How does an experienced Teacher in NYC relocate to California?

MthrNature

My friend is a teacher in Manhattan. She works with special ed/special needs children like autism. She has over 20 years experience as a tenured teacher. She clears more than 100K a year with amazing health, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.

My wife and I live in a small desert town 30 minutes from the main part of Southern California. There are malls and restaurants and other businesses so it isn't in the "sticks". However...What 100K here will buy a nicer house with land than 1 million can buy in Manhattan! My wife and I live in luxury after living in a dilapidated apartment in Manhattan for years, and for a lot more money.

My question is: How much do southern CA teachers make with 20 years experience and a master's degree. Can she transfer tenure here or would she be treated like all the new teachers out of school who get fired the whenever there are cutbacks.

I realize this is a jumbled question. I'm just trying to find out what it takes for an experienced teacher to relocate to southern california and if its easy to find a good paying job. Obviously if she can make 70K, she'd still live like a queen here in the desert over Manhattan.

Answer
I don't know what the rules are in California, nor what the pay scale is like.

But I have taught in more than one state and had to deal with different state requirements.

Your friend might be able to get a California teaching license without any trouble. But there might be different educational requirements. That means she might be required o take a course or two before getting a new license.

Then there's her salary. Again, I don't know the pay scale there, but usually a public school system will credit someone for years of service in another school system. These years might even be credited towards her retirement.

However, even if they have a tenure system in your local school system, it's unlikely that she will come into a new school system with any tenure at all. Most schools do not grant tenure for time served in other school systems! And some school systems have no tenure policy at all!

This is all assuming there is a job for her in your town! What with cut backs, many school systems are laying teachers off. It might be hard to find a job, even in an area of need like special education.

Also, NYC pays teachers VERY well, compared to most school systems. One reason is the high cost of living here. Since the cost of living is, by your own admission, lower where you are, it's unlikely she'll make anywhere close to the same amount of money. I doubt she'd make even close to $70,000!

I might also add that I would never want to leave NYC for a cheaper home in California. You may have some stores and restaurants, but it is no comparison to what is available here in NYC. And I would never want to live somewhere where I had to take a car all the time. I'm glad to live in NYC where things are just steps away. Walking is a great pleasure.

Is the maintenance for an infiniti M35 costly? which is more expensive the infiniti or mercedes?

yaboy .S.S

is the maintenance (oil change, up keep etc) of an infiniti M35 very costly or is it average. How costly is it in comparison the the mercedes c-class. and of the two vehicles which one has a better life expectancy?

Answer
The German competitors have always been more costly to maintain then their Japanese rivals. Both Lexus & Infiniti cost the same to maintain, they are certainly not cheap but they are considerably more affordable to upkeep then BMW, Audi & Mercedes Benz. Overall reliability is also a contributing factor to costs. Lexus & Infiniti have always been more reliable then their Germans rivals which consequentially makes them more affordable to maintain not to mention they come from the Toyota & Nissan branch making parts less expensive. I am a family owner of both German and Japanese so I have personal experience with them both, we have a 2010 Infiniti G37 sedan & a 2008 BMW 328i coupe. In terms of cost, an example like oil changes can cost you around $75-$85 for an Infiniti G while on a BMW 3 series you are looking at around $135 an oil change (If your BMW is no longer under factory warranty). When it comes to brand prestige the Mercedes Benz has always been the prime name when referring to luxury cars, its almost instinct but much has changed with the luxury market over the years giving way to Audi as a respected luxury brand and BMW as the best selling German brand. Mercedes Benz builds great cars but they have always been a manufacturer with a target for building refined luxury cars not so much luxury sport cars like BMW & Infiniti. The Infiniti M35 is one of the best performing mid-sized luxury sport sedans next to the BMW 5 series. Over all the Mercedes E-class is a nice car but for the year comparable to the 2006-2010 M35 sedan the Mercedes E-class of the previous generation from years 2006-2009 looks outdated and slow compared to some of its competitors like the BMW 5 series, Infiniti M and Lexus GS. Nevertheless much of the chemistry between Infiniti and Mercedes Benz has changed this year, although they continue to be rivals it seems that they are now relatives as well. Infiniti & Mercedes Benz are now partners since the beginning of 2012, the 2014 Infiniti G sedan is expected to ride on the same platform as the Mercedes C-class with a longer wheel base. Also news that has surfaced today is that Audi designer and president Johan de Nysschen left Audi for Infiniti today making Johan the new Senior Vice president for Infiniti. Infiniti will essentially be the first luxury brand with the reliability of the Japanese and with the DNA of the Germans. With Infiniti being the TOP Formula 1 sponsor holding on to the #1 F1 champion Sebastian Vettel, being partners with Mercedes and inheriting Audi Chief Johan, Infiniti is expected to be a huge hit in the market as the #1 Japanese Luxury competitor.

