I'm going to college next year and I want a first car. Of course a first car will not be a luxury or a sports car unless its cheap. So do you know any good car cheaper than 18 thousand dollars?

thanks

Answer
Let me do you a BIG favor by offering my advice, based on hard learned lessons learned. I also just bought a new vehicle and did months of in depth research. I'll bottom line it for you.

First, stop thinking about cheap and small and instead, think SAFETY. Unless you have been involved in a serious accident, you really have no clue how important this is. It is too late once something happens and you are permanently disabled, can't walk or live in pain for the rest of your life- or worse. With texting and distracted driving, drinking and driving, etc., serious accidents are on the rise. With that said, I understand the whole college budget thing and you don't have to spend an arm and a leg but simply make a smart choice.

To be clear, make your decision based on SAFETY as your #1 criteria. The two websites to use to identify safer used (or new) cars include iihs.org and safercar.gov. Look for 4-5 star ratings ONLY. Obviously 5 is better. Rule of thumb, the heavier the vehicle, the safer it usually is. Also look for good visibility all around and especially the rear corners. They make vehicles today that close you in- this does make you more survivable which they can market as "5 start" BUT ironically it also statistically leads to more accidents (see insurance stats online) because you simply cannot see. From there, you can bargain hunt and look for decent MPG. I understand that small, cute cafe style cars (yaris, prius, etc.) seem trendy and cool and they sip gas but how much will your medical bills cost you if you get hit in one? Hint, one MRI is $2, 500- rehab about $20k if you are lucky; meds = $20k a year and much, much more- loss of work= $80k/year, etc. You get the idea. I know about this and know friends who were seriously injured in these "economy cars." Ironically, they are no bargain at all- in the long run.

Make your own decision but trust me, this is very, very good advise.

My Top picks in order based on your criteria + safety...

#1 Subaru Forester 2011 (very safe and 4 wheel drive; great visibility and handling in an SUV)
Not good on gas- burns a little oil and might be slightly over your 18k requirement BUT it's a trade-off. Again, it is VERY safe and in the long run, that could save your life and $$$. Has 5 star roof strength- it's a new safety criteria that means if you flip it, the roof will not crush. The CR-V basically failed this test.
The 2011 Forester also has the latest safety technology e.g., smart and multiple airbags, stability control, traction control, anti lock brakes, emergency brake assist (if you hit them hard, it senses an emergency and automatically multiplies the force to the pedal), daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, an engine that is designed to drop safely to the ground in the case of an accident.

Chevy Equinox 2010-12 - great and very safe.

Chevy Malibu 2008-12

Subaru Outback 2010-12

Volvo S60 2011-12

Ford Taurus 2010-12

Looking for different types of classic sports cars?

Nick

I really want to find a classic sports car. I dont want to find something so old that i can restore. More like a sports car that will be cheap so I can fix it up. Any ideas of cars that would be a great cheap buy? Only cars please no trucks. Any input would be much appreciated.
