For around $6,000 there are a lot of options. Look for some of these models from the early 1990s:
Chevrolet Camaro SS
Chevrolet Camaro Z-28
Chevrolet Corvette
Dodge Stealth R/T AWD
Ford Mustang GT
Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Ford Thunderbird Supercoupe
Jaguar XJS
Lexus SC 400
Lincoln Mark VIII
Mazda RX-7
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4
Nissan 300ZX
Pontiac Firebird Formula
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
Porsche 944 Turbo
Porsche 968 Turbo
Subaru SVX
Toyota MR-2 Turbo
Toyota Supra Turbo
The above models all have at least 200 horsepower (MR-2, which is incredibly light weight and also the only mid-engined car) and are either Rear-Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive (Dodge, Mitsubishi, and Subaru). They're 2-Door coupes, with a variety of engines. I know about this category because I'm looking at my future car from this category as well. I plan on spending no more than $8,000 as the absolute max. These models will all knock the stuffing out of an Integra or Eclipse (which are rated at "only" 200-210 horsepower and are Front-Wheel Drive, which isn't nearly as sporty or fun to drive).
Out of the above list, my personal favorites are the Porsche 944, Chevrolet Corvette, Lexus SC 400, Toyota MR-2, and Lincoln Mark VIII. The Chevrolet has 330 horsepower and is fiberglass-bodied for light weight. The Lincoln and Lexus are the sportiest luxury coupes you can buy, and have 290-300 horsepower V-8s. The Toyota only has 200 horsepower, but is the lightest car in the group, seats just two people, and has the best handling of all thanks to the light weight and a mid-engined configuration. The Porsche has a turbocharged 4-Cylinder, with 225-247 horsepower depending upon year and whether it's a Turbo or Turbo S, and the idea of owning a Porsche for under $10,000 is just cool.
One other thing to keep in mind, especially when modifying. The American cars (especially the Camaro, Mustang, and Firebird) are a lot easier to modify, easier to find parts for, and a lot cheaper to modify and repair. Also, they've got good old-fashioned performance straight from the factory. The top models (SS, SVT Cobra, and Trans Am) have over 300 horsepower. That, and they're rated higher in reliability than the Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru, all esteemed Japanese brands. Something about having more reliable engines than the three Japs. There's also lots of stories about Supras blowing engines when modifying. The Supras were meant to be left at factory spec. Modifying improperly causes the turbos and engine to fail (I've seen the ads in Autotrader many times when looking for one - body and interior excellent, low miles, all options, turbo bad - and they're insanely expensive to fix and modify properly)
I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more, please feel free to ask.

What would be a good car for a budget of $7K and how many miles should I expect it to have?
Over The R
I am looking for opinions so tell me your preferred make model and how many miles you think is too many and how many is reasonable
Answer
First is first. Nothing over 110,000 miles unless there has been a tune up or some major work done on it.
For $7000, milage really depends on the year of the car and the type of vehiacle.
Cars from japan(including luxury, entry level, SUV) 30-150k
Cars from Germany/other European brands(Volvo, Saab, etc) 60-110k
Cars from American 40-80k
These include luxury cars, so meaning that it would have higher milage if it's a more expensive car and lower milage if it's more of a entry level car.
Cars from Toyota would be under 140k
Honda under 130k
Chevrolet under 100k
MB under 70k
BMW under 70k
I've seen some 2006 Honda civics that go for about $6000 with around 50,000 miles on craigslist. Also there are plenty of good condition BMW 3-series around me going for about $6000 that range from 1999-2003.
