What is a good, mildly fast first car for around $6000?

Chris G

i was thinking like an eclipse gst, acura integra. it doesnt matter if it is domestic of foreign.

THANKSSS!!!!

Answer
For around $6,000 there are a lot of options. Look for some of these models from the early 1990s:

Chevrolet Camaro SS
Chevrolet Camaro Z-28
Chevrolet Corvette
Dodge Stealth R/T AWD
Ford Mustang GT
Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Ford Thunderbird Supercoupe
Jaguar XJS
Lexus SC 400
Lincoln Mark VIII
Mazda RX-7
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4
Nissan 300ZX
Pontiac Firebird Formula
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
Porsche 944 Turbo
Porsche 968 Turbo
Subaru SVX
Toyota MR-2 Turbo
Toyota Supra Turbo

The above models all have at least 200 horsepower (MR-2, which is incredibly light weight and also the only mid-engined car) and are either Rear-Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive (Dodge, Mitsubishi, and Subaru). They're 2-Door coupes, with a variety of engines. I know about this category because I'm looking at my future car from this category as well. I plan on spending no more than $8,000 as the absolute max. These models will all knock the stuffing out of an Integra or Eclipse (which are rated at "only" 200-210 horsepower and are Front-Wheel Drive, which isn't nearly as sporty or fun to drive).

Out of the above list, my personal favorites are the Porsche 944, Chevrolet Corvette, Lexus SC 400, Toyota MR-2, and Lincoln Mark VIII. The Chevrolet has 330 horsepower and is fiberglass-bodied for light weight. The Lincoln and Lexus are the sportiest luxury coupes you can buy, and have 290-300 horsepower V-8s. The Toyota only has 200 horsepower, but is the lightest car in the group, seats just two people, and has the best handling of all thanks to the light weight and a mid-engined configuration. The Porsche has a turbocharged 4-Cylinder, with 225-247 horsepower depending upon year and whether it's a Turbo or Turbo S, and the idea of owning a Porsche for under $10,000 is just cool.

One other thing to keep in mind, especially when modifying. The American cars (especially the Camaro, Mustang, and Firebird) are a lot easier to modify, easier to find parts for, and a lot cheaper to modify and repair. Also, they've got good old-fashioned performance straight from the factory. The top models (SS, SVT Cobra, and Trans Am) have over 300 horsepower. That, and they're rated higher in reliability than the Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru, all esteemed Japanese brands. Something about having more reliable engines than the three Japs. There's also lots of stories about Supras blowing engines when modifying. The Supras were meant to be left at factory spec. Modifying improperly causes the turbos and engine to fail (I've seen the ads in Autotrader many times when looking for one - body and interior excellent, low miles, all options, turbo bad - and they're insanely expensive to fix and modify properly)

I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more, please feel free to ask.

What would be a good car for a budget of $7K and how many miles should I expect it to have?

I am looking for opinions so tell me your preferred make model and how many miles you think is too many and how many is reasonable

Answer
First is first. Nothing over 110,000 miles unless there has been a tune up or some major work done on it.

For $7000, milage really depends on the year of the car and the type of vehiacle.
Cars from japan(including luxury, entry level, SUV) 30-150k
Cars from Germany/other European brands(Volvo, Saab, etc) 60-110k
Cars from American 40-80k

These include luxury cars, so meaning that it would have higher milage if it's a more expensive car and lower milage if it's more of a entry level car.

Cars from Toyota would be under 140k
Honda under 130k
Chevrolet under 100k
MB under 70k
BMW under 70k

I've seen some 2006 Honda civics that go for about $6000 with around 50,000 miles on craigslist. Also there are plenty of good condition BMW 3-series around me going for about $6000 that range from 1999-2003.

trip plans for Hawaii ...thanks?

angela

My husband and I along with our Son( barely 3 yrs old then) are flying in to Holonunu from DC and flying back after 15 days.
the trip was booked for middle dec that covers chritmas and new year.
What should we do there and how should we plan the 15 days. where else should we go, should we rent a car? Should I dont have a specific budget , meaning that I am open to spend on something thats really good, but I want to be frugal at the mean time .

Answer
Is this your first trip to Hawaii? 15 days is an excellent amount of time to see 2-3 islands. For first time visitors, I'd recommend Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island of Hawaii as the three best destination islands. Kauai is awesome, but it can get a little boring after 2-3 days of perfect beaches, lush rain forests, and stunning waterfalls and scenery.

On Maui, you'll probably want to stay at the multi-resort development at Kaanapali. The Sheraton Kaanapali at Black Rock is a great hotel. If you're rich and like luxury try the mega-resorts along the Gold Coast (Makena-Wailea). Maui has all the activities you could want from whale watching, golfing, horse back riding, hiking, perfect beaches, and water sports. There is a winery in upcountry Maui. The Haleakala Crater is spectacular in the morning (but your son may not be loving the cold dry air and high altitude).

Whale Watching. If you travel to Hawaii in December you have to put whale watching on your list of things to do. The whales ought to be viewable by boat, air, and often times by land from/between Oahu and Maui. The best whale watching boat tours obviously depend on the sea legs of your family members.

Do you prefer all-inclusive resorts or winging it? Waikiki on Oahu has its good points and bad. But you can decent budget accommodation deals there. If you want an inclusive resort experience try the Ihilani Resort & Spa about an hour away from Waikiki. Waikiki will be overrun by Japanese tourists around the time you visit. They tend to visit en masse in December-January and again in July-August.

On Oahu If you like American historical sites, you ought to visit Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial & Museum, and the USS Bowfish submarine. If you want even more history, you can also visit the Punchbowl National Cemetery up on Tantalus.

Surf ought to be up on the north shore of all Hawaiian islands in December, and Oahu's North Shore has some of the best surfing in the world. It's spectacular to see, but don't go in the water when the surf's up. It's not worth the risk. Swim along the calm south shore beaches instead.

One of the most memorable and spectacular sites to visit is on the Big Island. The intermittently active volcano of Kilauea is simply awesome. If you can afford it, there are helicopter tours and boat tours that can sort of come near the active lava flows if they're occurring. It's a hit or miss affair, but don't miss the opportunity if it arises. Stay at a resort on the Kona coast, and don't bother with the Hilo side (east) of the island. The distances are far and you don't want to waste your time driving for hours when you could be experiencing the gorgeous western side of the island.

Stay away from Molokai. The people there are xenophobic and crazy. However, if you and yours love deep sea fishing, the north shore of Molokai has some of the best fishing, and perhaps the most beautiful and stunning scenery in the entire State of Hawaii.
