I want to get a 2001 STS (77,000 miles), but my family keeps saying if I don't go with a foreign, I am going to have trouble, or atleast more trouble than If I would of got a foreign. But, If i went with a foreign, it would not be as high-class as a Cadillac, Cadillacs are considered luxury ...........................are foreign cars considered that much better than a Cadillac?

Answer
ON used cars ...

its a 2001 8 year Old Top of the Line car.

Cars all have problems and things can happen to any car at any time Batterys, alternators, tires, brakes, fuel, etc... Again anything at any time can go wrong. With any car ot truck.

ONLY 63 % of people try to service and take care of what cars and trucks they own and keep everything up to date.

11% just put Gas in and Drive and Have NO clue or don't care. They just don't care. Some of them shouldn't even be on the road. 2%

So Import Vs Caddy ....

If the 01 STS is 77K miles Clean and looks good.
its a great car as used cars go. The motor is Designed after the Corvette LT5 but for Front wheel drive call the NORTHSTAR that have a great track record over the years.

Price VS what needs to be Serviced on the car makes your value. Tires, brakes, tune-up, fuel filter ( last one replaced)

Import.... what can you find for the same price ? With the same track record. or the same Value ? Is what you have to look at.

If I could buy one for trade in value I would buy one.

But most ost more 4200 and up.

So they hold thier value on the used car market.

Good Luck shopping.

should i buy an used bmw if maintenance cost is a factor?

Dave

I'm curious how MUCH MORE is an older BMW's maintenance cost going to be versus something like a honda civic due to the fact that it is a BMW? We're talking 1999 BMW 3 series, nothing crazy. Already out of warranty, don't need to do the labor at the dealership necessarily.

I ask because I am looking for a used car and found a 1999 BMW 3 Series in good shape and also a 1999 honda civic. So assuming all things are equal, like mileage, condition, options, kbb, price, etc. is the BMW's maintenance cost going to be THAT much higher than the civic that I shouldn't buy it? I'm somewhat price sensitive. I do my own labor on things like fluid changes, filter changes but only worked on very popular cars, not luxury cars. I am not aware of how BMW maintenance operates and if you HAVE to do certain things at the dealer, if parts are much more expensive, if labor is something I cannot do myself like on a civic, etc.

Answer
I have a 199 bmw 323i. it's easy to work on. u only need a few special tools just to take the clutch fan off on the engine(not that expansive)ratchet and and few sockets. i haven't had to take my car to a shop i do all of it. and there are a TONS of do it yourself video and sites (e46fanatics.com, one that i use) all about the e46 (3 series). it is still expansive though to take it to a shop. parts are expansive depending where u buy them and what brand you want. always go oem though. Mine has 201k and still running. the reason i would take my car to the shop is if somethings is wrong with the transmission.