How much do car prices go down?

I want to get a 2008 Infiniti g37 Sports car, but right now they're around 30 thousand. Since they've already been out for a year in 2010 how much will they go down? Or what about around Christmas will they have any sales?

Answer
Regardless of what year it is, the dealer paid X amount for the car, they won't go below that, so somewhere close to invoice is what you can expect from the dealer at best. You can look up invoice at Edmunds.com

Any additional discounting will be in the form of factory incentives and Nissan ain't big on incentives. I would guess somewhere around 1500-2000 would be the most you could expect from them.

Any know of a good website to find project cars?

Pretty self-explanatory really. Does anyone know where I can browse some good project cars online. Maybe nice sports cars that have been in accidents or even old classics that have just never been restored. Lookin for a cool project to do with my dad. I am capable of restoring a car inside and out so experience isn't an issue. Thanks.

Answer
first off do you know what type of car you are looking for? there is this blog site where there is a post about the top 10 drift cars reviewed maybe you'd like to check it out first and the owner of that site also owns a car shop I've actually bought my mitsubishi eclipse from him you can scan through the site and check which car is for sale.

What car should I get for under $10,000?

I am a 16 year old guy and have had my mom's old mini van for a while now (2007 Chrysler T&C). You can see why I want to get rid of it. Anyways, for a replacement I would like a sedan with a V6 in it, but I live in MN and it sometimes snows pretty bad and the roads get slippery. We are planning on buying snow tires but would that be enough? Do I need AWD? I have been looking at the 2003 Infiniti g35 and the 2007 Ford Fusion. What should I do? What car has the power, but also safe and good in winter? I also have not gotten around to driving a stick yet, so no manuals.

Answer
2007 Ford Fusion V6 AWD for the win!!! Great car, plenty of power and AWD for those snowy MN days.

Honda and Toyota are great too but that Fusion is really the cat's meow.

In response to the answer below. FYI I'm an ASE certified master tech and a Massachusetts Licensed collision estimator. Unless you're wealthy, stay away from Audi, BMW and Mercedes; they're very nice luxury cars, they handle great and accelerate well BUT they are very expensive to repair and maintain. Most Mercedes models are RWD standard as are most BMW models, most of them have an AWD option. If you're handy and think that you can do the work yourself think again when it comes to many newer models of German cars. They require some pretty expensive equipment to do a service as simple as an oil change or a brake job. 2003 and newer Mercedes e-class vehicles (211 chassis) have electronic brakes, you need a scan tool to retract the pistons on the caliper, you need a SDS scan tool to check the automatic transmission fluid level as well as the motor oil level. To get around the laws currently out there you can press a button on the instrument cluster to see if the level is acceptable and add fluid till the light goes out but it's hard work to do so without the dealer equipment.

The model Ford Fusion you mentioned is available with an automatic transmission, AWD and a powerful V-6 motor. It's not that technologically advanced but has all the bells and whistles you need to be comfortable.

I recently stopped buying Honda products due to the lack of quality in the K-series 4 cylinder motors; Honda K motors have issues with oil consumption. January 2013 I picked up a Ford Focus ST and I'm very happy with it so far. I put 20,000 miles on it so far and absolutely love it.

Which car should I buy? Luxury sports cars?

Robby

I'm looking to buy a used car for under 10k. My top choice is a 2002-2004 audi a4. Other cars I am considering are audi a6, bmw 325xi, and saab 9-3. I live in MN so all wheel drive is a plus. Looking for a good looking luxury car.

