I am a teenager, 17 yrs. I want to buy a car but do not know the type that i should buy. I want a car with upgraded technology, comfort and less fuel consumption. I need help with a car that will serve my specification. Your suggestion is highly appreciated.

Answer
I would recommend the new Buick Regal, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, & Subaru Legacy as far as 2WD cars go, although the Focus is available in either AWD or 4WD, not sure which though.

As for AWD I like the new Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Edge, Buick LaCrosse, Lincoln MKZ, Mazda6, almost all Subaru's, Hyundai Sonata.

Almost all of the cars mentioned get pretty decent mileage, and have optional luxuries. I'm not whether you're looking for AWD, 4WD, 2WD, or RWD, but that should definitely be a factor when choosing your car. Also, you may want to decide on a crossover type car, SUV, sedan, or coupe. You didn't mention your budget so I tried to list a variation of brands. Personally, you should check out the websites of different brands to see what all they have on the market.

www.chevrolet.com
www.buick.com
www.nissanusa.com
www.automobiles.honda.com
www.acura.com
www.subaru.com
www.ford.com
www.lincoln.com
www.hyundaiusa.com
www.mazdausa.com
www.mitsubishicars.com
www.vw.com

Almost all of them have the option for you to compare their model to other brands if you just select the car you're interested and look for the button, it should say something along the lines of compare to other models.

Also, if you are interested in used instead of a new car, I would suggest www.autotrader.com or going to the car's brand website and clicking on the certified used button, sometimes under the button that lists their vehicles or at the bottom of the page. If you can't find it just google... ex. lincoln certified used, it should take you to the website for it. These cars go through a nearly 200 point inspection and are a much better/safer buy than just used car. They often come with warranties unlike non certified used cars.

What do you think of the 2003 jeep grand Cherokee?

It has 75000 miles on it and they want 8500 for it. Is this a good car for a 23 yr old male?

Answer
It is rugged and dependable, but there are so many electronics and luxury features, that is it hard to keep them all working, and expensive to fix.
Mine is older, and I only get about 12 mpg.
But it has good power and tows well.
The rear axles are weak in that there is no inner race to the bearings, so eventually the bearings saw a groove in the axles and they have to be replaces, at $150 each.
But that happens around 240,000 miles, so not an immediate concern.
The question is whether you really want to spend the money on gas for a 4WD?

I can't tell you about the price because it is low miles and it depends on how it looks, how much you want 4WD, etc. But compare it with others on craigslist.
Traditionally you get over 25% off by buying from an individual over a dealer.

This will be second car. Have not had an SUV before. Like those brands because engine is easy to repair and long lasting. Thinking of getting a car between 4-8 years old. What models are good? Looking for cheaper and reliable car that will last a long time. Any other advice on what to look for in a car would be great. Any other really good 4X4 but not may be by company above?

Answer
Any Subaru will be great in the snow. I currently have a 2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R Limited, and took it out in a bit of snow this weekend (a little bit of Nemo!), and it did great! Not to mention that it will last FOREVER. Subarus are known for being very reliable vehicles. My in-laws had one for about 20 years, and when they got rid of it, it still ran, but the frame and all that kind of stuff was falling apart. The engine would have fallen out before it would stop running. A Subaru might be a little more expensive than other vehicles that are comparable, but it is definitely worth it. Impreza is their compact (also comes as WRX and WRX STI if you drive manual and are interested in a turbo)... and Legacy/Outback are midsize (Legacy is a sedan, Outback is a wagon and I believe it has a slightly higher suspension)... I think the "Outback" name might get a little confusing, though, because they used it on a few different vehicles in the time period you may be looking at (at one time it was applied to the Impreza and Legacy, also). Forester is their smaller SUV, and the Tribeca is their larger SUV. Bajas are very hard to find and since you are looking for something 'cheaper' I wouldn't recommend a Baja - they command a bit of a premium since they are still in demand and there aren't many on the market. Anyway, point being, if you go with a Subaru, you can't go wrong. (Just make sure that it is actually AWD - it wasn't always standard, but I don't recall what year that started.)

I had a 2010 Honda Crosstour that was pretty great in the snow, too. It was the V6 4WD version, none of that 2WD 4 cylinder crap they make now. I don't know how cheap a used 2010 would be, though, and if you're looking used, that's probably the year you would have to look for. 2010 was the first year they made them, but don't worry about buying the first year! It's all tried and true technology that Honda had used in other vehicles before. It's a very solid vehicle, even with a bit of a luxury feel. It made me feel like a boss. (The reason that I no longer have it is because it was in an accident. I can tell you from that, it is a VERY safe vehicle!)

Is a CLK Coupe a good car for a new driver?

GoldmanSac

I want to get a Mercedes CLK Coupe for his first car

I know many of you may say that you should not give a kid such a car or he should buy his own, but I think that getting into Harvard and having a 4.3 GPA is good enough to get a car like this.

But is there any other luxury cars which are better for around the same price. And is a coupe a good choice for a kid or should i go for an SUV

Answer
I think its best to let him choose which ever car he likes most... after all, he's the one that will be driving it. If this car is the one he likes, then its really nice. Honestly, for around that price... I like the new Porsche Cayman... the Cayenne is also nice... and its an SUV. Another nice option would we a BMW 3 series... or better yet, the new 2008 M3. Lastly, the Audi TT is also nice, and you can get the quattro (4WD) and that might help with the weather.
