POLL: Who agrees with me that race car driving is NOT a sport?

Yeah sure it takes skill and good reflexes but is it reeeaaalllyyyy a sport? When you think 'sport' you think of football and lacrosse and soccer and stuff like that. In those sports you actually have to work out and run and you burn a hell of a lot more calories then you do driving a car. And NASCAR is just stupid and generally bring to watch, even more boring than baseball. All you have to so is sit on your ass and turn a wheel. It's really not that great, PLUS it's using up oil and gas that the rest of us need for our cars that we DONT just drive in circles. It isn't green!

It is legal ***** B U T ***** she will not be able to write off the car except for the part of it's value that is advertising and NOT personal use.

If she parks it somewhere and never uses it as transportation, she could probably claim the entire value of the car. She will have to be ready to supply a full breakdown of the costs of the car and every use made of it to the IRS whenever they want to audit her taxes. They also may have rules specifically limiting the percentage of the cost or a flat amount that can be considered advertising use.

The IRS considers business use deductions of an item that is usually for personal use to be a big red flag to include the person in an audit.
A CPA warned me about that when I was out of town for 7 months to work on automated equipment that I designed. I considered writing off a thousand dollar video camera since I sometimes used one for analyzing issues with machines but she warned me that I would be inviting an audit and would have to be able to show logs to prove the percentage of video that I took for the work and that which I took for personal use. The use ended up being 100% for personal anyway.

This is similar to claiming a room in your house as an office. They cracked down on the people who tried to write off that percentage of their house as a business expense and wrote rules that made it clearer that you have to use it as your primary and necessary work site plus you can only write off only a part of it unless you use it exclusively as an office (fold out couch for guests for sleeping means it is not exclusively an office).
I have a friend that does daycare for children in her house. She is allowed to write off PART of the value of the house and expenses needed to maintain it as business expenses but must meet the guidelines that the IRS (US Internal Revenue Service) sets for how to calculate it.
Groceries are also an item that is needed for the operation of her business but in that case, the IRS rules state a specific amount per child per type of meal. She tends to feed them organic foods and looses money since the deduction is for typical foods. Since she cooks them from scratch, she probably gains a little since the IRS numbers would be based on some prepackaged foods. It would just be too difficult to determine a percentage of food expenses, so the IRS has a flat rate.
This is similar for using a car for business travel (where the travel is specifically required, not driving around town claiming advertising). The IRS says you may claim XX cents per mile, regardless if you are driving a Lamborghini or a clapped out Chevette.

Either Joe's answer is pure BS (as in he made it up or his friend made it up to feel superior) or his friend got really lucky not to be audited. His "friend" would have to prove the percentage of use that was required and exclusively for his business.

I had a friend that created a tour company - his sole occupation - and did write off trips to various places like the Great Wall of China as a business expense. I don't know the details of how much he could deduct for him and suspect that the expenses of his girlfriend traveling with him was not deductible. He also could prove the need for the trips since he then created tours to most of the places that he visited that were advertised to the public and actually took place.

how would police officers catch someone who has stolen a high end sports car?

i was just watching some police videos with good old Sheriff john bunnell, and the people running usually have crappy cars, but what would the police do if they have no air support, and they were chasing a lambo or ferrari or some exotic sports car?

Most of those high end sports cars also have automatic shutoffs via phone. Assuming they know the owner, they can call a code and the engine will shut off.

When learning how to drive should I learn manual or automatic?

I am 15 and about to start studying for my drivers permit. I have always dreamt about owning a sports car and would my consider myself a car enthusiast. I have spent countless hours watching youtube videos of cars, obsessing over car pictures and dealer websites, reading and watching tv shows like topgear bbc. I want to learn how to drive stick because it looks like fun, a great experience and because I would have to generalize that most sports cars are manual or it would just be a shame to buy them in automatic and not get as pleasurable as an experience. I have seen videos showing how to drive stick but I have never actually had an opportunity to do so.
A couple problems I have are:
1) nobody in my immediate family drives stick shift.
2) my folks think that buying a manual transmission car decreases the value
3) I have to admit that as much as I would love to drive stick, I am somewhat intimidated by how it looks driving with the clutch and the gear changes and just the overwhelming complications to get started.

So would it benefit for me to take my license test and learn with an automatic car, and then learn stick on the side or what?

I learned to drive on a manual back in the 1960s. Partly because they were cheaper in those days, they got better gas mileage, required less maintenance, and because my dad wanted my sister and me to learn to handle any kind of car. (Some cars in those days came only with manual transmissions!) I have always had manuals, except these days I do a lot of rush-hour stop-and-go driving and an automatic is better for that so my current car is an automatic.

These days, though, it's not even easy to find a car with a manual transmission unless it's one of those super-expensive toys they play around with on Top Gear (and even those often have automatic clutches, so you just pick a gear). These days I'm not sure you could even find a driving instructor who uses a manual! Automatics get the same fuel efficiency, they don't cost more, they have probably LESS maintenance because there's no clutch to wear out.

Back in the 90s I got into an argument with my GF. We were looking for a new car for her and she wanted a 4 on the floor (actually they're 5 on the floor now but nobody says that 'cos it doesn't rhyme!) We were going to a Chevy dealership to look at cars, and I bet her that most Corvettes were sold with automatic transmissions. They're more about status and image than sportiness, I thought. She thought most would have manuals because they're 'sports cars'. So we made a bet. I asked the salesman and he said maybe 90% were automatics, in fact if you wanted a manual you had to order it special. I would bet on today's Corvette you can't even get a manual!

And the funny thing is, EVERY motorcycle is manual! There are never more than one or two models of automatic motorcycles, and they don't sell well. Go figure! Yet motorscooters are all automatic!

You're not going to be getting that Porsche or Maserati or Aston Martin for your first car. 8^) If you learn to drive automatic, you get all that stuff out of the way, and if you got a manual later, you'd only need to learn how to work the shift and clutch. It looks complicated but it's really not that hard once you get a feel for the clutch.