However, I keep reading about how costly audi's and bmw's are to maintain. I don't have the money to pour thousands into repairs.

What is a reliable good looking car that is in my price range?

How is the Mitsubishi Lancer GTS classified by most insurance companies?

Steve C

I've been researching insurance quotes in preparation for buying a new (used) car, mainly for various sporty compact sedans. When I got to the 2010 Mitsu Lancer GTS, I was pretty appalled at how much higher the quote was than the others, like the Subaru Impreza and Mazda3 Sport, despite having extremely similar horsepower, speed, safety features and crash test ratings. Is it considered a sports car or something? Does it get lumped in with the uber-expensive Evo because of the word "Lancer"?

Answer
You should be asking your insurance agent these questions, not a bunch of Yahoo's! Tell the insurance company you're interested in a quote on a Mitsubishi Lancer and give him the VIN, don't tell them it's turbo charged.

What car should I get for my 16th birthday?

iiTimmmy

I have 250,000 dollars. thats all my mom is letting me spend for a car. I want a fast sports car, but luxury. But really fast and comfortable. What car should I buy?

Answer
Choosing your teen's first car can be a rocky process, especially when your child wants the latest, coolest car and you were thinking more along the lines of safety. Learn how to choose a first car that will please you and your teen.
1.
Step 1

Speak to your teen about driving. Enroll them in driving school and accompany them for drives with their learner's permit. The more involved you are in your teenager's driving experience, the more likely they are to heed your advice when the topic shifts to their dream car.
2.
Step 2

Make your child work for the car. Require her to take on more chores, bring home straight A's or tutor a sibling.
3.
Step 3

Research automobile resources, such as Vehix, Edmunds, and Cars Direct. These websites provide safety ratings, automobile reviews, pricing, car quotes and insurance information.
4.
Step 4

Communicate with your teenager. Learn what colors and models he likes, but let them know that you have the final say in which car is picked.
5.
Step 5

Go for a reliable model. Honda Civics are affordable and dependable cars that last a long time. Sure, your child may crave the newest BMW, but go for affordability and safety. Luxury can come later.
6.
Step 6

Speak with your insurance company. Find out the costs of adding a new driver to your policy and research which cars will cost you how much. Obviously, a sports car will cost more to insure than a sedan. Try to find a balance that will appease both your teen and your wallet.

What is high mileage for an used motorcycle?

sports cars 70k image

alejo.rock

Cars are high 100,000+ what about motorcycles? 33,000 a lot?

Answer
A Japanese water-cooled motorcycle, the engine is just as reliable and long-lived as a Japanese car. 100k miles is just properly broken in. 8^)

Air-cooled bikes don't last as long because the engine operates under a wider range of temperatures, but even a modern air-cooled bike should last 75-100k miles, then need new rings, maybe new valves, and be ready to go another 75k miles. I have a 1978 BMW that I ride almost every day. It's got 70k miles on it, and it's gone through one set of rings, but still has the original valves, and the original clutch.

But in the real world, it depends on how the bike's been taken care of. The really super sport bikes (GSX-R, CBR, R1/R6, etc.) have a narrow power band up near the redline, and a really 'enthusiastic' rider can thrash one of these in 30k miles. Things like oil changes and valve adjustments are really crucial. Also, many bikes tend to just sit in a garage for several years, and there are things that wear out faster on a bike if it's -not- ridden.

Normally you should never be afraid of a bike with 33,000 miles on it. But you have to look at the previous owner and make a judgement as too whether he cared for the bike properly.

Porsche cayenne or BMW x6 or a sports coupe like an Aston Martin db9 or Audi r8.Any ideas?

rohit

I'm looking for my first car and I have budget of 50-70k. I'm not sure whether to go for a new suv like a Porsche cayenne or BMW x6 or a sports coupe like an Aston Martin db9 or Audi r8.Any ideas?

Answer
FIrst of all, if you did your research, you will have found that it is very unlikely to find a DB9 or R8 in existence for under 70K. If you do happen to find one in that price range, you should be extremely wary. Used exotics have a reputation for poor reliability and high maintenance costs. Cars that are more likely to be found in the 50-70K price range would be a used: Ferrari 360, AM V8 Vantage, Mercedes SL, Maserati Quattroporte or Bentley Continental GT, new: BMW M3, Audi S5 or a Porsche Cayman.

