Moving to NYC soon, do you have any advice?

Kandy

I am a from Boulder Colorado, I am moving to NYC in mid feb. I am a 23 year old white girl moving to NYC for business. I got a job from a friend in the film industry. My pay is good but only ok for super expensive NYC. I have only been to NYC twice in my life and I loved it. Where is a good neighborhood have heard greenwich village is nice. And do you have any general advice. And how bad is the crime? Are there any areas in Manhattan I should avoid? Any General advice would be much appreciated

Answer
Greenwich Village use to be one of the places where it was for artist, but now it is more with high rental apartments, yet some tenement buildings still there with rents more pricey.

You may try looking at some places further north or the outer boroughs like Williamsburg, Parkslope in Brooklyn, Astoria and Sunnyside in Queens, East Village and Chelsea in Manhattan.

Rents usually start off for one bedrooms at $1,500.00 to $2,400.00 a month for a one bedroom and that depends on your budget.

If you are looking, use a suitable broker or real estate agency. Never use Craigslist.

EDIT:
When moving here, become familiar with our subway system, that is how we natives get around. Having a car is a luxury, but not recommended when you have to get to certain places.
MTA website can help you at http://www.mta.info

As far as crime is concern, we are the safest city with measures to combat crime. However we always recommend that you do not display any jewelery, electronic devices (cellphones and Ipads and Iphones), and travel with friends. Be weary of anyone that wants to talk to you asking for directions or want to talk to you on the side.

how much does an average teacher win in NYC?

Q. That's my question? Is there like an average wage for Teachers or it depends on your experience, education, etc.

Also I heard that if you don't win at least $125.000dollars you wont make a good living in NYC.

Answer
Salaries are not ' won '. They are earned. A teacher's salary is based on her educational attainment. The starting salary for a New York City teacher is about $48,000 per annum. Without becoming a supervisor , a teacher can make up to $100,000 per annum. In NYC, making that range of salary is okay if you live in the low to middle income areas. However, if you live in the upper echelon, it is almost impossible to live comfortably based on the cost of living I.e. luxury rental, car, garage rental, groceries and etc.

18 year old Moving To NYC?

Lou_Fresh

Hello, i am a recent High School Graduate From Miami,Florida. I graduated with a 3.1 GPA and am looking forward to attend Boroughs of Manhattan Community College for two years, then on too Brooklyn College and hopefully grad school for Journalism. My parents split with a bitter divorce, so i have little income from my mother, I have 2 Years Job Experience At Starbucks. And i have $20,000 in savings. My tuition will be payed with other money. I am wondering if i can survive in the city, with a 1 Bedroom apartment and minimal luxuries. The apartment can be in close proximity of Manhattan but Brooklyn,Queens, etc. is fine. Anyone can spot me the cost of living (apartments) cost of food etc. Also as an extra note, i will not have a car, but use public transportation.
Thanks
Will CHOOSE BEST ANSWER!

Answer
Oh wow.. i just thought about doing the same thing a couple months ago.. well I still am except I am moving to San Francisco instead of NYC. I am a high school senior and am moving out of Florida ASAP when I graduate.. I don't want to go to college here and I am going to be paying for college myself. Ive actually lived in NYC though and can tell you about this plan of yours.

First of all.. you WILL need roommates. You can live in a good apartment with 3 other people in a nice neighborhood in brooklyn or queens for about 650-700 including utilities (your share) a month. You wont be able to live in Manhattan... MAYBE, and I mean MAYBE you could afford a roommate situation in Harlem or Washington Heights for the same price but they wont be as good of quality as in Queens or BK. But if you want to go to Brooklyn College you must live in BK because the commute from anywhere else would be too much. Plus, Washington heights is somewhat far away from midtown and downtown but it is close to City College, if you want to go there (cheap 4 year school).

Monthly MTA card is 76, its great.. works for subways and buses and has unlimited uses for the month. Food will be maybe in the 200 range if you are single and eat normally. Food in NYC is normally priced in the boroughs, but is outrageous in manhattan.. actually, everything is overpriced in manhattan. You will also need to budget for new clothes because the weather in NYC is in two extremes, very hot in the summer (like miami, and yes, I believe there is humidity), and very cold in the winter. I would budget 50 a month for clothes for at least the first year. You will also need to budget for savings to use on health related things.. like saving 50 bucks a month to use on your yearly dentist visit or your yearly eye exam. You also will need to budget in at least 100 for other expenses and money you spend on extra stuff. You need to be realistic.. you may say you wont spend any extra cash but you always will. Going to McDonalds, vending machines, buying a magazine, or anything like that is considered extra. Also budget in 80 bucks a year for a PO box.

I believe all-in-all you will need to be making at least 500 a month along with your rent in order to survive minimally, so about 1200 a month after taxes.

A couple tips:

Dont live in new jersey. Establish a residence in NYC and keep your rental receipts and pay stubs. If you live in NY for a year you can pay instate tuition at colleges there.

