Quality of 70's cars versus today's?

Crockett

Isn't it sad how the general build quality of cars has gone down so much since the 70's and certain 80's vehicles? If you look at just about any 70's car like a 1975 Firebird for instance, you'll notice every little piece is so high quality and solid. Also, so much more of the car is made of metal and there's neat attention to detail on little things versus plain and cheaply made plastic junk everywhere.

Even today's high dollar luxury cars just don't compare to the build quality of a 70's base model Chevy. My grandpa just bought a 2007 Escalade, and it's luxurious but beneath the leather seats and Cadillac logos it just feels like a plastic 2007 Suburban to me.

Even many American cars in the 80's had that great vintage build quality. If you look at a 1987 Caprice for instance or most 80's GM trucks, they still used "real" metal and high quality parts all around.
Horsepower isn't everything, and that's just the stock power of those engines. You can build up a stock 350 to any hp you want, but you can't make a newer car the same quality as older ones.

They may not have air bags, but older cars hold up way better than newer ones. Plastic and thin metal vs. thick metal and no plastic = old car wins.

Answer
Just search the web for the 1959 Chevy Bel Air crash test versus the 2009 Chevy Malibu. That should tell you a lot about the good old "thick metal" cars of the early days.

While I do agree that the older cars were stylish and well designed (for their day and time) they are not even on the same page, when it comes to safety and performance of today's cars.

Why do luxury cars only have leather interior?

David

It's really, really hard to find a luxury car without leather seats. Veg*n's can't buy luxury cars because of this. Also, there are meat eaters who dislike leather as well. So why do most manufacturers require you to get leather in luxury cars?

Answer
its considered a luxury feature.

not all lincolns or cadillacs back in the 70's or 80's didnt have leather