Secondly, what type of car you need depends on your lifestyle. If you have kids, or haul around lots of things get the X6. The the new generation Porsche Cayenne has just been introduced and won't be on sale for another couple of months, making any Cayenne you may buy right now old news. If you don't really care about that, great job, you probably saved yourself a lot of money off the MSRP as dealers are trying to make room in their lots for the newer cars. I personally would never get a car that's just been replaced by a newer generation.

The X6 is a great car. I think it looks very nice (contrary to the opinions of many other people) and it drives like a sedan. An even more practical car would be the X5, as the X6 is short on rear headroom, seats only four and has a smaller trunk. However, the X6 is much better to drive. I've driven an X5 xDrive35i and it felt sluggish.

The Mercedes ML 550 is aging, but it is a very great car to own and drive. I have a ML 500 and I can tell you it is a great car to drive and very practical for many things. However a replacement is due in 1-2 years.

What kind of car you should get is entirely up to you.

I'm planning on getting a sports car, but I'm not quite sure which one I want..

I would prefer a Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan.. but anything else is fine to.

Please answer some suggestions. : )

Answer
As stated by other posters, you need more info here. Most essential is your budget. You can get a sports car for anywhere from $10K (like a Mazda Miata) to $1M for some Super Cars.

It would be also helpful to know if you are looking for a true sports car (typically 2 door/2 seater) or a sporty car (which could include sedan and hatchbacks). Here is a breakdown by price for you though, in my opinion these are all great cars.

Super Cars - way expensive - McClaren 12C GT3, Koenisegg Agera R, Mercedes SLS AMG, Bugatti Veyron, Lexus LFA, Porsche 911 GT2, any Lamborghini, any Ferrari

Super Cars - expensive - Ford GT, Corvette ZR1, Audi R8, Nissan GT-R, Mid level Porches, Viper, any Mercedes with AMG engine,

Sports Cars - expensive - Other Vettes, Low level Porches, BMW M series, Audi RS4 (sedan - Last production year was 2007 in USA), Cadillac CTS-V coupe, Lotus Exige/Elise

Sports Cars - Mid Range - Mustang GT (New model only), Nissan 350/370 Z, Subaru WRX STI (rally), Ariel Atom 3, Infinity G35 Coupe, BMW 135i, Audi S4 (sedan), Audi S5, Audi TTS, Camaro SS, Challenger SRT8

Sports Cars - Cheaper - Honda S2000, Audi TT, Mitsuibishi Lancer Evolution (rally), Subaru WRX (rally), Mazda Speed3 (hatchback)

May have missed some but that's a good list.

What Lexus is fast but is not considered a sports car?

Scott

I want a nice car that goes fast but is not classified as a sports car.

Answer
The only Lexus I would classify as sports cars would be an IS-F, the LFA and perhaps an SC, which they don't even make anymore.

A fast Lexus that I wouldn't consider a sports car would be an IS 350, although I would call it a "sport sedan".

That said, don't worry about it. It sounds like your question is based upon worry over insurance costs, and contrary to popular belief, there is no simple classification of "sports car" that makes a car more expensive to insure.

Insurance costs are based on many complex factors, to include coverage limits, where you live and where the car is kept, how much you drive, your age, marital status, sex and driving record, and finally, the characteristics of the car itself.

The car characteristics that matter most include its value, how often that model gets stolen, what kind of safety features it has that lessen the chance of a wreck or lessen the chance of injury should one occur, and what typical reapair costs might be.

The risk factors for how it might be driven (i. e. "is it a sports car") are more about you (marital status, age, sex, driving record), not the car itself.

Finally, you can always get an insurance quote on a car, regardless of whether or not you own it. If you're considering a couple of different cars, just call up your insurance company (or go online) to get quotes for each car you're considering. You'll then have the info you need to understand if the purchase makes sense for you.

You're being smart to consider all costs of ownership in advance, not simply just the purchase price. Car ownership costs are mostly about the long term (gas, insurance, maintenance), not simply the purchase price.

Good luck!