Support yourself and take minimum amounts of $$ from your mom. If you can prove you pay all your own expenses you qualify for instate tuition and possibly financial aid.

Stay away from some of the east neighborhoods in BK. East New York, Brownsville, Flatbush, and Bed-Stuy are cheap to live in but are ghettoes! Queens and Manhattan are safe, Bronx is so-so, but BK has some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the whole city.

Be careful in what ethnic enclave you live. Some neighborhoods are so ethnic that every sign except the street signs are in Chinese/Korean/Greek/Spanish. You might be familiar with this though, coming from Miami.

Dont blow your savings if you are trying to go to school.. you have enough saved up for tuition at a college in NYC. Work as little as you need to in order to pay the bills. No more than 25-30 hours a week. It would be foolish to try to live on your own (without roommates) just because you have so much saved up.

Try finding a job as server or busser and gain experience in the serving industry. It is VERY lucrative in manhattan. 2 years experience can land you a good job at a restaurant where you can make good tips.

BTW.. I've heard that Brooklyn College (gorgeous campus btw), while somewhat easy to get into, has a hard curriculum so make sure you can balance work and school efficiently.

Foreign/sports/Luxury auto rentals in upstate NY?

Josh

Anyone know where I can rent a luxury/sports/ or foreign auto in the Albany NY/Saratoga NY area for a wedding this upcoming september? I have contacted the local rental car agencies and the best I can do through them is a mustang convertible.

Answer
I've lived in the area for years, and I can tell you your choices are limited. Hertz has the best selection, but the best you'll do is a Volvo S60 or maybe a Dodge Charger. If you really want to go whole hog, Gotham Dream Cars in NYC will deliver things like Ferraris, Porsches and Aston Martins to Albany for you, but the 911 Turbo is their cheapest, at $795/day + a $65 "membership fee", although they do give 10% off for two months' advance booking, and they might deliver free to Albany.

NYC has a number of those outfits...good luck! If there's a particular vehicle for which you're looking, try posting your request on a club bulletin board. Many people have success doing that.

Could I afford to live comfortably in New York City with this occupation and income?

PER92

I am hoping to become an Urban Planner. According to PayScale.com, the average salary for those with 20 years of experience is US$97,250. How far out from New York City would I have to be to live comfortably on that income? Could I live comfortably in Manhattan, or Brooklyn or Queens?

Also, is it common for people to start out living maybe an hour away from NYC somewhere in the metropolitan area and then as their income rises move closer in over time?

Answer
To Gertrud - you've clearly never been to Brooklyn or Queens, and maybe not to Manhattan. He could live comfortably in ALL of these boroughs on that salary - very easily. Particularly easily in Brooklyn and Queens.

The nicest, more expensive areas of Brooklyn are Williamsburg, Greenpoint, the Heights and Park Slope - the average rental prices for a one bedroom in these areas are $1800 - $2200. On $97K a year, you could VERY comfortably afford this - you could probably comfortably afford a two bedroom on that salary, as long as you don't have a drug problem or gambling addiction that you're not telling us.

In Queens, the nicest areas, in my opinion (however, my opinion may be less informed than Brooklyn, since I didn't grow up in Queens and never lived there, only visit frequently) are the areas of Bayside, Forest Hills, and maybe Astoria (Astoria mostly nice, though, because it's so close to Manhattan). In Forest Hills, I have friends who have a one bedroom for $1500 - others who have two bedrooms (and share the apartment) for $2200. In Astoria, it may be a little more, but you get the picture - it's really cheap to live in Brooklyn and Queens.

Living in Brooklyn now, in Sheepshead Bay with a roommate, my share of rent is $600. I'm a grad student, with only a part time job, and I live well - I'm able to splurge, go shopping, have a gym membership, keep a car and insure it, have all those luxuries. It's a nice area, full of Russians and Hasidic Jews, it's unfortunately a hike to Manhattan (though I'm not complaining) - you can find a large, well lit one bedroom here for $1200. Great deals - but it's about 40 minutes away from Manhattan. If the commute doesn't bother you, and you're looking to save as much money as possible on rent, look into Bay Ridge, Brighton Beach, Bensonhurst, Midwood and Sheepshead Bay - great, safe, family friendly areas with half of the rent that you would pay in Brooklyn North.

You could even live in Manhattan on that - the average rental price for a one bedroom in downtown Manhattan is $3000. That's $36000 a year - leaving you $60K a year (before taxes) to play with, save, pay for bills, etc. Don't listen to these people who have clearly never lived in the city, or are under the impression that it's more expensive and unlivable than it actually is. Come and visit for a few days and get the idea yourself. You'll be fine.

As for your last question - actually, most of the people I know start out in the city, and then move farther out as their incomes increase and they can afford to buy houses. I'm only 23, so there aren't a LOT of people in my age group doing this, but my friends' parents or older siblings tend to do this - after graduating, working a few years, and getting a good savings account set up, they move to Westchester, Connecticut or Jersey.
