of the growth in emerging markets. Even worse, they could give ambitious challengers a dangerous foothold in the Westânot unlike the one they gave the Japanese by ignoring their low-cost, fuel-efficient models in the 1970s. China's Geely makes a model for $3,900 and it's aiming to export a car to the U.S. by 2010. Suzuki Motor Corp. (SZKMF ), which sells cars starting at $4,400 in India, will launch a new compact in 2008 and export it to Europe. Tata's $8,500 Indica compact sedan already sells in southern and eastern Europe. "The Chinese and Indians are coming," says Patrick Pelata, chief of strategy and product planning at Renault. "If we don't do our job, we will give them a huge slice of market share. We have to keep moving."

The majority of low-cost cars will range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on size and features. Analysts say adding equipment required for safety and emissions control in Western markets would automatically bring the price of a cheap Chinese or Indian car up to $6,000 to $7,000. Many cars in India, for example, are sold without airbags or antilock brakes, standard features in the West. "There is a huge cost element to safety," says Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India, noting that crash-test facilities alone are a gigantic investment.

Still, India remains the chief test bed and battleground for really cheap cars. Hyundai uses its plant outside Chennai as a global hub for its small-car production. By tapping local suppliers and manufacturing, the Korean upstart is able to offer a popular entry-level subcompact, the Santro, at a starting price of $6,300 in India, while still making features such as air conditioning and power steering standard. Moving along the pristine, high-tech production lines of its Chennai plant are also cars for export to Europe, Russia, and Latin America. Outside the plant, a vast sea of new cars, some 65% of them earmarked for export markets, fills Hyundai's orderly lots. "My only problem," says Lheem Heung-Soo, managing director of Hyundai India, "is limited capacity." He's ramping up production fast: So are all his rivals.

Is a 4 Cylinder engine wimpy for a sports car like a Mitsubishi Eclipse?

sports cars 4 cylinder image

Johnny

hey, im looking at getting this black 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse. i really like everything about it. but the only thing im kind of upset about is the 4 cylinder engine that it has... i want a car that goes fast and is powerful and everything. so do you think a 4 Cylinder engine is too small or wimpy?

Answer
A 4 cylinder is great on gas but it is not fast. An import isn't fast since the most they go up to is a V6 so if you want a powerful fast car you should get something with a V8.

How popular is a 91 Mitsubishi eclipse?

Jon

I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse Gsx Turbo. It has an oil leak on the bottom. I am trying to decide to sell it or repair it. If I sell it, I want at least 1k for it. I only have to fill up the tank once a month and that is because I do not want it less then a quarter tank. I love this car except that it is an automatic.

My question, is how popular of a car is this? Especially being a 1991. It is a 4 cylinder sports car.

Answer
First, it's not a sports car. It's nothing like a sports car. Sports cars are lightweight (your GSX is 3100lbs, barely lighter than my V8 mustang), rear wheel drive (GSX is AWD, all other eclipses are FWD), 2 seat, 2 door (eclipse is 2 door, but 4 seats) roadster (that means convertible ONLY). Now, as for how popular it is, depends on how old you are. They are very popular among young kids, in the 16-19 age range, mainly because you can go relatively fast for relatively cheap (although you'll spend a fortune repairing it when you do go faster). Once you get into 25+ year olds, it's just another old, ragged out economy car with a hairdryer (turbo).