I have an old Chevy pickup truck that has been sitting out in the backyard for years. It hasn't run in forever and I'm pretty sure that almost everything needs replaced. Is it impossible to restore? And is it going to be impossible to pay for?
The year is around 1950

Answer
Kendal, we that love cars dont ask if its possible we ask how do I start. the old truck 1st must be examined by you for rust conditions to the frame and main body area's. this will deside for you the direction you will go. If the frame is waisted by rust a good quality resto will be costly and possibly not worth the cost, though some models of old trucks can still be. another option is to build a street cruiser model. in this case a race frame or modified frame system, mustang 2 front steering, modern V8 engine etc. these cars are desirable (trucks) because they run great, handle good and look old but good. I have a 57 Ford short bed wrapped rear glass and sport 500 plus horse power of big block Ford. I am less a body man than engine and still need to do the exterior and interior.

Is it normal to romanticize/fantasize about anything?

sports cars racing games on Car Racing Game Machine, simulator machine, amusement machine,Simulator ...

Y

I pretty much romanticize about a lot of things when I'm not with someone. I sometimes romanticize about girls during my sleep.
Like I've heard of too much of anything is bad for you, but for here it's literally impossible for me to do so when listening top any type of music that I love or when I'm not really tired at night. Whenever I'm dead tired or just drunk, I just pass the fuck out so I'm not worried.

I love fantasizing also whenever I workout on the treadmill. Usually I fantasize about sport cars, street racing, WWIII, chasing someone through the streets, being an assassin in a club, or using martial arts against people with guns.
I love playing video games that are extremely related about the events, but I don't actually fantasize about the events in the story...instead they're always my own ideas but they're exceptionally dramatic. Literally, it's as if I'm watching a film in my own head.

Is this bad for me in anyway shape or form? Am I inevitably preparing myself for what is about to come? Am I just an adrenaline junkie?

Is it normal? Do the majority of people do this?

Answer
I do this excessively and am wondering the same thing. I think it can be considered daydreaming. I am in my head all day long thinking of scenarios, conversations I might have, etc.

The stories are so real you get lost and almost addicted to the feeling.

What are some good songs for a racing game soundtrack?

Jared Chon

I need to know some songs because I want to make a good sountrack for the racing games I play. I like electronic, rap, some rock, etc. Thanks! I want music to get my pumped up.

Answer
If you are racing old school muscle then rap is the way to go. You can also listen to some old school rock. For exotics some house/electro music. If your racing a sports car (with racing vinyls) nothing because you'll want to hear the tires screech and the engine roar. With a tuner i guess you can with rock.

MEASURED FROM THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.
1) What is it called and where is it?
2) What is the "altitude"?
3) How much higher is it than Mt. Everest?
4) Does that higher altitude have any physics significance?

Answer
Mount Everest

It is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. Not surprisingly the highest point on the earth's surface is located there on the border of Nepal and China. Although the exact height of the mountain have been disputed by surveyors for many years the most recent measurement revealed the mountain to stand at 8850 meters, nearly 5.5 miles. The adventure that led to this result took place in May 1999. Bill Crouse and his crew set an expedition to find the height of this point. Six months later they returned and claimed to have found the exact measurement of the highest point on earth's surface.
Mount Everest is the highest peak in the Himalayan mountain range. People were unaware that it was the tallest mountain in the world until 1856. George Everest of India made the discovery. Plate tectonics show that the height of Everest is still increasing at a steady rate of approximately one centimeter (0.394 inch) per year.

Mount Everest is over 8000 m above sea level. Winds travel at 161 kilometers per hour; the windchill is often 96 degrees Celsius below zero. At such high altitudes as Everest, less oxygen is able to enter the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. The amount of oxygen usable for breathing is determined by pressure in the atmosphere. The greater the atmospheric pressure the closer the oxygen molecules. At high altitudes, atmospheric pressure decreases, and air molecules are further separated. Therefore there is less oxygen that is able to enter the lungs.

