The best car to buy with that sum of money is always a used one. You can get the very best deal from a used model that is still under warranty. However, for new cars one of the best for well under 40,000 is the Mazda Miata in terms of the drive. Brilliant chassis, very fun to drive, but if power and questionably "looking like a girl" is a concern then steer clear. As a personal choice I'd either go with a used Lexus IS-F (5L V8 just sounds awesome and goes hard, but the 8-speed auto with long gearing retards it a bit which does on the other hand improve fuel economy) or a brand new Subaru WRX STi 330S. Fully loaded it comes well under 40 large but it has a brilliant engine and dynamics tuned to 327hp (up from 300 on the standard STi) and some pretty solid luxury items that you'd find on your similar Audi and Beemer.
