Are there andy sport cars that aren't rear wheel drive?

The Audi TT, Mitsubishi GTO, Dodge SRT-4, Chevy Cobalt SS, Volvo C30, Volkswagen Scirocco, and the Scion tC are all available in front-wheel drive.

Are front wheel sports cars more fun to drive than rear wheel drive sports cars?

First, there have been very (very!) few FWD cars where you could even have a debate about "is it a sports car." So in order to have this question in the first place you would have to assume the existance of the FWD sports car. There are certainly some possible examples and pretenders, but real sports cars?

Let's pass on that for a moment and look at why sports cars bypass FWD: sports cars are, by definition, about sport, And motorsport is about performance. From an engineering perspective there is one reason and one reason only to make a car FWD - and that is, assuming the engine is in the front of the car, it is much cheaper to make it FWD. Every other reason about drive wheels are reasons not to have FWD (though, you can almost make an argument that FWD is more forgiving of panic induced resonses by unskilled drivers... so maybe two reasons for FWD if you include that).

The more you accelerate in a FWD car the less grip you have to your drive wheels. Given limits of grip and what a tire can do, you will experience understeer on corner exit when applying the power. These two issues alone mean that FWD is simply slower than other configurations... and as for pulling? I suppose if you were to add a bunch of trailers behind it that it would be somewhat similar experience to a rollercoaster, but still not really.

So, with all of that said: while you can find a particular FWD car that might be "more fun" than certain RWD cars, as a generalization, the gap between them is so great it's simple to just say "no, FWD 'sports' cars are not more fun than RWD sports cars." I've had fun driving a number of Mini Coopers before, and think Mazda has some decent FWD packages out there (though again, not sure any of these are actually sports cars)... but compared to a Porsche 911? A Ferrari 430 Scud? Not close. But you don't even have to go to those exptremes, they do not measure up to a Mazda Miata.

So again, in short: No.

Rear wheel drive cars are known to have better power distribution to the wheels and better traction on road surfaces.

Especially in sports cars, which are designed for performance, factors such as stability of the car under any road condition are essential.

Unlike a front wheel drive car, in which the engine delivers power to the front wheels alone. The rear wheels are simply being 'dragged' along with the rest of the vehicle. The function of the rear wheels in a front wheel drive car is simply to support the structure of the vehicle and nothing more than that. There is no traction in the rear of the car.

In a rear wheel drive car, all the power and traction is supplied to the rear wheels, while the front wheels are used to steer the car.

Over Steer - Suppose you are driving a nose heavy car (a car which has got a heavier front than the rear), going fast around a curve could result in the car losing traction (grip) from the rear end and having its back being flung outside the curve. Over Steer can also result from bad aerodynamics which fail to equalize downforce on the front and rear of the car, i.e. higher down force at the front and no or very low downforce at the rear.

Traction in the rear wheels is preferable as power delive

A sports car is a term used to describe a class of automobile. The exact definition varies, but generally it is used to refer to a low to ground, light weight vehicle with a powerful engine. Most vehicles referred to as sports cars are rear-wheel drive, have two seats, two doors, and are designed for more precise handling, acceleration, and aesthetics. A sports car's dominant considerations can be superior road handling, braking, maneuverability, low weight, and high power, rather than passenger space, comfort, and fuel economy.


We have to keep in mind when the original Delorean was manufactured. This was in 1981-1982. During that time, there was very little performance in any car. Fuel economy laws and environmental impact laws never mind a gas crisis made it hard for any manufacturer to have performance in their cars. The Corvette in 1981 had only 190 horsepower. The 1981 Porsche 911SC had only 204 horsepower. The 200hp Delorean (Euro-spec) was right in the mix with some of the best sportscars of the time. (US cars were delivered with 170hp due to catalytic converters that the Euro cars did not require). It's handling was also on par with the better sportscars of the era as well.

The Delorean was considered a sportscar because it was low to the ground, it was a two seater and it had considerable performance for cars at that time. And the Gull wing doors were really really cool for a car built in the 80's.

The 80's sucked for sports cars.

There are no FWD sports cars. Lots of 'sporty' FWD's as identified in earlier response.