Though most people have recognized the highest point at Mount Everest, Mount Chimborazo located in the city of Rimobamba, Ecuador may also be considered as the highest point on earth. Although it is not as well known as Mount Everest, standing at 6310 meters it is also quite remarkable. Mount Chimborazo can be regarded as the highest point on earth because the planet is widest at the equator. The summit of Mount Chimborazo is then 3219 m further from the center of the earth than Mount Everest, making it what some consider the highest point. On the summit of Mount Chimborazo people will weigh less than any other location on earth.

As the highest point on the earth's surface, Everest has become the ultimate challenge for any determined high altitude climber. A group led by George Mallory first attempted it in 1921, however the summit was not reached until 1953 when Sir Edmand Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of New Zealand survived the challenging task. Edward Whymper of Britain was the first man to successfully reach the summit of Mount Chimborazo in 1880.

One of the highest places you can take your car is to Ojos del Salado in Chile. This is the world's tallest volcano at about 22,560 feet. If you live in the U.S. and want some place closer to home, try Colorado. It's many tall moutain peaks make for good high altitude driving.

"And then thereâs the Volkswagen exec, who stands up and announces that his company now holds the world record for highest altitude attained by a stock vehicle. Rainer Zietlow, some guy who claims heâs attained fame by taking stock vehicles to extremely high altitudes, piloted a stock Toureg with the base 3.2L V6 to the peak of Chiles Ojos del Salado, the worlds tallest volcano. Guiness marks the record altitude at 19,950 feet. Perhaps VW should tag its Toureg with the title of âBest Luxury SUV above sea-levelâ."

The other claim to the highest road (therefore the highest place accesible by car) on Earth is the Manali-Leh route (300 miles) just north of Lahore in the Indian Himalayan mountains.

It crosses four high passes which range in height from 14,000 to 18,000 feet.

At Leh, the Khardung La, claims to be the highest point.

The link below is to a very old army map showing some of the route.

What is the most reliable, affordable, and low-maintenance used cars under 8k?

Zaza Zezo

I'm considering Camry, Accord, and Altima. I'm also thinking about Lexus, or Acura but I'm afraid of the maintenance cost.

Answer
Maintenance on an Acura won't be any more than a Honda. They are both built by the same company. Lexus is built by Toyota.

I wouldn't consider a Lexus or Acura affordable, both are high end luxury brands and an Acura TSX will cost you several thousand dollars more than a comparably equipped Accord.

Finding a Lexus or Acura under $8000 is going to be very difficult. Finding a Toyota or Honda for $8000 is easy.

I know limos are the most common way to get to prom, but my girlfriend and I would like to rent a luxury car and driver, so it's more romantic....does that sound okay? Or dumb?

Answer
Honey, whatever floats your boat is fine.

I took my brother's fiat uno. It was hilarious, surrounded by all the limos and hummers etc.

I'm looking for a nice car to ride in with my friends for prom, where should I go to rent one?

orangepeel

I live in Atlanta by the way. Any suggestions on the car would be beneficial as well.

Answer
Are you talking high end. If you are go to google. type in the make or luxury cars. On the right side of the screen you will see the local rental companies for high end cars. Or also look in the online yellow pages. Sometimes you can rent cars such as porshe for 50 dollars a night.

How beautiful is it to watch sunset from Galvestan, Texas?

sports cars naples florida image

Ronq

Planning a vacation there, but it depends on how beautiful the sunset is from Galvestan Texas.
Shore actually faces southeast which I think the sunset won't be visible, but what do u think?
I mean the sun won't be setting over by the ocean.

Answer
LIVE HERE- native 40+ years
Yes its pretty. Yet, incredible sunset on water is Caribbean islands, Hawaii and Naples Florida. I have seen them all, its my "thing" to do sunsets.

Galveston-
Moody Gardens Hotel is incredible! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. stayed there over a dozen times myself.

Don't plan to get in the gulf water, its just gross!
No beach bunny things here- its a fishing environment.
This is too industrial to be safe in the water. TRUST ME>
The hotel pool is the best place to "water sport". There are several Man made water areas, made to look orginal, to play in. Go for that. I would "Stick" to the water parks, close by the hotel.

If you like tourist things, then come ON, their is tons to do here and your an hour away from Houston, and you will be so busy it hurts! You will get the best FOOD in the world. Come see NASA, totally worth it. This is a huge international city, its a port city most folks forget that. So we have tons of diversity, and all are welcome.
Bring lots of money, things are cheap here and you can load UP on stuff. Folks are friendly and helpful . Come soon, by August it is HELL....literally, the temps are so hot, you would rather die than be outside.

