I was wondering if a car with four seats can be considered a sports car?

It depends on your definition of 4 seats. In earlier times, they had cars known as " 2 + 2" which was a 4 seat car but, you didn't get comfortable in the back seat; you were there for the ride because it was a place to sit down.
4 seats = yes
4 doors = sports "sedan", NOT sports car. Sports Cars NEVER have 4 doors ONLY 2 doors can be Sports Cars !

Me and my friend are in an argument considering if a lancer was really a sports car outside of the united states.

omg i hate it when people get so obnoxious for the definitions of cars. a car can be a sports car despite having rear seats. if not try to race a miata with an audi S8 and see the sports car get its butt whooped. while there are varying degrees of how sporty a car can be, if they are designed for performance in mind particularly taking performance at the cost of other features like comfort, economy or usability then the car is a sports car.
here in canada, the lancer has a wide range of performance. the entry level lancer isnt really considered to be a sports car. it lacks power (less than 200 hp) has front wheel drive and doesnt have a sports tuned suspension. the ralliart and evo versions are different stories though, their increased power, AWD and tuned suspension give them performance that makes them sports cars.
also a sports car doesnt have to have 2 doors nor a v8. by that definition an audi rs7 or nissan gt-r wouldnt be sports cars because one has 4 doors and the other has a v6.
