im thinking about getting a used bike and i dont know how many miles would be consider high for a bike? and what is a bike that has a fast 0-60 time that is affordable?

Answer
I asked the same question here on yahoo answers a while back. The correct answer is this.

The higher the cc's of the bike the higher the longer the engines can go.

Some guys will say "Yah but what if a 250cc engine was maintained but a 600cc engine was abused and oil never changed etc.." and if you compare it like that obviously the better taken care of motor lasts longer.

But let's say this. With everything be equal if the bikes were all maintained the same I gaurantee you that the engines that last longest are in this order.

250cc lasts on average 25000 miles
500cc lasts on average 50000 miles
600cc lasts on average 60000 miles
750cc lasts on average 75000 miles
1000cc lasts longest about 100,000 miles

The smaller the cc the higher they rev.

So try to find a bike with the highest cc's
In other words I would be willing to bet anything that a Ninja 250 will not last as long as a Ninja zx10 because the zx has 1000 cc but the 250 has 250 cc's

Now on some bikes, like the Kawasaki Ninja 250, you can find engines cheap on ebay. For example a ninja 250 engine can be bought right now on ebay under $500.00 so some bikes you don't have to even really worry about engines as they are so inexpensive you can just buy another engine rather than paying to have it rebuilt.

Go to ebay.com and look for motorcycle engines you'll find them cheap.

I know you didn't ask this but I would be amiss to not mention to you the most important thing (In my opinion this is most important) as a rider.

IMPORTANT: Get a bike that is tailored to your needs!

For example. Should you get a lighter bike or a heavier bike?
Both answers are correct for the bikes particular circumstance.

If you are going to be riding on the street get a light bike like 300+ lbs. You want a light bike for street riding and curves..

However if you are going to be going interstates/freeways where there is no stop and go but straight, and long drives (More than 20 miles) get a heavier bike like 500lbs or 400+ lbs.

Why? A light bike sucks on the freeways as you get blown all over and its not fun nor enjoyable. If you are going short distances on a freeway its not bad but if more than a few minutes that crud gets tiring and it feels unsafe. So for highways do not ever get under a 600cc bike and make sure its not a light bike or you will blow all over and you will regret your decision the first minute on the freeway.

I'll give you an example. I used to own a ninja 250 and it is awesome for streets. You can drive far distances and never be tired and its awesome on gas and will go 70 or 80+ or more but on the freeways it blew all over and was no fun.

I got a zx10 instead and the bike is heavier like 500lbs but it stays planted on the freeways. Since I mostly go freeways to work and back I get great mpg so gas is not a problem it is saving me gas. However if I were going to ride on the streets a lot I would have stayed with the Ninja 250 or Ninja 500.

Re: 0-60 time, even the Ninja 250 which is considered a new riders bike, has a better 0-60 time than 95% of the cars out there.

All in all though you gotta trust me on this, your main concern after riding will be the wind and the weight of the bike.

So here are some rules of thumb to follow
Heavy bike is safer on freeways
For freeways don't dare go under 600cc

For streets get a lighter bike. Now, sometimes folks will say "What if I go both freeways and streets?" I would say this..If you are going on the freeways about oh 5% of the time and not often and not long distances, then a light bike is ok. But if you are going on the freeway every now and then and more than 5% of the time and more than 10 miles or so...then do not get a light bike. Get at least 400lbs or more.

I have looked and looked and researched bikes and have also rode a lot of them and for the money here is the TOP LIST OF BIKES.

RICH'S TOP 5 LIST OF BIKES FOR THE MONEY!

#1 Best starter bike for the person on a budget of $1000-$2000
The winner is The Ninja 250 by Kawasaki. You can get a good quality bike used on ebay or craigslist.com Not recommended on freeways but is legal on freeways and I have ridden on freeways many times on one. Very light bike and is the only 250 sport bike available in the United states..most people don't know that.

#2 THE HEAVY BIKE FOR THE PERSON ON A BUDGET
For freeways you can get a Suzuki Katana 600 cc bike or 750 cc. I have seen these for sale all day long for $2000 or a tad under or over $2000 The bike is not for the beginner as its a very heavy bike but that is good if you are riding freeways! However if you tip it over only God almighty and all your strength will be able to lift it up again. I don't recommend this bike for skinny people that are new to riding. However anybody that has experience riding will be fine with common sense. Excellent on freeways.

#3 BEST NEW BIKE FOR PERSON ON A BUDGET
If you want your mouth to water like a thirsty man in the dessert, go to Kawasaki.com and click sport bike and then 2008 NINJA 250 You'll see a video of a $3000+ bike NEW!
And this thing is....Awesome. However I'd like to jump in here with a personal opinion...

If you were to buy the Ninja 250, 2008 year, by the time you left the dealer you would have paid easily $4000.00 for a new one. So I would wait a year until you can get them used...and in my opinion if I had $4000 I would get the bike in the next paragraph.

#4 BEST USED BIKE FOR PERSON WITH $4000 give or take..
If you have a bit under $4000 maybe a little less or more..depending on the deal you get,..take a look at the Suzuki sv or suzuki sv650. You can get the bike naked, that is without fairings, but you don't want that. For freeways you want it FULL FAIRING and if you go to ebay.com or craigslist.com you'll see these bikes...Very sexy, very hot..and they are awesome to ride.

#5 GODS FAVORITE BIKE
Legend has it that when Yahmaha made the R1 and it just came out of the factory...they rolled it out into the test track. As the rider approached it the heavens opened up and voice thundered down from heaven and it said "Rider! Take off your boots, you are walking near hallowed ground" The R1 is a bike but its also a peace of art that the rider can become one with. If money is no object...the R1 is one Righteous 1 to get.

Behold the r1 below:
If someone has never ridden before even the slowest bike will feel great to them as most bikes are faster than most cars.

Looking for a fast car/potentially fast car recommendation that's within budget and cheap to insure?