Have fun! Hope to see ya here!
Galveston gets its news from Houston.
Go to the Houstonchronicle.com that's the local news paper. the Houstonpress is the other for events going on.
KPRC channel 2[NBC] is a local tv station, so you can go online and check it all out.
Check out MoodyGardens, they are well defined and totally an experience in its self. A true gem in the Galveston crown.

Wear walking shoes- the streets are old and rough.
Carry a bottled water and dress in cool layers, the sun will burn ya bad here.

You can do the "historical" strand, be sure to go to the museum and the "treemont" hotel for lunch, see the "Elissa" sailboat, it is a sight to behold, I recommend you dine at the restruant at brunch on Sunday and watch all the dedicated volunteers working on the boat. It is incredible the love and detail they pay to her.

You will need to rent a car or drive, this city is too large and no transport covers it all effectively. Fly into Hobby Airport or you will drive some 2+ hours to get Galveston from Bush Airport, it can take up to 3-4 hours in traffic. No joke.

How do I work through these issues with my mom? Easy Ten?

Q. I'm an 18 year old girl who is very responsible, never drank, smoked, gotten in serious trouble or gone to a party. Ive devoted my whole life to sports as I want to turn pro in golf someday and live in Naples, Florida, I've been there a lot and I love the area. But there are a few issues I want to work out with her.

Boys-I have really liked this guy for 3 years. We've wanted to date for sooo long because we are best friends and understand each other. But because when he was little, he was in my moms class and he struggled with English, she told me I couldn't date him, and when my Aunt was here last month, even got my aunt to yell at me for dating him. I asked her why and she said because he was idiotic, special ed and shorter than me. I was like mom height doesn't matter and you haven't seen him in 5 years he isn't the same person, so I want a valid reason why we need to break up, and when I said that she literally stopped talking and just hummed for about 2 hours until I got so miserable I broke up with him.

License-I have my drivers license now, and we have 3 cars in our house that my dad had said I could drive one of them. My dad said you are a new driver but as long as you ask, and don't do any drives outside the city until you get more practice, you are fine with me to drive. So I told my dad I was going to get flour today at the store, 5 minutes away from my house (my mom needed it!) he said okay, and I went, totally fine with driving, obeyed everything. But as soon as my mom found out, she screamed at me to go home right now and I'm suspended from driving indefinetley, even though on Tuesday I need to drive to the school I am doing a teacher internship at. (My mom said to walk: school is 30 minutes away there and back for walking, our class time is an hour for the internship.) She said I am a ****** driver, I said the only reason I am with her is because she screams at me in the car to the point where I get so nervous I am crying.)

Social Stuff-I am expected to ride the bus everywhere for the rest of high school and college, just because my mom did it when she was my age. I explained to my mom I am sick and tired of riding the bus, because I am the only upperclassmen, I ride the bus with middle schoolers! she said oh well suck it up that's how I did it. And then I told her I could not ride the bus to the community college because there is no bus that goes past the community college, and she goes I did that growing up and you will too. She also gets pissed off at me when I don't talk to her in public, she knows I am shy like my dad but she still screams at me, I asked her politely to stop poking me and she says I will spank your ass because you are being so rude to me.

How in the hell am I supposed to work through these issues with her? This isn't fair to me anymore!!!!!!! she cant see anything my way, and she gets very uptight when stuff doesn't go her way, she tells me that she doesn't understand what im talking about and to leave her alone when I try to explain something to her and ask her to be more open minded. I don't get it and its frustrating! She also still babies me by making my lunch in the morning, cleaning up my room and brushing my hair in the morning. She has yet to teach me how to wash clothes either, and I am just fed up with it! I love her so much but how can I work through these issues with her!!!!!

Answer
Your mom seems messed up in the head a bit.

Try asking your dad to talk to her. See if he can have her tone it down.

im going out of dc to chicago so im looking for a van to rent with free miles and good price...

Answer
Most likely you have already checked the major rental car companies like HERTZ, AVIS, BUDGET and DOLLAR at the Metro DC airports which we used when renting a minivan to move to/from college campuses.

Last year we rented a cargo van with unlimited mileage from NEXTCAR RENTAL that has Metro DC locations in Virginia and Maryland. They also carry & rent 12-15 passenger vans and even luxury automobiles with unlimited mileage but viewing the daily rate for a 12-15 passenger van in excess of $100 is not cheap, but worth considering as a possible alternative.

Please keep in mind that if you're driving to Chicago I am not sure if all rental car companies legally allow you to drive that far out-of-state legally without their authorization...and it could cause big headaches if you're involved in an accident out-of-the area without their permission.

Hope the Above Info Helps!

My son is 6 and he keeps asking me to buy him GTA 4?

He plays all kinds of video games...But the ones that keep him more interested are the more popular like the Madden,Call of Duty and the GTA's.

Answer
I definately do not recommend Grand Theft Auto 4 for a 6-year old. Reasons why:
- very strong language
- violent (guns, fist fights, killing people)
- stealing cars
- oral sex and regular sex ARE shown
- ability to go to strip clubs
- killing cops
- drug reference
- nudity

Unless you consider these okay for your 6-year old (which I hope you don't), then I do not recommend getting him this game. Also keep in mind that GTA IV (as well as previous GTA's) have a Mature (M+) rating, which means you must be 17 years old to buy the game without parental consent.
Many anti-crime and anti-violence organizations are trying to get the rating to be pushed to Adults Only (AO), which would mean only 18 year olds can buy it and you can't get it underage no matter what. (even if you have parental consent.)

Even Call of Duty would be too violent for him as well. It is a war game, and you can kill people and you can see the blood after they have died. It is rated Mature (M+) (just like GTA), so it is still very bad. As for madden, I would definately recommend it, it is a football game so there is no violence in any way. However, some of the soundtracks have vulgar lyrics, but I wouldn't be too concerned about that. As for other fun games he may want to try other than GTA:

- Any sports videogame (2k sports and EA sports)
- Beautiful Katamari
- Blue Dragon
- Project Gotham Racing
- Lego Star Wars
- Guitar Hero (really recommend)
- Surf's Up
- Viva Pinata
- any other game rated Everyone (E+)

For more about game ratings, visit:
http://www.esrb.org/

I strongly recommend parents become more informed about what videogames their children are playing, so we don't have children playing games outside of their age ratings.

I am in Davie, I'm willing to travel to the Miami area as well. Thanks!!

ok. so here is the thing....i can pretty much get any vehicle i want. except a truck :p which is what i wanted! but apparently a truck isnt lady like so i have to get a car. so since i have to pick a car, i want a sporty lookig car! i had chosen a Mazda RX-8 but for some reason, i cant get it! so what other sports cars would you recommend for me?
please and thank you so much!

Answer
Hi. do you want a car that just looks sporty, or a car that is a real sports car ? If you want a real sports car with perfect driving dynamics, then the Porsche CaymanS with manual transmission is the way to go, if you love a precise feeling, perfectly balanced machine with world class motor, brakes, transmission, sports car interior, chassis, etc. (and no gimmicks). The new 370Z is nice but the CaymanS kicks the hell out of it in driving dynamics, and I like to heel and toe myself thank you. BTW, the CaymanS also smokes the 370Z, not that straight line performance is the most important factor. So if price in not much of a factor, go for the CaymanS (about $60K). BTW, the RX-8 was also and excellent choice, especially with the manual transmission, the automatic is much slower, and a true sports car should not be an auto ! Why was the RX-8 ruled out ? It does use a lot of fuel (more than a Mustang GT), but it's a great sports car. Also,
the new NSX is coming out soon, the S2000 is a very nice sports car also, and the 911 is always great but closer to $80k with options.

What is the price for a used 2005 Scion tc?

raco

I have $10k and I wanna get a used 2005 Scion tc. Is that possible? Or should I get some other kind of cool sport car that costs at most $10k? Thanks.

Answer
Too broad...
Low mileage (15K-40K mls)...about $12-15k
Under $10k is possible but should have high mileage about 60-80k mls...
You could get Honda S2000 with about 12k...
Check your local listings...
